Abstract: The O-antigen polysaccharide of the lipopolysaccharide from the enteroaggregative Escherichia coli strain 62D1 has been determined. Sugar and methylation analysis together with 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy revealed the components of the repeating unit. Two-dimensional NOESY and heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation experiments were used to deduce the sequence. 1H and 13C NMR spectra indicate heterogeneity in the polysaccharide. Methylation analysis and 1H NMR spectra of native and Smith-degraded material show that the majority (65%) of the repeating units has the following structure: Minor resonances in the NMR spectra are consistent with the presence of repeating units which lack the α-d-Galp terminal residue (35%).

Abstract: Geophysical and hydrochemical surveys were used to investigate the hydrogeological conditions in one of the Rio Sucio microbasins, in central Nicaragua. Zones of vertical structures (i.e. fractures and quartz veins) and weathering were mapped using Continuous Vertical Electrical Soundings (CVES), as such zones are of major importance for groundwater transport. Water from the springs was analysed to determine concentrations of major ions and heavy metals. Low ion concentrations and 18O analyses indicate that the springs occur close to their recharge areas and there is a relatively rapid groundwater circulation. Mercury (Hg) content in the springs was low, while comparatively high amounts of lead (Pb) were found. The results presented here demonstrate the important function of weathering and tectonics in the occurrence of groundwater systems in the basin. Hg and Pb found in the springs’ water reveal the existence of an increase in pollution sources disseminating in the area. More than 100 years of using mercury in the gold-mining industry and releasing wastes into rivers has affected water quality and ecosystems. Further investigations are needed in this area to determine the groundwater vulnerability to this pollution as this resource may be needed in the future.

Abstract: The water balance dynamics and runoff components of a tropical forested catchment (46 km2) on the southwestern Pacific coast of Nicaragua were studied combining hydrometry, geological characterization and hydrochemical and isotopic tracers (three-component hydrograph separation). The climatic water balance was estimated for 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13 with net values of 811 mm year-1, 782 mm year-1 and –447 mm year-1, respectively. Runoff components were studied at different spatial and temporal scales, demonstrating that different sources and temporal contributions are controlled by dominant landscape elements and antecedent rainfall. In forested sub-catchments, permeable soils, stratigraphy and steep slopes favour subsurface stormflow generation contributing 50% and 53% to total discharge. At catchment scale, landscape elements such as smooth slopes, wide valleys, deeper soils and water table allow groundwater recharge during rainfall events.
