TL;DR: This paper considers “smoothness” constraints as well as low-rank approximations and proposes an efficient algorithm for performing tensor completion that is particularly powerful regarding visual data.
Abstract: In recent years, low-rank based tensor completion, which is a higher order extension of matrix completion, has received considerable attention. However, the low-rank assumption is not sufficient for the recovery of visual data, such as color and 3D images, when the ratio of missing data is extremely high. In this paper, we consider “smoothness” constraints as well as low-rank approximations and propose an efficient algorithm for performing tensor completion that is particularly powerful regarding visual data. The proposed method admits significant advantages, owing to the integration of smooth PARAFAC decomposition for incomplete tensors and the efficient selection of models in order to minimize the tensor rank. Thus, our proposed method is termed as “smooth PARAFAC tensor completion (SPC).” In order to impose the smoothness constraints, we employ two strategies, total variation (SPC-TV) and quadratic variation (SPC-QV), and invoke the corresponding algorithms for model learning. Extensive experimental evaluations on both synthetic and real-world visual data illustrate the significant improvements of our method, in terms of both prediction performance and efficiency, compared with many state-of-the-art tensor completion methods.

TL;DR: In this article, new point estimates for probability moments are proposed, in which increasing the number of estimating points is easier because the estimating points are independent of the random variable in its original space.
Abstract: There are many areas of structural safety and structural dynamics in which it is often desirable to compute the first few statistical moments of a function of random variables. The usual approximation is by the Taylor expansion method. This approach requires the computation of derivatives. In order to avoid the computation of derivatives, point estimates for probability moments have been proposed. However, the accuracy is quite low, and sometimes, the estimating points may be outside the region in which the random variable is defined. In the present paper, new point estimates for probability moments are proposed, in which increasing the number of estimating points is easier because the estimating points are independent of the random variable in its original space and the use of high-order moments of the random variables is not required. By using this approximation, the practicability and accuracy of point estimates can be much improved.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of rare-earth elements, La, Sm, Dy, Ho and Er, on the microstructure in BaTiO3(BT)-MgO-rare-earth oxide based system was studied.
Abstract: The effect of rare-earth elements, La, Sm, Dy, Ho and Er, on the microstructure in BaTiO3(BT)–MgO–rare-earth oxide based system was studied. Larger amount of MgO was required to suppress the grain growth for the larger ionic radius rare-earth ion (La, Sm)-doped samples than for the smaller ion (Dy, Ho, Er)-doped samples. Also, substitution modes of rare-earth elements and Mg in BT lattice were investigated. The solubility of rare-earth ions in BT lattice and the substitution ratio of rare-earth ions into Ba-site decreased as ionic radius decreases. This suggests that the formation of core-shell structures in BT–MgO–rare-earth oxide based system is dependent on the substitution ratio of rare-earth ions into Ba-site.

TL;DR: A historical perspective is provided of the development of so-called “shelf-stable electrophilic trifluoromethylating reagents”, although this field is in constant development.
Abstract: Since the discovery by Yagupolskii and co-workers that S-trifluoromethyl diarylsulfonium salts are effective for the trifluoromethylation of thiophenolates, the design and synthesis of electrophilic trifluoromethylating reagents have been extensively researched in both academia and industry, due to the significant unique features that trifluoromethylated compounds have in pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, and functional materials. Several effective reagents have been developed by the groups of Yagupolskii, Umemoto, Shreeve, Adachi, Magnier, Togni and Shibata. Due to the high stability and reactivity of these reagents, a series of Umemoto reagents, Togni reagent and Shibata reagent are now commercially available. In this review, we wish to briefly provide a historical perspective of the development of so-called "shelf-stable electrophilic trifluoromethylating reagents", although this field is in constant development.
