TL;DR: The expression of most cycling genes peaked around the time of transition from subjective day to night, suggesting that the main role of the circadian clock in Synechocystis is to adjust the physiological state of the cell to the upcoming night environment.
Abstract: Cyanobacteria are the only bacterial species found to have a circadian clock. We used DNA microarrays to examine circadian expression patterns in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803. Our analysis identified 54 (2%) and 237 (9%) genes that exhibited circadian rhythms under stringent and relaxed filtering conditions, respectively. The expression of most cycling genes peaked around the time of transition from subjective day to night, suggesting that the main role of the circadian clock in Synechocystis is to adjust the physiological state of the cell to the upcoming night environment. There were several chromosomal regions where neighboring genes were expressed with similar circadian patterns. The physiological functions of the cycling genes were diverse and included a wide variety of metabolic pathways, membrane transport, and signal transduction. Genes involved in respiration and poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) synthesis showed coordinated circadian expression, suggesting that the regulation is important for the supply of energy and carbon source in the night. Genes involved in transcription and translation also followed circadian cycling patterns. These genes may be important for output of the rhythmic information generated by the circadian clock. Our findings provided critical insights into the importance of the circadian clock on cellular physiology and the mechanism of clock-controlled gene regulation.

TL;DR: In this article, a passive scalar with Sc=1 transported by steady homogeneous turbulence at Rλ =427 and Pλ=427 is studied by using high-resolution direct numerical simulation.
Abstract: Statistics of a passive scalar with Sc=1 transported by steady homogeneous turbulence at Rλ=427 and Pλ=427 is studied by using high-resolution direct numerical simulation. The Obukhov–Corrsin constant of the three-dimensional scalar spectrum in the inertial-convective range is found to be 0.68±0.04. It is proved that the -law for the scalar-velocity triple correlation holds in both inertial-convective and viscous-convective ranges when Sc>1, and found that the -law is approached with increase in Peclet number. Structure functions of the passive scalar increment and their local scaling exponents are computed as functions of the separation distance, and it is found that there exist two scaling ranges: the inertial-convective range and a narrow precursory range to the viscous-convective range. The scaling exponents in the inertial-convective range are found to be smaller than those of the velocity field and do not saturate, whereas they saturate at about 1.5 in the short precursory range to the viscous-convective range. It is also found that, contrary to the scalar case, the mixed scalar velocity structure function has a well-developed single scaling range. The scalar and scalar dissipation fields are visualized and compared with the kinetic energy dissipation field. The scalar field has a particular shape with a large-scale plateau, sharp cliff and deep valley, a mesa-canyon structure.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of water and hydrochloric acid addition for the hydrolysis and polymerization reaction on the crystal lattice or the molecular structure, and on the crystallization behaviour of prepared precursors, were examined by using Raman, and infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, DTA-TG and carbon analysis.
Abstract: TiO2 precursors were prepared by the sol-gel method using titanium tetraisopropoxide. The effects of water and hydrochloric acid addition for the hydrolysis and polymerization reaction on the crystal lattice or the molecular structure, and on the crystallization behaviour of prepared precursors, were examined by using Raman, and infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, DTA-TG and carbon analysis. The quantity of unhydrolysed alkyls in precursors decreased with increasing amounts of H2O and HCl addition, but the alkyls always remained. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the molecular structure of prepared amorphous precursors resembled that of the anatase phase with increased H2O and HCl addition. On the crystallization process of these precursors, the ratio of anatase formed at 310 °C was influenced by residual unhydrolysed alkyls. Steric hindrance by the residual alkyls preventing crystallization to crystalline anatase was observed, and there was estimated to be 2.5 mol of octahedral coordination of Ti-O per 1 mol of residual alkyls. It is noted that crystallization of the anatase phase and the transformation from anatase to the rutile phase were also observed on long-term ageing of precursors at room temperature.
