TL;DR: The transient photocurrent, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence and pyroelectric potential characterizations indicate that the infrared-light-responsive carriers driver significantly promotes the photogenerated charge separation, accelerates carrier migration, and prolongs carrier lifetime.
Abstract: Infrared light, more than 50% of the solar light energy, is long-termly ignored in the photocatalysis field due to its low photon energy. Herein, infrared-light-responsive photoinduced carriers driver is first constructed taking advantage of pyroelectric effect for enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In order to give full play to its role, the photocatalytic reaction is localized on the surface and interface of the composite based on a new semi-immersion type heat collected photocatalytic microfiber system. The system is consisted of distinctive pyroelectric substrate poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluropropylene (PVDF-HFP), typical photothermal material carbon nanotube (CNT), and representative photocatalyst CdS. The transient photocurrent, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence and pyroelectric potential characterizations indicate that the infrared-light-responsive carriers driver significantly promotes the photogenerated charge separation, accelerates carrier migration, and prolongs carrier lifetime. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency is remarkably improved more than five times with the highest average apparent quantum yield of 16.9%. It may open up new horizons to photocatalytic technology for the more efficient use of infrared light.

TL;DR: An in vivo study showed a significant decline of Escherichia coli colonies with a 5-log reduction, indicating the APEG2400-PHMB coating surface worked effectively in the rodent subcutaneous infection model, indicating this PHMB-based block copolymer coating is believed to be an effective strategy to prevent biomaterial-associated infections.
Abstract: In recent years, microbial colonization on the surface of biomedical implants/devices has become a severe threat to human health. Herein, surface-immobilized guanidine derivative block copolymers create an antimicrobial and antifouling dual-functional coating. We report the preparation of an antimicrobial and antifouling block copolymer by the conjugation of polyhexanide (PHMB) with either allyl glycidyl ether or allyloxy polyethylene glycol (APEG; MW 1200 and 2400). The allyl glycidyl ether modified PHMB (A-PHMB) and allyloxy polyethylene glycol1200/2400 modified PHMB (APEG1200/2400-PHMB) copolymers were grafted onto a silicone rubber surface as a bottlebrush-like coating, respectively, using a plasma-UV-assisted surface-initiated polymerization. Both A-PHMB and APEG1200/2400-PHMB coatings exhibited excellent broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties against Gram-negative/positive bacteria and fungi. The APEG2400-PHMB coating displayed an improved antibiofilm as well as antifouling properties and a long re...

TL;DR: It is shown that simple BCP-templated galvanic displacement reactions yield dense arrays of mushroom-shaped gold nanopillars with a period of 50 nm, characterized by high SERS efficiencies.
Abstract: Up to now, little effort has been made to exploit large-area high-throughput patterning by block copolymer (BCP) lithography to generate nanostructured substrates with periods well below 100 nm for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We show that simple BCP-templated galvanic displacement reactions yield dense arrays of mushroom-shaped gold nanopillars with a period of 50 nm. The nanoporous BCP films used as templates were obtained by swelling-induced reconstruction of reverse micelle monolayers deposited on silicon wafers. Coupling of adjacent mushroom caps almost impinging on each other combined with their strong local curvature results in a high spatial density of hot spots in the narrow gaps between them. Thus, substrates characterized by high SERS efficiencies are obtained.
