TL;DR: In this paper, a monograph devoted to the spectral theory of the Sturm-Liouville operator and the Dirac system has been published, with a focus on the spectral properties of the spectral theories of differential operators.
Abstract: This monograph is devoted to the spectral theory of the Sturm- Liouville operator and to the spectral theory of the Dirac system In addition, some results are given for nth order ordinary differential operators Those parts of this book which concern nth order operators can serve as simply an introduction to this domain, which at the present time has already had time to become very broad For the convenience of the reader who is not familiar with abstract spectral theory, the authors have inserted a chapter (Chapter 13) in which they discuss this theory, concisely and in the main without proofs, and indicate various connections with the spectral theory of differential operators

Abstract: The basic nonlinear equation which describes the Alfven waves, with small but finite amplitude propagating along the magnetic field in cold plasmas, is derived modifying the reductive perturbation method proposed by Taniuti and Wei. Then as a result, the nonlinear dispersion relation is obtained through a procedure which clarifies the physical meaning. Furthermore, the modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation which describes the modulated Alfven wave more correctly than the previous works is proposed. An example of the nonlinear phenomena is shown by the numerical calculations of the initial value problem, using our basic equation for the Alfven waves.

TL;DR: The homogeneous olefin metathesis of 2-heptene with a catalyst system of WCl6-Bu4Sn was investigated in this article, where the optimum ratios of Bu4Sn to WCl 6 were in the wide range of 1.02.
Abstract: The homogeneous olefin metathesis of 2-heptene with a catalyst system of WCl6-Bu4Sn was investigated. The optimum ratios of Bu4Sn to WCl6 were in the wide range of 1.02.0, and the Friedel-Crafts products were less than 3% when the ratios were more than 1.0. The addition of ether to the reaction medium has a relatively little influence on the catalyst activity. Bu3SnCl and Bu2SnCl2 were not effective as the cocatalyst and the decrease of the conversion with the excess amount of Bu4Sn was not significant. It therefore seems likely that Bu4Sn can provide only one alkyl group for the substitution of WCl6 and the substitution attains equilibrium in the first step of the catalyst formation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the sodium, chloride and sulfate contents of synthetic calcite or aragonite and found that sulfate ions are incorporated into calcitic calcium carbonate more easily than into aragonitic calcite.
Abstract: Calcite and/or aragonite were formed from calcium bicarbonate solutions containing sodium sulfate, sodium chloride and magnesium chloride of various concentrations. Sodium, chloride and sulfate contents of synthetic calcite or aragonite were measured. Sodium and chloride ions are incorporated into aragonitic calcium carbonate more easily than into calcitic calcium carbonate, although sodium and chloride ions in the parent solution favor the formation of calcitic calcium carbonate. On the other hand, sulfate ions are incorporated into calcitic calcium carbonate more easily than into aragonitic calcium carbonate, although sulfate ions in the parent solution favor the formation of aragonitic calcium carbonate. Sodium content of aragonite, which is precipitated from calcium bicarbonate solution containing sodium sulfate, sodium chloride and magnesium chloride, exhibits a maximum value together with sulfate content of aragonite.

TL;DR: It is found that the hormone progesterone affects the activity of the thermosensitive neurones in the preoptic area of the brain in women during the menstrual cycle and during early pregnancy.
Abstract: FEMALE body temperature rises by about 0.5 °C at or near ovulation and remains elevated during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Sustained elevation of basal body temperature is observed also during early pregnancy. These effects have been attributed to progesterone, but little is known about the mechanisms involved1. We have now found that the hormone affects the activity of the thermosensitive neurones in the preoptic area of the brain.

TL;DR: A provisional estimation of the periods which might be required for polyps of each grade to become malignant and to kill patients was attempted.
Abstract: The relationship between age of the patient and the histologic gradation of mucosal polyps (total 331 cases) and invasive carcinoma of the large intestine was studied in a surgical series (261 cases) as well as in an autopsy series (3,178 cases). The average ages of the patients increased steadily with the advance of histologic atypism from 40.7 years with grade I polyps to 58.7 years with invasive carcinoma in the autopsy series. From the differences in average ages of the patients, a provisional estimation of the periods which might be required for polyps of each grade to become malignant and to kill patients was attempted. The following figures were suggested; 3.6 years for polyps of grade V pseudostratification, 8.3 years for grade IV, 11.4 years for grade III, 13.1 years for grade II, and 18.0 years for grade I.

TL;DR: In this paper, the phase diagram of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 -K 2 SO4 mixed crystal system was obtained from dielectric and pyroelectric study, and it was found that the ferroelectric phase transition temperature T c decreases with the increase of concentration of K + ions.
Abstract: The phase diagram of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 -K 2 SO 4 mixed crystal system was obtained from dielectric and pyroelectric study. It was found that the ferroelectric phase transition temperature T c decreases with the increase of concentration of K + ions, and ferroelectric phase disappears if mixed crystals contain more than 70% of K 2 SO 4 . It was also found that the spontaneous polarization of mixed crystals with low concentration of K + ion (up to 30%) increases first to maximum, and then gradually decreases as the temperature is lowered. These experimental observations suggest that in this system single homogeneous polarization may not be an order parameter and the dipole arrangements of this system may be not ferroelectric but ferrielectric as was first pointed out by Unruh.

TL;DR: Investigation on the furano-terponoid inducing factor demonstrated that the factor was 20 mm KCl-soluble, non-dialyzable, acetone-precipitable, heat-unstable, passing through Sephadex G–25 column without sieving and partially inactivated by pronase, indicating that the factors was a high molecular weight compound, perhaps of a proteinacious property.
Abstract: When sweet potato root tissues were infested by the larvae of sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius and West Indian sweet potato weevil, Euscepes postfasciatus, furano-terpenoids and coumarins were produced in brown necrotic layer formed during the infestation. The larval homogenates of both weevils also induced in the tissue the production of furano-terpenoids and coumarins, as well as the formation of necrotic layer. The larval homogenate of sweet potato weevil induced also ethylene formation, the marker of injury in the tissue. Investigations on the furano-terponoid inducing factor demonstrated that the factor was 20 mm KCl-soluble, non-dialyzable, acetone-precipitable, (NH4)2SO4-precipitable, heat-unstable, passing through Sephadex G–25 column without sieving and partially inactivated by pronase, indicating that the factor was a high molecular weight compound, perhaps of a proteinacious property. It is likely that the factor causes injury or death to sweet potato root tissue, leading to the formation ...

TL;DR: Using whole cell invertase of Saccharomyces pastorianus, entrapped in spherical agar pellets, sucrose hydrolysis was carried out in a continuously fed fluidized bed reactor.
Abstract: Using whole cell invertase of Saccharomyces pastorianus, entrapped in spherical agar pellets, sucrose hydrolysis was carried out in a continuously fed fluidized bed reactor. The effective rate of reaction determined experimentally for the catalytic pellet was correlated with particle radius (R), intraparticle concentration of enzyme (Ep) and external concentration of substrate (SR). The results were elucidated by theoretical analysis incorporating internal mass transfer resistance. At high degrees of diffusional resistance, the effectiveness factor was successfully estimted from Bischoff's equation. A dimensionless number, mA R(k2Ep/KmD)0.5(Km/(Km + SR)), was used conveniently to predict the effectiveness factor in those cases wher the intraparticle diffusional effect was less significant. This number was employed to determine critical pellet size for an optimal reaction. The relationship between the properties of the pellet (size and intraparticle enzyme activity) and its apparent kinetic constants (k′2 and K′m), estimated according to Lineweaver-Burk, are discussed.

TL;DR: Histologic gradation by simple, concrete criteria based on the extent of epithelial pseudostratification was applied to biopsy specimens of 230 mucosal polyps and 130 invasive carcinomas of the large intestine, and suggested a gradual transition from normal tissue to invasive carcinoma through the processes of hyperplasia, adenoma, and carcinomain situ.
Abstract: Histologic gradation by simple, concrete criteria based on the extent of epithelial pseudostratification was applied to biopsy specimens of 230 mucosal polyps and 130 invasive carcinomas of the large intestine. This gradation was in excellent agreement with the atypias studied, such as increases in mitotic figures, nuclear chromatin and pleomorphism, and decreased mucin secretion. Foci and/or tendency towards glandular fusion and/or glands back-to-back were found in 26 of 28 polyps showing grade V pseudostratification, against two of 202 polyps showing grades 0 to IV. Adenomatous residues of grade III and/or grade IV were found in 42 of 130 cases of invasive carcinoma.

TL;DR: In this paper, the approximation method developed by Singwi et al. for classical distribution function is applied to the Wigner distribution function in a quantum system and a quantum mechanical expression is derived for dielectric function of an interacting electron gas.
Abstract: The approximation method developed by Singwi et al. for classical distribution function is applied to the Wigner distribution function in a quantum system. In this way a quantum mechanical expression is derived for dielectric function of an interacting electron gas. Self-consistent numerical calculations of structure factor and dielectric function are carried out for an electron gas at metallic density of electrons. Pair distribution function, compressibility, correlation energy and dispersion relation of plasmons are numerically calculated from the calculated structure factor. The calculated results of the pair distribution function are found to be positive for the entire range of real metallic density of electrons.
