TL;DR: Recent work on the recognition and assembly properties unique to p-Sulfonatocalix[n]arenes and their potential biological applications is summarized, by this group and by other laboratories.
Abstract: ConspectusDevelopments in macrocyclic chemistry have led to supramolecular chemistry, a field that has attracted increasing attention among researchers in various disciplines. Notably, the discoveries of new types of macrocyclic hosts have served as important milestones in the field. Researchers have explored the supramolecular chemistry of several classical macrocyclic hosts, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, and cucurbiturils. Calixarenes represent a third generation of supramolecular hosts after cyclodextrins and crown ethers. Easily modified, these macrocycles show great potential as simple scaffolds to build podand-like receptors. However, the inclusion properties of the cavities of unmodified calixarenes are not as good as those of other common macrocycles. Calixarenes require extensive chemical modifications to achieve efficient endo-complexation.p-Sulfonatocalix[n]arenes (SCnAs, n = 4–8) are a family of water-soluble calixarene derivatives that in aqueous media bind to guest mole...

TL;DR: In this article, a 3D hierarchical porous α-Fe2O3 nanosheets are fabricated on copper foil and directly used as binder-free anode for lithium-ion batteries.
Abstract: To develop a long cycle life and good rate capability electrode, 3D hierarchical porous α-Fe2O3 nanosheets are fabricated on copper foil and directly used as binder-free anode for lithium-ion batteries. This electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity and excellent rate capability. A reversible capacity up to 877.7 mAh g−1 is maintained at 2 C (2.01 A g−1) after 1000 cycles, and even when the current is increased to 20 C (20.1 A g−1), a capacity of 433 mA h g−1 is retained. The unique porous 3D hierarchical nanostructure improves electronic–ionic transport, mitigates the internal mechanical stress induced by the volume variations of the electrode upon cycling, and forms a 3D conductive network during cycling. No addition of any electrochemically inactive conductive agents or polymer binders is required. Therefore, binder-free electrodes further avoid the uneven distribution of conductive carbon on the current collector due to physical mixing and the addition of an insulator (binder), which has benefits leading to outstanding electrochemical performance.

TL;DR: Electrochemical investigations reveal that the authors generally attain larger capacities and improved kinetics for electrode materials as their average particle size decreases, and shifting from bulk to nanostructured electrode materials could offer a revolutionary opportunity to develop advanced green batteries with large capacity, high energy and power density, and long cycle life.
Abstract: In a society that increasingly relies on mobile electronics, demand is rapidly growing for both primary and rechargeable batteries that power devices from cell phones to vehicles. Existing batteries utilize lightweight active materials that use electrochemical reactions of ions such as H+, OH− and Li+/Mg2+ to facilitate energy storage and conversion. Ideal batteries should be inexpensive, have high energy density, and be made from environmentally friendly materials; batteries based on bulk active materials do not meet these requirements. Because of slow electrode process kinetics and low-rate ionic diffusion/migration, most conventional batteries demonstrate huge gaps between their theoretical and practical performance. Therefore, efforts are underway to improve existing battery technologies and develop new electrode reactions for the next generation of electrochemical devices. Advances in electrochemistry, surface science, and materials chemistry are leading to the use of nanomaterials for efficient ener...
