Abstract: This study was undertaken to quantify the effect of aluminum and calcium on membrane permeability. The influence of Ca 2+ (0.2-3.7 millimolar) and Al 3+ (0-3.7 millimolar) on the permeability of root cortical cells of Quercus rubra was measured using three nonelectrolytes (urea, methyl urea, and ethyl urea) as permeators of progressively increasing lipid solubility. Water permeability was also measured. Al 3+ (a) increased membrane permeability to the nonelectrolytes, (b) decreased the membrane9s partiality for lipid permeators, and (c) decreased membrane permeability to water. Ca 2+ had effects on permeability that were opposite to those of Al 3+ . When Al 3+ and Ca 2+ were tested in combination, these opposite effects counteracted each other. The results suggest that Al 3+ altered the architecture of membrane lipids.

Abstract: Raman spectra of ordinary and extraordinary phonons in LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 are recorded under a set of angles between wave vector and optic axis with the same backward scattering geometry, which makes all of the extraordinary phonons to appear in one directional-dispersion spectra series, and the directional dispersion is reliably determined. The symmetry and the number of polar phonons in both the crystals are found to be the same, 4A1T + 4A1L + 9ET + 9EL. The directional dispersion of extraordinary phonons has thirteen branches with similar coupling in LiNbO3 and LiTaO3. [Russian Text Ignored].

Abstract: Ca2+-stimulated Mg2+-dependent ATPase (Ca2+ + Mg2+-ATPase) stimulated by calmodulin, by partial proteolysis or by oleic acid in erythrocyte membranes was inhibited by various derivatives of the naturally occurring alkaloid berbamine. The ability of these derivatives to inhibit trypsin-activated Ca2+ + Mg2+-ATPase correlated well with their ability to inhibit the calmodulin-stimulated enzyme. Inhibition of the trypsin-activated Ca2+ + Mg2+-ATPase by O-4-(ethoxybutyl)berbamine (EBB) was competitive with respect to ATP. The Ki for inhibition was about 8 microM. These results suggest that the binding site of EBB on the activated Ca2+ + Mg2+-ATPase may bear structural similarity to that on calmodulin, and may be closely related to the ATP-binding site on the enzyme.

Abstract: Three copolymers were made from the suspension polymerization of methyl acrylate, divinyl benzene and triallyl isocyanurate; acrylamide and N,N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide; and styrene and divinyl benzene. These copolymers were then converted into derivatives of hydrazides through several steps. They were used as polymeric sorbents. They sorbed in situ a little bit less than 40 mg. of urea per gram of sorbent at 37 degrees C, pH = 7.0-7.4 and the percentage of urea in the buffer solution being 130 mg%. The sorption of urea was related to the specific surface area of the sorbent, temperature of sorption and time of sorption, concentration of urea, pH value of solution etc. In order to find out whether the above-prepared derivatives of hydrazide can be used clinically as polymeric sorbents in artificial kidney system, the junior author carried out experiments with patient's dialysate as imitated to hemodialysis. From the results, it indicates the sorbents might be used in artificial kidney system because they sorbed the urea from hemodialysate as much as that of the pure urea in a buffer solution.

Abstract: A series of iron-sulfur cluster complexes (μ-RS) (μ-EtOC(O)CH2S)Fe2(CO)6 (A) have been synthesized by reductive cleavage of an S-S bond of μ-S2Fe2(CO)6 with Grignard reagents, followed by nucleophilic substitution of the intermediates, (μ-RS) (μ-XMgS)Fe2(CO)6 (B) toward ClCH2C(O)OEt. The complexes (A) may be also synthesized by CF3COOH-acidolysis of (B), followed by condensation of (μ-RS) (μ-HS)Fe2(CO)6 (C) with ClCH2C(O)OEt in the presence of Et3N. For the former method, the manipulations are more convenient and the starting materials are more easily available and much cheaper. Through conformational analysis, it has been shown that each of the complexes is a mixture of either three conformers of ae, ee and ea or two conformers in a given ratio.

Abstract: Various types of macroporous resin beads were screened for the adsorption of middle molecules in vitro. In order to obtain high adsorption capacity, the pore size of the resin should be large enough to allow diffusion of the middle molecules. The adsorption capacity of X-5 resin for Vitamin B12, inulin and cytochrome C was 35.3 mg/g, 1.2 mg/g and 42.9 mg/g respectively in vitro tests. Hemoperfusion with acute renal failure rat model showed good clearance (0.35 +/- 0.25) with X-5 resin for middle molecules.

Abstract: In vitro transformation of suspension cultured single cells of carrot by Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain C58 was reported here. The results indicate that plant cells with intact cell walls can be directly transformed by A. tumefaciens. At 25℃,and at a ratio of 100 bacteria per plant cell, the transformation frequency was about 10 -4 .The transformed cells had the ability to grow in the absence of plant hormones and very easily regenerated into plants, although nopaline was not detected in the tissues and plants from transformed cells.The differences in the growth rate and regeneration ability between tumors induced by A.tumefaciens strain C58 and hairy roots induced by A. rhizogenes strain A4 on carrot disks were compared.

Abstract: A molecular orbital theory for the 3\ensuremath{\alpha} transfer process has been formulated and applied to the $^{16}$O${+\mathrm{}}^{28}$Si scattering case. The \ensuremath{\alpha} transfer mechanism has already been applied successfully in the interpretation of the anomalous large angle scattering between 4N nuclei. It would be worthwhile to test whether the alpha transfer mechanism can also explain the nonstatistical intermediate structure of the excitation function often found in 4N nuclei scattering. The excitation function at 180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} is known to be much more sensitive to the details of the optical potential than are the fits to the angular distribution. Both the experimental data of the excitation function at 180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} in the energy region from 14 to 52 MeV and all thirteen differential cross sections in the energy region 18.67\char21{}34.80 MeV can be fitted well simultaneously with a common set of parameters.

Abstract: A case of severe open fracture of the right elbow in a 21-years-old male patient caused by car accident was reported.The distal humerus and the olecranon were splintered and the elbow was dislocated with a large wound on its dorsal side. Initially, the elbow was immobilized with an external fixateur, being resulted in severe deep infection which was cured by two times of sequestrotomy and skin grafting with the large bony defect and adhesive scar tissues.After healing of the infection, the defected elbow was successfully bridged by the two times of iliac bone grafting, and the patient is satisfied in his daily activities 2 years after the injury.
