14 Jun 1982TL;DR: In this paper, a computer driven, informational display system is disclosed which visually displays selected information in real time in retail establishments which utilize the standard Universal Product Code for the items of merchandise for sale.
Abstract: A computer driven, informational display system is disclosed which visually displays selected information in real time. The arrangement is particularly adapted for displaying pricing and other associated information in retail establishments which utilize the standard Universal Product Code for the items of merchandise for sale. The particular bar code forms a unique address for respective remote display modules at selected locations throughout the store. A source of computer-based information is applied to all of the remote display units in parallel. When a particular display module detects its unique address, the information to be displayed, which follows the addressed code, is processed and used to control the operation of an LCD display.

25 Jul 1995TL;DR: In this paper, a block coding scheme for the reduction of the peak to mean envelope power ratio of multicarrier transmission schemes is described and the principle of the scheme is illustrated with the specific example of a four carrier signal.
Abstract: A block coding scheme for the reduction of the peak to mean envelope power ratio of multicarrier transmission schemes is described. The principle of the scheme is illustrated with the specific example of a four carrier signal. The potential of the technique is investigated and it is shown that the application of a 1/2 rate code could typically result in a peak to mean envelope power ratio of around 3 dB. The development of the technique in terms of the selection of suitable sets of code words based on Shapiro-Rudin sequences, Golay complementary sequences and other larger sets of code words is investigated. However, it is shown that none of these code sets are ideal.

TL;DR: In this article, the energy absorption mechanism in the close near field of dipole antennas is studied by numerical simulations and all computations are performed and validated applying the three-dimensional multiple multipole software package.
Abstract: The energy absorption mechanism in the close near field of dipole antennas is studied by numerical simulations. All computations are performed and validated applying the three-dimensional multiple multipole software package. The numerical model of the plane phantom is additionally checked by accurate as possible experimental measurements. For the plane phantom, the interaction mechanism can be described well by H-field induced surface currents. The spatial peak specific absorption rate can be approximated within 3 dB by a formula given here based on the incident H-field or antenna current and on the conductivity and permittivity of the tissue. These findings can be generalized to heterogeneous tissues and larger biological bodies of arbitrary shape for frequencies above 300 MHz. The specific absorption rate is mainly proportional to the square of the incident H-field, which implies that in the close near field, the spatial peak specific absorption rate is related to the antenna current and not to the input power. >

25 Sep 2000TL;DR: In this paper, a vehicle information system (20) is proposed that allows a vehicle user to store waypoints descriptive of different locations encountered during travel, each waypoint includes the geographic position of its corresponding location, the time, and may include appended information such as a voice message or a picture.
Abstract: A system (10) for storing and using information associated with geographic locations of interest to a mobile user comprises a mobile apparatus (100) and a remote apparatus (200). The mobile apparatus accepts and transmits information associated with a mobile user's geographic position. The remote apparatus (200) receives the transmitted information, stores the information along with data indicative of the position and time as a waypoint, and allows the user to retrieve and manipulate waypoints. The system is preferably realized as a vehicle information system (20) that allows a vehicle user to store waypoints descriptive of different locations encountered during travel. Each waypoint includes the geographic position of its corresponding location, the time, and may include appended information such as a voice message or a picture. The waypoints are stored in a remote server accessible from both the vehicle and an auxiliary apparatus such as a standard telephone (310) or a personal computer (330). After retrieving a stored waypoint, the user has a number of options, such as receiving navigation instructions, modifying the information associated with the waypoint, and sharing the waypoint with a third party. A method (600) efficiently implements the aforementioned functions and other convenient features.
