TL;DR: In this article, an analysis of the stress intensity factor for a crack approaching the welding line from the normal direction in an infinite plate is presented. But the analysis is limited to the case of a single rod.

TL;DR: In this article, a method of producing a functionally gradient material whose components and structure are continuously adjusted by the coating, plating and powder metallurgy techniques to change its function in turn is presented.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of producing a functionally gradient material whose components and structure are continuously adjusted by the coating, plating and powder metallurgy techniques to change its function in turn and provides a method of producing a functionally gradient material superior in heat-resistance, corrosion-reistance and resistance to thermal fatigue by distributing a third component having a lower Young's modulus or formed of high-strength material sufficiently durable to the fracture strength among ceramics as a first component and metals or other ceramics as a second component to change the function.

TL;DR: In this paper, the conceptual studies of closed ecological life support systems (CELSS) carried out at NAL in Japan for a water recycle system using membranes are reviewed.
Abstract: Conceptual studies of closed ecological life support systems (CELSS) carried out at NAL in Japan for a water recycle system using membranes are reviewed. The system will treat water from shower room, urine, impure condensation from gas recycle system, and so on. The H2O recycle system is composed of prefilter, ultrafiltration membrane, reverse osmosis membrane, and distillator. Some results are shown for a bullet train of toilet-flushing water recycle equipment with an ultraviltration membrane module. The constant value of the permeation rate with a 4.7 square meters of module is about 70 1/h after 500th of operation. Thermovaporization with porous polytetrafluorocarbon membrane is also proposed to replce the distillator.

TL;DR: In this paper, agricultural and other experiments relating to the development of a controlled ecological life support system (CELSS) were proposed and the engineering feasibility of each proposal was investigated by a CELSS experiment concept met study group.
Abstract: Agricultural and other experiments relating to the development of a controlled ecological life support system (CELSS) were proposed. The engineering feasibility of each proposal was investigated by a CELSS experiment concept met study group. The CELSS experiment concept to clarify the goals of CELSS and to determine three phases to achieve the goals. The resulting phases, or missions, and preliminary proposals and studies needed to develop a CELSS are described.
