TL;DR: In this paper, size-controlled and coated magnetite nanoparticles with glucose and gluconic acid have been successfully synthesized via a simple and facile hydrothermal reduction route using a single iron precursor, FeCl3, and a combination of the inherent chemical reduction capability of sucrose decomposition products and their inorganic coordinating ability.
Abstract: Size-controlled and coated magnetite nanoparticles with glucose and gluconic acid have been successfully synthesized via a simple and facile hydrothermal reduction route using a single iron precursor, FeCl3, and a combination of the inherent chemical reduction capability of sucrose decomposition products and their inorganic coordinating ability. The particle size can be easily controlled in the range of 4−16 nm. Results obtained with and without the addition of sucrose indicate that sucrose is required for the formation of nanoscale and coated magnetite instead of the much larger hematite. Mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetry analysis were used to investigate the formation mechanism of the coated nanomagnetite from the single Fe(III) precursor in sucrose. Sucrose acts as a bifunctional agent: (i) it decomposes into reducing species, causing partial reduction of the Fe3+ ions to Fe2+ ions as required for the formation of Fe3O4 an...

TL;DR: A fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) inhibition assay for α-fetoprotein (AFP) excreted during cancer cell growth using water-soluble functionalized PLNPs based on Eu2+- and Dy3+-doped Ca1.
Abstract: Persistent-luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs) are promising as a new generation of photoluminescent probes for detection of biomolecules and bioimaging. Here we report a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) inhibition assay for α-fetoprotein (AFP) excreted during cancer cell growth using water-soluble functionalized PLNPs based on Eu2+- and Dy3+-doped Ca1.86Mg0.14ZnSi2O7. Polyethyleneimine-coated PLNPs were conjugated with AFP-antibody-coated gold nanoparticles as a sensitive and specific persistent photoluminescence probe for detection of AFP in serum samples and imaging of AFP excreted during cancer cell growth. Such PLNPs do not contain toxic heavy metals. Their long-lasting afterglow nature allows detection and imaging without external illumination, thereby eliminating the autofluorescence and scattering light from biological matrixes encountered under in situ excitation.

TL;DR: In this article, a scalar field equation involving a fractional Laplacian was studied and a positive ground state was obtained under the general Berestycki-Lions type assumptions.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the following scalar field equation involving a fractional Laplacian: where N ≥ 2, α ∈ (0, 1), (−Δ)α stands for the fractional Laplacian. Using some minimax arguments, we obtain a positive ground state under the general Berestycki–Lions type assumptions.
