TL;DR: Experimental techniques that are used commonly to determine SAR distributions along with the SAR limitations and unresolved problems are described.
Abstract: Radio frequency (RF) dosimetry is the quantification of the magnitude and distribution of absorbed electromagnetic energy within biological objects that are exposed to RF fields. At RF, the dosimetric quantity, which is called the specific absorption rate (SAR), is defined as the rate at which energy is absorbed per unit mass. The SAR is determined not only by the incident electromagnetic waves but also by the electrical and geometric characteristics of the irradiated subject and nearby objects. It is related to the internal electric field strength (E) as well as to the electric conductivity and the density of tissues; therefore, it is a suitable dosimetric parameter, even when a mechanism is determined to be "athermal." SAR distributions are usually determined from measurements in human models, in animal tissues, or from calculations. This tutorial describes experimental techniques that are used commonly to determine SAR distributions along with the SAR limitations and unresolved problems. The methods discussed to obtain point, planar, or whole-body averaged SARs include the use of small E-field probes or measurement of initial rate of temperature rise in an irradiated object.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electromigration of eutectic SnPb solder interconnects between a Si chip and a FR4 substrate was studied at 120°C for up to 324 h with current stressing of 104 amp/cm2.
Abstract: The electromigration of eutectic SnPb solder interconnects between a Si chip and a FR4 substrate was studied at 120 °C for up to 324 h with current stressing of 104 amp/cm2. Hillocks were observed at the anode and voids at the cathode. The dominant diffusing species was found to be Pb, confirmed by its accumulation at the anode. Diffusion markers were used to measure the electromigration flux and calculate the effective charge of atomic diffusion in the solder. Extensive microstructural evolution was also observed in the two-phase solder alloy that occurred by a ripening process.

09 May 2002TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-band radio communication device with an antenna system that includes an antenna element and a parasitic element located in proximity to the antenna element is described, where a tuning circuit is coupled to the parasitic element.
Abstract: A multi-band radio communication device with an antenna system that includes an antenna element and a parasitic element located in proximity to the antenna element. A tuning circuit is coupled to the parasitic element. The tuning circuit is variable to adjust the parasitic load on the antenna element to provide variable operating frequencies and bandwidths for the communication device.

26 Sep 2000TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for assigning location estimates from a first transceiver of a plurality of wireless transceivers to a second transceiver is disclosed, which makes use of a low power short-range auxiliary communication link incorporated within networked devices to interact with nearby devices for obtaining location estimates of the current location of a device.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assigning location estimates from a first transceiver of a plurality of wireless transceivers to a second transceiver is disclosed. The present invention makes use of a low power short-range auxiliary communication link incorporated within networked devices to interact with nearby devices for obtaining location estimates of the current location of a device. Confidence levels are then assigned to the information obtained from the interactions with the nearby devices, and a determination of whether to update the location estimate is made.

30 Apr 2001TL;DR: In this article, a technique for intra-piconet location determination and tomography is described, which uses RSSI values in conjunction with transmitted power levels to determine the relative location of each device within a small network employing frequency hopped spread spectrum transmission.
Abstract: A technique for intra-piconet location determination and tomography is described. This technique uses received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values in conjunction with transmitted power levels to determine the relative location of each device within a small network employing frequency hopped spread spectrum transmission. In addition to the location determination properties of the invention, the geometry of the devices in the network, as well as the path loss information between pairs of devices, may be used to infer the location of absorbers and reflectors within the piconet. This absorption and reflection information may be used in creating the piconet tomography. The approach described in this specification may be applied in conjunction with the Bluetooth wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) specification to determine device locations, mitigate the effects of multi-path, and perform indoor location and security functions, and other application functions requiring cost-effective location determination.
