Abstract: Multibiometric systems utilize the evidence presented by multiple biometric sources (e.g., face and fingerprint, multiple fingers of a user, multiple matchers, etc.) in order to determine or verify the identity of an individual. Information from multiple sources can be consolidated in several distinct levels, including the feature extraction level, match score level and decision level. While fusion at the match score and decision levels have been extensively studied in the literature, fusion at the feature level is a relatively understudied problem. In this paper we discuss fusion at the feature level in 3 different scenarios: (i) fusion of PCA and LDA coefficients of face; (ii) fusion of LDA coefficients corresponding to the R,G,B channels of a face image; (iii) fusion of face and hand modalities. Preliminary results are encouraging and help in highlighting the pros and cons of performing fusion at this level. The primary motivation of this work is to demonstrate the viability of such a fusion and to underscore the importance of pursuing further research in this direction.

Abstract: In a contactless charging system charging energy is transferred across an inductive coupler to charge a battery ( 21 ) of a portable device, such as a two-way radio, cellular phone, paging device, or wireless communicator. The inductive coupler also provides a way for communicating at least one signal, such as to improve the charging process and the transfer of charging energy. Charging efficiency is improved by voltage regulation using feedback through the inductive coupler, or via a wireless RF link, and a controller ( 11 ) in-circuit with the primary side ( 12 ) of the inductive coupler. The controller ( 11 ) may communicate information signals via inductive coupling, or via a wireless RF link, for communicating with other devices such as smart cards and microphones or for control or data transfer.

Abstract: A method of automatically placing transistors of a folded transistor circuit for synthesizing rows of transistors in a semiconductor layout (172). First, an initial placement of transistors is generated (802). Next, a candidate move of transistors is selected (804). Then the change in cost of the placement resulting from applying the candidate move is evaluated (806). A decision is made to accept the candidate move based on the evaluation of its cost (808). If accepted, the move is performed (810) and the cost of the placement is updated (812). Finally, a decision to terminate the process is made (814).

Abstract: The field emission of individual multiwall carbon nanotubes grown by chemical vapor deposition was measured in a scanning electron microscope. By using a sharp anode, we were able to select one nanotube for measurements in carefully controlled conditions. Single nanotubes follow the Fowler-Nordheim law, and the dependence of the field enhancement with interelectrode distance and nanotube radius is in good agreement with the recent model of Edgcombe and Valdr\'e. Our results suggest that only nanotubes with the highest field enhancement factors, i.e., at least $8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}$ higher than those of the average nanotube population, contribute to the emitted current in usual large area measurements.

Abstract: A system and method of evaluating the radio coverage of a geographic area serviced by a digital cellular radiotelephone communication system is described which comprises a plurality of base stations each having a transmitter and a receiver and a plurality of mobile units having co-located transmitters and receivers for transmitting and receiving communication message signals between the base stations and a mobile unit. During operation, the position of at least one of the mobile units operating within the geographic area is located when a call is received by a base station. The base station monitors the signal quality of the call and collects information relevant to the actual performance of the communication system. The mobile unit location and corresponding signal quality data are passed from the base station to a central operation and maintenance unit which collects the data, performs all necessary analytic and arithmetic computations, and provides a user-friendly representation of the characteristics of the radio coverage. With this representation of the radio coverage characteristics, the system operator can quickly and efficiently diagnose coverage deficiencies and take the necessary corrective action. By continuously monitoring subscriber calls and updating the pictographic representations, the system operator can actually observe the effect of the adopted modifications in a pseudo real-time fashion.
