TL;DR: Three heuristic algorithms and a branch and bound algorithm are proposed to minimise total completion time of jobs and the problem is proved to be NP-hard in the strong sense.
Abstract: This paper considers a single machine scheduling problem with preventive maintenance. In many cases, a machine must be maintained after it continuously works for a period of time. But most papers in the literature ignore non-availability of the machine. For this reason, this paper studies the problem of scheduling processing of jobs and maintenance of machine simultaneously. The objective is to minimise total completion time of jobs. The problem is proved to be NP-hard in the strong sense. Three heuristic algorithms and a branch and bound algorithm are proposed. Computational experiments are done to evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithms.

TL;DR: In this article, a series of chitosan-gelatin complexes were prepared by varying the ratio of constituents and differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the amount of different states of water.
Abstract: A series of chitosan–gelatin complexes was prepared by varying the ratio of constituents. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the amount of the different states of water. The interaction between chitosan and gelatin was checked by IR and X-ray analysis and was related to mechanical strength. The results indicate that the water take-up of a chitosan–gelatin complex is depressed by strong interactions within networks. Chitosan can improve the tensile strength of complex films, and even with high water content these can keep appropriate tensile strength and higher elongation. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry

TL;DR: The zero-error capacity region and the maximum total number of information hits stored in the memory for T consecutive cycles for the situation where the encoder knows and the decoder does not know the previous state of the memory are determined.
Abstract: The generalized write-once memory introduced by Fiat and Shamir (1984) is a q-ary information storage medium. Each storage cell is expected to store one of q symbols, and the legal state transitions are described by an arbitrary directed acyclic graph. This memory model can be understood as a generalization of the binary write-once memory which was introduced by Rivest and Shamir (1982). During the process of updating information, the contents of a cell can be changed from a 0-state to a 1-state but not vice versa. We study the problem of reusing a generalized write-once memory for T successive cycles (generations). We determine the zero-error capacity region and the maximum total number of information hits stored in the memory for T consecutive cycles for the situation where the encoder knows and the decoder does not know the previous state of the memory. These results extend the results of Wolf, Wyner, Ziv, and Korner (1984) for the binary write-once memory.

TL;DR: The results obtained indicate that L-Trp-beta-CD can recognize not only size/shape and hydrophobicity but also the enantiomeric and geometrical isomers of the guest alcohols, showing a 230-fold molecular selectivity for 2-adamantanol over cyclopentanol among the cyclic alcohols examined.
Abstract: l-Tryptophan-modified β-cyclodextrin (l-Trp-β-CD) has been synthesized and its molecular recognition behavior investigated through fluorescence and circular dichroism spectrometry, as well as fluorescence lifetime measurement in the presence and absence of various alcohols as guest molecules. Employing the indolyl group as a spectral probe, spectrofluorometric and spectropolarimetric titrations have been performed in aqueous phosphate buffer solution at pH 7.20 to calculate the complex stability constants for 1:1 inclusion complexation of l-Trp-β-CD with several series of alcohols at 25 °C. The results obtained indicate that l-Trp-β-CD can recognize not only size/shape and hydrophobicity but also the enantiomeric and geometrical isomers of the guest alcohols, showing a 230-fold molecular selectivity (13.5 kJ mol-1) for 2-adamantanol over cyclopentanol among the cyclic alcohols examined. Moderate enantiomeric selectivities of 1.2 and 1.9 for (−)-isomers of borneol and menthol, respectively, and geometrical...

TL;DR: In this article, a hydrotalcite-like compound of formula Ni0.8Al0.2(OH)2(CO3)0.1.0.66H2O was used as positive electrode material in rechargeable alkaline batteries.
Abstract: Substitution of 20 aluminium for nickel in the lattice of nickel hydroxide, prepared by coprecipitation, leads to a hydrotalcite-like compound of formula Ni0.8Al0.2(OH)2(CO3)0.1.0.66H2O. It has been found that the compound has prolonged stability in 6m KOH solution and can be used as the positive electrode material in rechargeable alkaline batteries. The structure, morphology and composition of the compound have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The electrode comprising the aluminium-substituted nickel hydroxide has greater discharge capacity and higher utilization of active material than the β-Ni(OH)2 electrode. Cyclic voltammetry suggest that the aluminium-substituted nickel hydroxide has better reversibility of the Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox couple and higher oxygen evolution overpotential than β-Ni(OH)2. The mechanism of the electrode reaction has also been discussed and the proton diffusion coefficient in the compound has been determined.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provided a method to obtain the quark mass parametrizations and gave a self-consistent thermodynamic treatment which includes the MIT bag model as an extreme.
Abstract: The previous treatments for strange quark matter in the quark mass-density-dependent model have unreasonable vacuum limits. We provide a method to obtain the quark mass parametrizations and give a self-consistent thermodynamic treatment which includes the MIT bag model as an extreme. In this treatment, strange quark matter in bulk still has the possibility of absolute stability. However, the behavior of the sound velocity is opposite to previous findings.

TL;DR: In this paper, the absorption spectra of congruent pure and nearly stoichiometric lithium niobate crystals have been investigated, and the absorption peaks were considered to relate to the stretching vibration of protons located at 336 pm O-O bonds in oxygen triangles nearest to the Li site.
Abstract: The absorption spectra of congruent pure and nearly stoichiometric lithium niobate crystals have been investigated. Experimental results show that each absorption band consists of three components. The absorption peaks were considered to relate to the stretching vibration of protons located at 336 pm O-O bonds in oxygen triangles nearest to the Li site. The absorption peak corresponds to protons directly substituting for ions; the 3481 and peaks are suggested to be associated with protons occupying intrinsic defects near and two different ion environments cause these two absorption peaks.

Abstract: The novel o-phenylenediseleno bridged bis(cyclodextrin)s and its complexes with platinum(IV) and palladium(II) ions have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, 1H NMR, infrared, and thermal analysis. Fluorescence spectro-photometric titrations have been performed in aqueous buffer solution (pH 7.20) at 25.0°C to give the complex stability constants (Ks ) and Gibbs free energy change (-ΔG°) for the 1:1 inclusion complexation of natural β-cyclodextrin, the o-phenylenediseleno bridged bis(cyclodextrin)s 1 and its platinum(IV) complex 2 with 8-Anilino-1-naphtha-lenesulfonic Acid Ammonium Salt (ANS ammonium). The molecular inclusion ability of ANS ammonium by the three host compounds are discussed from the viewpoints of size/shape-fit concept and the multipoint recognition mechanism.

Abstract: Reactions of diethyl phosphite with Vilsmeier reagents, RCONR1R2/POCl3, afforded various alkylaminosubstitutedmethylenediphosphonates in acceptable yields, which (R = H) were then reacted with aldehydes under the conditions of the Wittig–Horner reaction to furnish vinylphosphonates, and which (R = H) underwent alkylation with alkyl halides to give alkylaminosubstitutedmethylenediposphonates 8. TL;DR: A novel cyclodextrin derivative, mono[6-(p-methoxyphenylseleno)-6-deoxy]-beta-cyclodesxtrin (2), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and mass, FT-IR, and (1)H NMR spectroscopy.
Abstract: A novel cyclodextrin derivative, mono[6-(p-methoxyphenylseleno)-6-deoxy]-beta-cyclodextrin (2), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and mass, FT-IR, and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The stability constants (K(S)) of the inclusion complexation of 2 and mono[6-(p-tolylseleno)-6-deoxy]-beta-cyclodextrin (3) with a series acyclic and cyclic alcohols have been determined in phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.20) at 25 degrees C by using the circular dichroism spectral titration method. Although the stability constants obtained for the inclusion complexation of 2 and 3 with aliphatic alcohols are generally smaller than those for native beta-cyclodextrin, the modified cyclodextrins can recognize both the size and chirality of the guest molecules. Interestingly, the complex stability constants (log K(S)), or the Gibbs free energy change (-DeltaG degrees ), increase linearly with increasing number of carbon atoms in the guest molecule (N(C)), irrespective of the topological differences of acyclic, cyclic, and bicyclic guests. The unit increment of complex stability per methylene (-dDeltaG degrees /dN(C)) is not appreciably affected by the difference of the host's substituent but is a critical function of the guest topology, affording distinctly different -dDeltaG degrees /dN(C) values of 2.4 and 2.9 kJ mol(-)(1) for alkanols and cycloalkanols, respectively. In the complexation of chiral guests with 2 and 3, the observed enantioselectivities, as measured by the stability difference (DeltaDeltaG degrees ), are mostly in the range of 1-2 kJ mol(-)(1).

TL;DR: The parthenogenetic populations from inland salt lakes could follow an evolutionary path that is different from that of the coastalparthenogenetics populations.
Abstract: Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) markers were successfully employed to analyze 15Artemia species and strains for genetic diversity. AFLP markers are extremely sensitive to even a small sequence variation. They are stable and more polymorphic than RAPD. Twelve pairs of primer combinations were used to detect AFLP bands, of which 384 were polymorphic, and DNA fingerprintings were obtained by using silver staining. The polymorphism analysis leads us to the following conclusions: 1.Artemia tibetiana seems to differentiate fromA. sinica. 2. The parthenogenetic populations from inland salt lakes could follow an evolutionary path that is different from that of the coastal parthenogenetic populations.

TL;DR: In this article, the results of preliminary bioassays showed that these heterocycles obtained via cyclization reactions of LR possess significant selective herbicidal activity and the QSAR of 3 was also made.
Abstract: 2,4-Bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,2,4-dithiaphosphetane-2,4-disulfide (Lawesson's reagent, LR) reacted with certain bifunctional compounds, such as glycinamides 1, 1-glyceryl monoesters 4, and 3-mercapto-4-amino-5-substituted-1,2,4-triazoles 6, to yield five-membered phosphorus heterocycles 3,5, and 7, respectively. The cycloaddition reaction of LR with 1,3-butadiene 8 was investigated to form the six-membered heterocycle 9. The results of preliminary bioassays showed that these heterocycles obtained via cyclization reactions of LR possess significant selective herbicidal activity. The QSAR of 3 was also made. In conclusion, the cyclization reactions of LR with bifunctional substrates and 1,3-dienes afford novel routes to the syntheses of biologically active phosphorus heterocycles. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. TL;DR: In this article, the authors showed that the injectivity radius of a simply connected n-manifold with vanishing second Betti number admits a metric of sectional curvature.
Abstract: Our main theorem asserts that for all odd $ n \ge 3 $ and 0 < $ \delta \le 1 $ , there exists a small constant, $ i(n,\delta) > 0 $ , such that if a simply connected n-manifold, M, with vanishing second Betti number admits a metric of sectional curvature, $ \delta \le K_M \le 1 $ , then the injectivity radius of M is greater than $ i(n,\delta) $ .
