TL;DR: Two universal lossy data compression schemes, one with fixed rate and the other with fixed distortion, are presented, based on the well-known Lempel-Ziv algorithm, both of which are universal in the sense that for any stationary, ergodic source or for any individual sequence, the sample distortion performance is given almost surely by the distortion rate function.
Abstract: Two universal lossy data compression schemes, one with fixed rate and the other with fixed distortion, are presented, based on the well-known Lempel-Ziv algorithm. In the case of fixed rate R, the universal lossy data compression scheme works as follows: first pick a codebook B/sub n/ consisting of all reproduction sequences of length n whose Lempel-Ziv codeword length is /spl les/nR, and then use B/sub n/ to encode the entire source sequence n-block by n-block. This fixed-rate data compression scheme is universal in the sense that for any stationary, ergodic source or for any individual sequence, the sample distortion performance as n/spl rarr//spl infin/ is given almost surely by the distortion rate function. A similar result is shown in the context of fixed distortion lossy source coding.

Abstract: on the basis of the Li vacancy model of intrinsic defects in LiNbO3 crystal, the defect structure formed in LiNbO 3 :Mg varying with the Mg content are proposed. The Li 2 O and Nb 2 O 5 contents, the Li/Nb ratio in the crystal, and the density of the crystal are calculated by using the defect structure. The calculated values are in good agreement with the reported experimental results.

TL;DR: Algorithms with pseudopolynomial time complexity are proposed to solve both versions of the stochastic scheduling problem, under which optimal sequences are V-shaped with respect to mean processing times.
Abstract: We examine the problem of scheduling n jobs with a common due date on a single machine. The processing time of each job is a random variable, which follows an arbitrary distribution with a known mean and a known variance. The machine is not reliable; it is subject to stochastic breakdowns. The objective is to minimize the expected sum of squared deviations of job completion times from the due date. Two versions of the problem are addressed. In the first one the due date is a given constant, whereas in the second one the due date is a decision variable. In each case, a general form of the deterministic equivalent of the stochastic scheduling problem is obtained when the counting process related to the machine uptime distribution is a generalized Poisson process. A sufficient condition is derived under which optimal sequences are V-shaped with respect to mean processing times. Other characterizations of optimal solutions are also established. Based on the optimality properties, algorithms with pseudopolynomial time complexity are proposed to solve both versions of the problem. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: It is shown that any sequential code in the class compresses some individual sequence at a rate strictly greater than the rate for that sequence given by the OPTA function.
Abstract: A general class of sequential codes for lossless compression of individual sequences on a finite alphabet is defined, including many types of codes that one would want to implement. The principal requirement for membership in the class is that the encoding and decoding operations be performable on a computer. The OPTA function for the class of codes is then considered, which is the function that assigns to each individual sequence the infimum of the rates at which the sequence can be compressed over this class of sequential codes. Two results about the OPTA function are obtained: (1) it is shown that any sequential code in the class compresses some individual sequence at a rate strictly greater than the rate for that sequence given by the OPTA function; and (2) it is shown that the OPTA function takes a value strictly greater than that of the Kolmogorov (1965) complexity rate function for some individual sequences.

TL;DR: The influence of the counterion X group on the toxicity of organotins was discussed in this article, where it was found that when X is a small easily ionizable group, it has little effect on toxicity; however, when it is a large organic groups, it does change the bioactivity of the organotin.
Abstract: The inhibition by 20 organotin compounds (R n SnX 4-n ), which included some newly synthesized pesticides, of the growth of two green algae (Scenedesmus obliquus and Platymonas sp.) was studied. The influence of the counterion X group on the toxicity of organotins was discussed. The destruction of submicrostructures of the algal cell by organotins was viewed by micrography and electron microscope scanning. It was found that the toxicity of the organotins varied significantly according to their substitution. The order of toxicity is tri- » di- ≥ mono-organotins. Within the same substituent series, the toxicity depends on the properties of both R and X groups. The larger and the more lipophilic the R group, the more toxic is the organotin. The influence of the X group is more complex: when X is a small easily ionizable group, it has little effect on the toxicity; however, when it is a large organic group, it does change the bioactivity of the organotin. Large organic groups may influence the polarizability of the central tin atom, and so change the toxicity of organotins.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that when this version of the gold-washing algorithm is applied to encode a stationary, /spl phi/-mixing source, the expected distortion performance converges to the distortion rate function of the source as the codebook length goes to infinity.
Abstract: For pt.I see ibid., vol.42, no.3, p.803-21 (1996). Two versions of the gold-washing data compression algorithm, one with codebook innovation interval and the other with finitely many codebook innovations, are considered. The version of the gold-washing algorithm with codebook innovation interval k is a variant of the gold-washing algorithm such that the codebook is innovated once every k+1 source words during the process of encoding the entire source. It is demonstrated that when this version of the gold-washing algorithm is applied to encode a stationary, /spl phi/-mixing source, the expected distortion performance converges to the distortion rate function of the source as the codebook length goes to infinity. Furthermore, if the source to be encoded is a Markov source or a finite-state source, then the corresponding sample distortion performance converges almost surely to the distortion rate function. The version of the gold-washing algorithm with finitely many codebook innovations is a variant of the gold-washing algorithm in which after finitely many codebook innovations, the codebook is held fixed and reused to encode the forthcoming source sequence block by block. Similar results are shown for this version of the gold-washing algorithm. In addition, the convergence speed of the algorithm is discussed.

TL;DR: E. coli L-asparaginase was modified with N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan in the presence of normal product L- aspartic acid, which protected the active site of the enzyme.
Abstract: E. coli L-asparaginase was modified with N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan in the presence of normal product L-aspartic acid, which protected the active site of the enzyme. The modified enzyme remained high catalytic activity, showed greater stability against trypsin and alpha-chymotrypsin, but lost its activity more rapidly at high temperature (> 45 degrees C) than did the native enzyme. When tested in vivo, the plasma half-life of the modified enzyme (t1/2 = 40 hr) was over 33 times longer than that of the native enzyme (t1/2 = 1.6 hr). The results showed that the modified L-asparaginase may be much more useful than did the native enzyme for clinical treatments of tumors.

TL;DR: In this paper, the iodide ion sensitivity of a solid-supported bilayer lipid membrane (s-BLM) containing buckminsterfullerene(C60) as an electron mediator has been investigated using the cyclic voltammetry technique.
Abstract: The iodide ion sensitivity of a solid-supported bilayer lipid membrane (s-BLM) containing buckminsterfullerene(C60) as an electron mediator has been investigated using the cyclic voltammetry technique. We have shown that C60 in a lipid bilayer environment produces a unique and simple system for the detection of iodide. The sensitivity of C60-containing s-BLM to I− is excellent with a linear response in the range from 10−8 to 10−2 M. The use of fullerene C60-doped s-BLMs as sensors and devices for detecting other species is proposed.
