TL;DR: In the intraventricular fluid of the patients administered with L-DOPA, the level of dopamine metabolites were higher than control, suggesting enhanced turnover of dopamine in the brain, and the levels of monoamines increased in general, whereas the monoamine metabolites by catechol-O-methyltransferase were reduced compared with those in the patients treated with L -DOPA alone.

TL;DR: The structural color was maintained even after polymerization of the swelling monomer and cross-linker, suggesting the colloidal crystalline order was successfully fixed and embedded in the matrix of poly(ethyl acrylate) elastomer.
Abstract: Colloidal crystal assembly film was prepared by using monodispersed colloidal particles of cross-linked random copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization. The colloidal crystal film exhibited structural color when swollen with ethyl acrylate monomer. The structural color was maintained even after polymerization of the swelling monomer and cross-linker, suggesting the colloidal crystalline order was successfully fixed and embedded in the matrix of poly(ethyl acrylate) elastomer. Stretching deformation of the structural colored elastomer induced a sensitive change to shorter wavelength color. Peak wavelength of the UV-vis absorption spectrum of the stretched elastomer revealed an excellent proportional relationship with film thickness. In the swollen colloidal crystal film, ethyl acrylate was absorbed in the colloidal particle; therefore, poly(ethyl acrylate) chain should be penetrating into the colloidal particle after the polymerization of the matrix elastomer. This interpenetrated polymer network structure was considered to be effective for the rubber-like elasticity and sensitive strain-responsive color-changing phenomena of the structural colored elastomer.

TL;DR: A subgroup of meningiomas is characterized by aberrant hypermethylation of the subset of genes in the early stage of tumorigenesis, and the findings highlight the possibility of speculating potential malignancy of mena by assessing methylation status.
Abstract: Meningiomas are among the most common intracranial tumors and are mostly curable by surgical resection. However, some populations of meningiomas with benign histological profiles show malignant behavior. The reasons for this inconsistency are yet to be ascertained, and novel diagnostic criteria other than the histological one are urgently needed. The aim of the present study is to subclassify meningiomas from the viewpoint of gene methylation and to determine the subgroup with malignant characteristics. Thirty meningiomas were analyzed using microarrays for 6157 genes and were classified into three clusters on the basis of their methylation status; these were found to be independent of the histological grading. One of the clusters showed a high frequency of recurrence, with a marked accumulation of methylation in a subset of genes. We hypothesized that the aggressive meningiomas universally share characteristic methylation in certain genes; therefore, we chose the genes that strongly contributed to cluster formation. The quantified methylation values of five chosen genes (HOXA6, HOXA9, PENK, UPK3A and IGF2BP1) agreed well with microarray findings, and a scoring system consisting of the five genes significantly correlated with a high frequency of recurrence in an additional validation set of 32 patients. Of particular note is that three cases with malignant transformation already showed hypermethylation at histologically benign stage. In conclusion, a subgroup of meningiomas is characterized by aberrant hypermethylation of the subset of genes in the early stage of tumorigenesis, and our findings highlight the possibility of speculating potential malignancy of meningiomas by assessing methylation status.

TL;DR: The actual adsorption of group 3 metal ions was significantly enhanced beyond that expected from this correlation because of the formation of (-L)(3)H(3)M, which differs from that in the complexation of iminodiacetate in aqueous solutions.
Abstract: The adsorption equilibria of seven trivalent metal ions (M3+: Sc3+, Y3+, La3+, Fe3+, Al3+, Ga3+, and In3+) on chelating resins containing iminodiacetic acid groups (-LH2) were studied. Adsorption curves, measured under the conditions of metal ions in excess against chelating groups, directly indicated the metal-to-ligand ratio of the complexes formed in the resin phase. Iron and group 13 metal ions were adsorbed as (-L)2HM, while group 3 metal ions were adsorbed as (-L)3H3M and (-L)2HM. The adsorption constants for (-L)2HM found for all the metal ions were well correlated with the formation constants of iminodiacetate complexes in aqueous solutions. The actual adsorption of group 3 metal ions was significantly enhanced beyond that expected from this correlation because of the formation of (-L)3H3M. This is why the selectivity in the adsorption of trivalent metal ions differs from that in the complexation of iminodiacetate in aqueous solutions. The effects of anions and the number of iminodiacetic acid gr...
