TL;DR: In this paper, a carbon−sulfur-codoped TiO2 (TCS) was synthesized by the hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate in a mixed aqueous solution containing thiourea and urea.
Abstract: A novel photocatalyst, carbon−sulfur-codoped TiO2 (TCS) was synthesized by the hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate in a mixed aqueous solution containing thiourea and urea. The codoped TiO2 was also prepared directly by calcining amorphous or anatase TiO2 with a mixture of thiourea and urea. The as-prepared powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV−visible reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis−thermogravimetry (TG-DSC). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photodegradation of 4-chlorophenol under both UV and visible irradiation. By investigating the crystal structures, optical properties, and photocatalytic activities of various samples, we found that the wet chemistry process and the crystal transition process from amorphous to anatase seemed to be critical to the doping process.

TL;DR: The singlet oxygen photo‐generated from the Pdots under irradiation at 488 nm can effectively induce the apoptosis and death of tumor cells for photodynamic cancer therapy in vitro.
Abstract: A series of semiconducting polymer dots (Pdots) composed of phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes and polyfluorene units in the main polymer chains are designed, synthesized, and applied in ratiometric oxygen sensing and photodynamic cancer therapy. The ultrasmall Pdots with particle size less than 10 nm are fabricated in aqueous solution on account of amphiphilic nature of the polymers. The Pdots possess fine photostability, biocompatibility, and efficient energy transfer from the polymer main chain to the Ir(III) complex. By utilizing the excited-state energy transfer from phosphorescent Pdots to the ground state molecular oxygen, these Pdots are applied in the optical sensing of oxygen with ratiometric and naked-eye detection as well as high sensitivity in aqueous solution. The Pdots also show low cytotoxicity and can pass across the cell membrane to enter into the cytoplasm. The singlet oxygen photo-generated from the Pdots under irradiation at 488 nm can effectively induce the apoptosis and death of tumor cells for photodynamic cancer therapy in vitro.

TL;DR: A simple, versatile nanoparticulate system for simultaneous deep‐tissue imaging and drug molecule release in vivo is demonstrated.
Abstract: Although multifunctional upconversion imaging probes have recently attracted considerable interest in biomedical research, there are currently few methods for stabilizing these luminescent nanoprobes with oligonucleotides in biological systems. Herein, a method to robustly disperse upconversion nanoprobes in physiological buffers based on rational design and synthesis of nanoconjugates comprising hairpin-DNA-modified gold nanoparticles is presented. This approach imparts the upconversion nanoprobes with excellent biocompatibility and circumvents the problem of particle agglomeration. By combining single-band anti-Stokes near-infrared emission and the photothermal effect mediated by the coupling of gold to upconversion nanoparticles, a simple, versatile nanoparticulate system for simultaneous deep-tissue imaging and drug molecule release in vivo is demonstrated.
