TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for messaging within a mobile virtual and augmented reality system is provided, where a user can create "virtual graffiti" that will be left for a particular device to view as part of an augmented reality scene.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for messaging within a mobile virtual and augmented reality system is provided herein. During operation a user can create 'virtual graffiti' that will be left for a particular device to view as part of an augmented reality scene. The virtual graffiti will be assigned to a particular physical location or a part of an object that can be mobile. The virtual graffiti is then uploaded to a network server, along with the location and individuals who are able to view the graffiti as part of an augmented reality scene. When a device that is allowed to view the graffiti is near the location, the graffiti will be downloaded to the device and displayed as part of an augmented reality scene.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that robust codes exist whenever the source and channel bandwidths are equal and a matched tandem code whose channel encoder's output is partially/fully matched to its input is proposed and the existence of an asymptotically optimal matched tandemcode is shown.
Abstract: We consider the problem of transmitting a band-limited Gaussian source on an additive band-limited Gaussian noise channel. The well-known "threshold effect" dictates that the more powerful a code is, the more sensitive it is to the exact knowledge of the channel noise. A code is said to be robust if it is asymptotically optimal for a wide range of channel noise. Thus, robust codes have a "graceful degradation" characteristic and are free of the threshold effect. It is demonstrated that robust codes exist whenever the source and channel bandwidths are equal. In the unequal-bandwidth case, a collection of nearly robust joint source-channel codes is constructed using a hybrid digital-analog (HDA) coding technique. For designing nearly robust codes, a matched tandem code whose channel encoder's output is partially/fully matched to its input is proposed and the existence of an asymptotically optimal matched tandem code is shown. The nearly robust codes achieve the Shannon limit (theoretically optimum distortion) and have a less severe threshold effect. Finally, for the case of two different noise conditions, the distortion regions of these codes are determined.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the status of flat panel displays based on the Spindt microtip emitter, focusing on the scalability of the spindt process to large substrates, phosphor selection, high voltage stability, and display lifetime.
Abstract: The goal of making attractive flat panel displays (FPDs) based on arrays of cold cathodes has now become a reality. Pixtech and Futaba have begun commercial production of low voltage, monochrome field emission displays (FEDs). Moreover, public response to the high voltage, full color, VGA FED prototypes shown by Candescent and Motorola at various technical meetings and exhibits has been extremely positive and encouraging. Yet, the future of the FED industry is uncertain. The tremendous improvements in visual quality and reduction in manufacturing cost of liquid crystal displays, as well as the formidable progress made in other FPD technologies has raised the standard for FEDs. In this article, we first review the status of FEDs based on the Spindt microtip emitter. We focus on the scalability of the Spindt process to large substrates, phosphor selection, high voltage stability, and display lifetime. Second, we discuss in detail the recent advances made in alternate cold cathode technology, including carbon nanotubes and composite materials, and their potential advantages for FPD. This new technology offers a tremendous opportunity to lower capital investment, to cut manufacturing costs and to challenge the existing flat panel industry.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cellular telephone (10) incorporates the electronics for implementing both cellular telephone function (46) and a smartcard function (45), which allows the electronics to be protected from damage by the housing associated with the cellular telephone and also decreases the likelihood that the smartcard will be lost or stolen.
Abstract: A cellular telephone (10) incorporates the electronics for implementing both a cellular telephone function (46) and a smartcard function (45). This allows the electronics to be protected from damage by the housing associated with the cellular telephone and also decreases the likelihood that the smartcard will be lost or stolen. The cellular telephone 10 also includes an RF interface (40) for wireless communication between the smartcard and an external reader. Further, by making use of the cellular telephone function, information associated with the smartcard function may be updated or modified via existing cellular telephone infrastructure.

TL;DR: For directed graphs in which each vertex has a nonnegative weight, it is shown that the time complexity of Dijkstra's algorithm, implemented with a binary heap, is O(|E|+ |V|log|V|).
Abstract: Let G(V, E) be a directed graph in which each vertex has a nonnegative weight. The cost of a path between two vertices in G is the sum of the weights of the vertices on that path. We show that, for such graphs, the time complexity of Dijkstra's algorithm (E.W. Dijkstra, 1959), implemented with a binary heap, is O(|E|+|V|log|V|).
