Abstract: A straight forward method for immobilizing Pt-Co alloyed nanoparticles onto nitrogen-doped CNx nanotubes is presented. The as-prepared electrocatalysts exhibit good performance for oxygen reduction reaction in acidic medium arising from the high-dispersion and alloying effect of the Pt-Co nanoparticles and the intrinsic catalytic capacity of the CNx nanotubes.

TL;DR: A regulation strategy was proposed which reinforced acetyl-CoA and NADPH supply at a specific fermentation stage and showed an apparent increase of 35% in DHA content and total lipid content.
Abstract: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) production in Schizochytrium sp. HX-308 was evaluated by detecting enzymatic activities of ATP:citrate lyase (EC 4.1.3.8), malic enzyme (EC 1.1.1.40) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49) at different fermentation stages. According to the analysis, a regulation strategy was proposed which reinforced acetyl-CoA and NADPH supply at a specific fermentation stage. DHA content of total fatty acids was increased from 35 to 60% by the addition of 4 g/L malic acid at the rapid lipid accumulation stage. Total lipid content also showed an apparent increase of 35% and reached 19 g/L when 40 mL ethanol/L was added at the late lipid accumulation stage.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of polypropylene (PP) fiber on the mechanical properties and volume stability of geopolymers was investigated, and the results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the appearances of crack growths confirm that PP fiber can offer a bridging effect over the harmful pores and defects and change the expanding ways of cracks.
Abstract: To improve the environmental benefits and solve the problems of large shrinkage and high brittleness, the partial replacement of calcined kaolin by fly ash as a raw material for geopolymer synthesis and the influences of polypropylene (PP) fiber on the mechanical properties and volume stability were investigated. The results show that compressive strength of the geopolymer containing 33.3%(mass fraction) fly ash by steam curing at 80 °C for 6 d is improved by 35.5%. The 3-day compressive strength, flexural strength and impacting energy of geopolymers containing 0.05%PP fiber increase by 67.8%, 36.1% and 6.25%, while the shrinkage and modulus of compressibility decrease by 38.6% and 31.3%, respectively. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the appearances of crack growths confirm that PP fiber can offer a bridging effect over the harmful pores and defects and change the expanding ways of cracks, resulting in a great improvement of strength and toughness.

TL;DR: It is shown that simple BCP-templated galvanic displacement reactions yield dense arrays of mushroom-shaped gold nanopillars with a period of 50 nm, characterized by high SERS efficiencies.
Abstract: Up to now, little effort has been made to exploit large-area high-throughput patterning by block copolymer (BCP) lithography to generate nanostructured substrates with periods well below 100 nm for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We show that simple BCP-templated galvanic displacement reactions yield dense arrays of mushroom-shaped gold nanopillars with a period of 50 nm. The nanoporous BCP films used as templates were obtained by swelling-induced reconstruction of reverse micelle monolayers deposited on silicon wafers. Coupling of adjacent mushroom caps almost impinging on each other combined with their strong local curvature results in a high spatial density of hot spots in the narrow gaps between them. Thus, substrates characterized by high SERS efficiencies are obtained.

TL;DR: Simulation results indicate that the preferential orientation of water molecules in coordination shells of these two cations presents an anomalous change in the CNTs and causes a diameter-dependent variation for the interaction energy between the cation and water molecule in its coordination shell.
Abstract: We performed molecular dynamics simulations of the hydration of Na+ and K+ in infinitely long single-walled armchair carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at 298 K. Simulation results indicate that the preferential orientation of water molecules in coordination shells of these two cations presents an anomalous change in the CNTs and causes a diameter-dependent variation for the interaction energy between the cation and water molecules in its coordination shell. In the five CNTs of this work, it is energetically favorable for confining a hydrated K+ inside the two narrow CNTs with diameters of 0.60 and 0.73 nm, whereas the situation is reverse inside the wide CNTs with diameters of 0.87, 1.0, and 1.28 nm. This finding is important for CNT applications in ionic systems that control the selectivity and the ionic flow.
