TL;DR: It is revealed that the superexchange-driven ferromagnetism is closely related to the virtual exchange gap, and lowering this gap by isovalent alloying can significantly enhance the ferromagnetic (FM) coupling.
Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic semiconductors have been recognized as the cornerstone for next-generation electric devices, but the development is highly limited by the weak ferromagnetic coupl...

TL;DR: The observed piezo-catalytic properties of BFO nanosheets pave the way towards a non-toxic, highly efficient and sustainable technology for hydrogen generation or dye decomposition through harvesting waste vibration energy from the environment.
Abstract: In this study, mechanical vibration is used for hydrogen generation and decomposition of dye molecules, with the help of BiFeO3 (BFO) square nanosheets. A high hydrogen production rate of ≈124.1 μmol g-1 is achieved under mechanical vibration (100 W) for 1 h at the resonant frequency of the BFO nanosheets. The decomposition ratio of Rhodamine B dye reaches up to ≈94.1 % after mechanical vibration of the BFO catalyst for 50 min. The vibration-induced catalysis of the BFO square nanosheets may be attributed to the piezocatalytic properties of BFO and the high specific surface area of the nanosheets. The uncompensated piezoelectric charges on the surfaces of BFO nanosheets induced by mechanical vibration result in a built-in electric field across the nanosheets. Unlike a photocatalyst for water splitting, which requires a proper band edge position for hydrogen evolution, such a requirement is not needed in piezocatalytic water splitting, where the band tilting under the induced piezoelectric field will make the conduction band of BFO more negative than the H2 /H2 O redox potential (0 V) for hydrogen generation.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates a new Cu@Cu4Ni NW conductive elastomer composite with ultrahigh stability for the first time and could endow great chances for transparent, flexible, stretchable, and wearable electronic and optoelectronic devices.
Abstract: Low cost and high conductivity make copper (Cu) nanowire (NW) electrodes an attractive material to construct flexible and stretchable electronic skins, displays, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), solar cells, and electrochromic windows. However, the vulnerabilities that Cu NW electrodes have to oxidation, bending, and stretching still present great challenges. This work demonstrates a new Cu@Cu4Ni NW conductive elastomer composite with ultrahigh stability for the first time. Cu@Cu4Ni NWs, facilely synthesized through a one-pot method, have highly crystalline alloyed shells, clear and abrupt interfaces, lengths more than 50 μm, and smooth surfaces. These virtues provide the NW-elastomer composites with a low resistance of 62.4 ohm/sq at 80% transparency, which is even better than the commercial ITO/PET flexible electrodes. In addition, the fluctuation amplitude of resistance is within 2 ohm/sq within 30 days, meaning that at ΔR/R0 = 1, the actual lifetime is estimated to be more than 1200 days. Neithe...

TL;DR: In this article, a general method of describing the spin-lattice interactions in magnetic solids is proposed in terms of first-principles calculations, and the ground-state structure of a representative spin-frustrated spinel is tetragonally distorted, in agreement with experiments.
Abstract: A novel general method of describing the spin-lattice interactions in magnetic solids is proposed in terms of first-principles calculations. The spin exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, as well as their derivatives with respect to atomic displacements, can be evaluated efficiently on the basis of density-functional calculations for four ordered spin states. By taking into consideration the spin-spin interactions, the phonons, and the coupling between them, we show that the ground-state structure of a representative spin-frustrated spinel, MgCr${}_{2}$O${}_{4}$, is tetragonally distorted, in agreement with experiments. However, our calculations find the lowest energy for the collinear spin ground state, in contrast to previously suggested noncollinear models.
