Abstract: Macroporous polystyrene and polyvinylpyridine beads with quaternary ammonium and tertiary groups were tailor-made for the adsorption of unconjugated bilirubin. In vitro studies in order to obtain high adsorption capacity, the synthesized macroporous resin should have an average pore size of about 160 A and with surface area as large as possible. As the crosslinking of the resin increased from 4%-40% the amount of bilirubin adsorbed increased from 0.17 mg/g to 2.0 mg/g. Resins containing strong basic groups have higher adsorption capacities than their corresponding weak base groups. Adsorption mechanism studies showed that both chemical and physical adsorption took place. Adsorption of bilirubin in plasma was some what lower than in buffer solution.

The experimental verification has been conducted with ring-shaped polystyrene samples obtained by anionic polymerization of styrene with sodium naphthalene (sodium dihydronaphthylide) according to the multistep reaction of Hild, Kohler and Rempp.

Abstract: A new adsorption chromatography procedure for the purification of calmodulin from bovine brain was developed using polymeric adsorbent 3520. Calmodulin was first isolated by DEAE-Cellulose column chromatography and further purified to apparent homogeneity following elution with 50% ethanol from the adsorbent column. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed one band either in the presence of Ca2+ or EGTA. The polymeric adsorbent 3520 is a non-polar polymer lacking exchangeable groups. The selective adsorption of calmodulin is based on hydrophobic interaction within the matrix, and is Ca2+ independent. Neither high salt (0.5 M NaCl) nor EGTA (5 mM) was able to elute the CaM from the adsorption column whereas ethanol (50%) eluted it completely. This method is simple to use and It provides highly purified calmodulin with high yield.

Abstract: A jaundiced dog model was made by common bile duct-inferior vena cava shunt with a silicon rubber tube. Blood bilirubin levels increased from 0.25 +/- 0.16 (SD) mg% to 15 +/- 1.4 (SD) mg%. These dog models were treated with a column containing 200 gm of macroreticular resin NK-110 which was linked between the femoral artery and vein. The rate of blood flow through the column was 200 ml/min. It was shown that total bilirubin reduced from 15 +/- 1.4 (SD) to 7.4 +/- 0.61 (SD), conjugated bilirubin decreased from 6.97 +/- 0.63 to 3.5 +/- 0.33 (SD) and unconjugated bilirubin from 7.8 +/- 2.1 to 4.2 +/- 0.4 (SD). There were no significant changes in protein, electrolyte, blood gases and acid base balance. Results show that NK-110 resin has good blood-compatible and adsorption properties.

Abstract: A new clustering algorithm ISOETRP has been developed. Several new objectives have been introduced to make ISOETRP particularly suitable to hierarchical pattern classification. These objectives are: a) minimizing overlap between pattern class groups, b) maximizing entropy reduction, and c) keeping balance between these groups. The overall objective to be optimized is GAIN=Entropy Reduction/(Overlap+1).

Abstract: In order to examine the relation between bowel movements and constipational tendency broken down by age, sex and regional group, a survey was conducted on 242 college women (18-x-20 years of age) and their parents (63 mothers and 52 fathers) living in and around Osaka, 172 college women in Fukuoka (18-~20 years of age) and 142 in Taegu, Korea (16-x-22 years of age). Those who had bowel movements less than three times a week were classified as suffering from constipation. Chi square test was used for cross totalization of surveyed items. (1) Difference by age and sex. 1) Sixteen percent of students, 19% of their mothers and 4% of fathers complained of constipation. The difference in the frequency of bowel movements among the three groups was significant (p<0.001). 2) Frequency of hard stools increased with the degree of constipation in students (p<0.001) and mothers (p<0.001), while no differences were found in the nature of stools among the three groups (p<0. 10). 3) A correlation was noted in fathers between the time required for a bowel movement and its frequency (p<0.005). The time required for a bowel movement tended to be longer in the order of students, mothers and, then fathers (p<0.001) . 4) A correlation was found between the time of defecation and the degree of constipation (in students : p<0.001, mothers : p<0.001, fathers : p<0.005) . Eighty-one percent or more of those with regular movement had a bowel movement between the time they rose and after breakfast, while persons with constipation had no definite time of defecation. The time of defecation among the three groups was also different (p<0.001) . (2) Differences by location of domicile. 1) Of the students in Osaka, Fukuoka and Taegu, 16%, 31% and 61% respectively were suffering from constipation. The difference in the frequency of bowel movements among the three groups was significant (p<0.001) . 2) Frequency of hard stools increased with the degree of constipation in Osaka (p<0.001) and Fukuoka (p<0.005), but no differences were found in the nature of stools among the three regions (p<0.05) .

Abstract: The change of the pore structure of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer caused by the presenceof the functional group has been discribed in this paper. The result indicates that the average poreredius, pore volume and surface area were reduced after the introduction of the functional groups.However, the surfase area of the resin containing--NH_2 or --NHCH_3 group and treated with waterand isopropyl alcohol was inareased prominently in comparison with that of the matrix copolymer. When the strongly polar ion exchange resin absorbs water, its pore diameter increases sharply.But the pore diameter of the weakly polar ion exchange resin does not change very much when itabsorbs water gradually.

It posits that these categories, or rather, this category [in the sense that the two are symbiotic and intertwined] is a product of the development of Chinese philosophy itself. The fundamental connotations of this category of ti-yong are: first, it is a relationship between reality and its effects, functions, and character; second, it is a relationship between ontological substance (essential nature) and phenomenon. Abstract: The present paper introduces an experimental method for measuring the width of illuminated and short-circuited Ni/a-Si:H Schottky barriers. The current-voltage curves for the Schottky barrier solar cells under an AM1 illumination of 100 mW/cm2 are calculated by using the parameters determined by experiments. The diffusion length of holes ina-Si:H obtained from the illuminatedI–V curve is consistent with the results measured by the author with the surface photovoltage method in 1983. The factors affecting the fill factor are analysed on the basis of the calculated results. A comparison of the calculated results to the experimental ones reveals that the very low fill factor of the solar cells measured is due to series and shunt resistances rather than the low diffusion length of the holes.

Abstract: Replacement-Diffusion method is reported to prepare, Mg2Ni-XMg alloys(I). A comparative study of the action of hydrogen has been carried out on (I) and another samples (II) which prepared by metal-lugical method as reported in the literature, a three times faster hydrogenation of (I) compared with (II), and the hydriding rated of (I) can be measured without pre-activation by hydriding-dehydriding process. Thermoanalysis, X-Ray analysis and Pressure-Composition isotherms carried out on (I) show that the amount of Mg2Ni in the alloy as small as 0.23%(by wt.), the hydrogenation occured as usual and the main product is MgH2 in addition to small amount of Mg2NiH4.

Abstract: Five new bis (β-methoxycarbonylethyl) tin derivatives including R_2Sn(acac)_2(R=CH_3OCOCH_2CH_2), R_2Sn(dbm)_2, R_2SnO, R1/2Sn (dbm)_2 [R~1=CH_3OCOCH(CH_3) CH_2], and R1/2SnO were synthesized. The structures of these compounds were compared with R_2SnCl_2, R1/2SnCl_2, (C_8H_(17))_2SnCl_2, and(C_8H_(17))_2Sn (OCOC_(11)H_(23))_2. ~1H NMR, IR and Mossbauer spectroscopic data showed that R_2'Sn (dbm)_2 contained a cis C—Sn—C unit, (C_8H_(17))_2~- Sn (OCOC_(11)H_(23))_2 existed as a mixture of two isomers, while the other compounds had a trans C—Sn—C unit.

Abstract: This paper presents a principle to create Almost Optimal Dynamical 2–3 trees based on the theory of Milleret al.,[4] and gives a searching algorithm, an insertion algorithm and a deletion algorithm for these 2–3 trees. Experimental result given in this paper indicates that these 2–3 trees have very good performance at node-visit cost. We discuss asymptotic property of the 2–3 trees asN→∞, and evaluate its approximate height,h=log2.45(N+1), whereN is the number of nodes of a 2–3 tree. Finally, this paper analyses the time complexities of the algorithms, which areO(log2.45(N+1)).

Abstract: The mass spectral behaviour of a new type of organophosphorus compound, 1,3,2-benzodioxaphospholes, under 70 eV electron impact has been studied by means of high and low resolution mass spectrometry as well as by B/E and B2/E linked scans. The influence of different substituents in the molecule (O, S or N) on the mass spectra is investigated. The reason for isomerization between oxygen and sulphur within a molecule studied by mass spectrometry is discussed.

Abstract: The spectra of the optical absorption coefficient in low absorption region are obtained by using a normalization procedure for the photoconductivity spectra. The results are explained in terms of the optical transition of electrons from localized states in the exponential valence band tail and in dangling bond states 1.0 eV below the conduction band edge to extended conduction band states. Then the density of the gap states below the Fermi levelEF is obtained. From the investigation of recombination kinetics, the average density of the gap states over the range of\((F_{F_n } - E_F )\)) and the density of the gap states above the Fermi levelEF are obtained. These indicate that the width of the conduction band tail is smaller than that of the valence band tail.
