TL;DR: In Uganda cancer of prostate has been quoted by DODGE; OWOR and TEMPLETON (1973) as forming 3.5% of all male malignancies, which is even higher if only adult males are considered.
Abstract: Carcinoma of the prostate is oneof the commonest adult male tumours, whose incidence is estimated at 10-20% (MELLINGER LETAL. 1967). Its hormone-dependency is well proved, experimentally and clinically, yet little progress has been made in general knowledge about this tumour in the last few decades (FRANKS, 1973). Although the tumour can be found in man aged less than 40 years, it affects usually older ages, between 50 and 70. This increased incidence with age can be attributed either to epithelial modifications due to normal changes during andropause or to longer exposure to potential carcinogens (DOLL et al., 1970). In this context genetic and environmental elements can act as initiating factors. It has been reported that the disease is very rare among the Indo-Chinese and Mongoloid races (DuiIlHAM and BAILAR, I!J66). WVNDER (1971) and FRANKS (1973) have reported a very high morbidity rate in Black Americans. As the life expectancy of Africans increases, prostatic cancer will assume greater importance and relative significance as a cause of morbidity and mortality. In Uganda cancer of prostate has been quoted by DODGE; OWOR and TEMPLETON (1973) as forming 3.5% of all male malignancies. This figure is even higher if only adult males are considered. In an attempt to find out the real incidence of this tumour we have analysed the data from the Kampala Cancer Registry and the Returns
