TL;DR: An effective approach is demonstrated in tailoring the structural and electrochemical properties of birnessite towards superior cathode performance in sodium-ion batteries, enabling outstanding cyclability and rate performance.
Abstract: Sodium transition metal oxides with layered structures are attractive cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to their large theoretical specific capacities. However, these layered oxides suffer from poor cyclability and low rate performance because of structural instability and sluggish electrode kinetics. In the present work, we show the sodiation reaction of Mn3O4 to yield crystal water free NaMnO2-y-δ(OH)2y, a monoclinic polymorph of sodium birnessite bearing Na/Mn(OH)8 hexahedra and Na/MnO6 octahedra. With the new polymorph, NaMnO2-y-δ(OH)2y exhibits an enlarged interlayer distance of about 7 A, which is in favor of fast sodium ion migration and good structural stability. In combination of the favorable nanosheet morphology, NaMn2-y-δ(OH)2y cathode delivers large specific capacity up to 211.9 mAh g-1, excellent cycle performance (94.6% capacity retention after 1000 cycles), and outstanding rate capability (156.0 mAh g-1 at 50 C). This study demonstrates an effective approach in tailoring the structural and electrochemical properties of birnessite towards superior cathode performance in sodium-ion batteries.

TL;DR: This paper is concerned with the variance-constrained distributed filtering problem for a class of time-varying systems subject to multiplicative noises, unknown but bounded disturbances and deception attacks over sensor networks.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the variance-constrained distributed filtering problem for a class of time-varying systems subject to multiplicative noises, unknown but bounded disturbances and deception attacks over sensor networks. The available measurements at each sensing node are collected not only from the individual sensor but also from its neighbors according to the given topology. A new deception attack model is proposed where the malicious signals are injected by the adversary into both control and measurement data during the process of information transmission via the communication network. By resorting to the recursive linear matrix inequality approach, a sufficient condition is established for the existence of the desired filter satisfying the prespecified requirements on the estimation error variance. Subsequently, an optimization problem is formulated in order to seek the filter parameters ensuring the locally optimal filtering performance at each time instant. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed algorithm.

TL;DR: A product aspect ranking framework, which automatically identifies the important aspects of products from online consumer reviews, aiming at improving the usability of the numerous reviews, and develops a probabilistic aspect ranking algorithm to infer the importance of aspects.
Abstract: Numerous consumer reviews of products are now available on the Internet. Consumer reviews contain rich and valuable knowledge for both firms and users. However, the reviews are often disorganized, leading to difficulties in information navigation and knowledge acquisition. This article proposes a product aspect ranking framework, which automatically identifies the important aspects of products from online consumer reviews, aiming at improving the usability of the numerous reviews. The important product aspects are identified based on two observations: 1) the important aspects are usually commented on by a large number of consumers and 2) consumer opinions on the important aspects greatly influence their overall opinions on the product. In particular, given the consumer reviews of a product, we first identify product aspects by a shallow dependency parser and determine consumer opinions on these aspects via a sentiment classifier. We then develop a probabilistic aspect ranking algorithm to infer the importance of aspects by simultaneously considering aspect frequency and the influence of consumer opinions given to each aspect over their overall opinions. The experimental results on a review corpus of 21 popular products in eight domains demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Moreover, we apply product aspect ranking to two real-world applications, i.e., document-level sentiment classification and extractive review summarization, and achieve significant performance improvements, which demonstrate the capacity of product aspect ranking in facilitating real-world applications.

TL;DR: The results indicated that hordenine can serve as a competitive inhibitor for signaling molecules and act as a novel QS-based agent to defend against foodborne pathogens.
Abstract: The quorum sensing (QS) inhibitory activity of hordenine from sprouting barley against foodborne pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa was evaluated for the first time here. At concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 mg mL–1, hordenine inhibited the levels of acyl-homoserine lactones. The enhanced susceptibility of hordenine with netilmicin on P. aeruginosa PAO1 biofilm formation as well as their efficiency in disrupting preformed biofilms was also evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Hordenine treatment inhibited the production of QS-related extracellular virulence factors of P. aeruginosa PAO1. Additionally, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated that the expressions of QS-related genes, lasI, lasR, rhlI, and rhlR, were significantly suppressed. Our results indicated that hordenine can serve as a competitive inhibitor for signaling molecules and act as a novel QS-based agent to defend against foodborne pathogens.
