Abstract: Exotic features of a metal/oxide/metal sandwich, which will be the basis for a drastically innovative nonvolatile memory device, is brought to light from a physical point of view. Here the insulator is one of the ubiquitous and classic binary-transition-metal oxides (TMO), such as ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, $\mathrm{NiO}$, and $\mathrm{CoO}$. The sandwich exhibits a resistance that reversibly switches between two states: one is a highly resistive off state and the other is a conductive on state. Several distinct features were universally observed in these binary TMO sandwiches: namely, nonpolar switching, nonvolatile threshold switching, and current-voltage duality. From the systematic sample-size dependence of the resistance in on and off states, we conclude that the resistance switching is due to the formation of ``electric faucet'' at the interface, which shows up as a homogeneous to inhomogeneous transition of the current distribution.

Abstract: An extremely simple, power-free pumping method for poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic devices is presented. By exploiting the high gas solubility of PDMS, the energy for the pumping is pre-stored in the degassed bulk PDMS, therefore no additional structures other than channels and reservoirs are required. In a Y-shaped microchannel with cross section of 100 µm width × 25 µm height, this method has provided flow rate of 0.5–2 nL s−1, corresponding to linear velocity of 0.2–0.8 mm s−1, with good reproducibility. As an application of the power-free pumping, gold nanoparticle-based DNA analysis, which does not rely on the cross-linking mechanism between nanoparticles, has been implemented in a microchannel with three inlets. Target 15mer DNA has been easily and unambiguously discriminated from its single-base substituted mutant. Instead of colorimetric detection in a conventional microtube, an alternative detection technique suitable for microdevices has been discovered—observation of deposition on the PDMS surfaces. The channel layout enabled two simultaneous DNA analyses at the two interfaces between the three laminar streams.

Abstract: SUMMARY We present a tectonic interpretation of the breakup and early seafloor spreading between India and Antarctica based on improved coverage of potential field and seismic data off the east Antarctic margin between the Gunnerus Ridge and the Bruce Rise. We have identified a series of ENE trending Mesozoic magnetic anomalies from chron M9o (∼130.2 Ma) to M2o (∼124.1 Ma) in the Enderby Basin, and M9o to M4o (∼126.7 Ma) in the Princess Elizabeth Trough and Davis Sea Basin, indicating that India–Antarctica and India–Australia breakups were roughly contemporaneous. We present evidence for an abandoned spreading centre south of the Elan Bank microcontinent; the estimated timing of its extinction corresponds to the early surface expression of the Kerguelen Plume at the Southern Kerguelen Plateau around 120 Ma. We observe an increase in spreading rate from west to east, between chron M9 and M4 (38–54 mm yr–1), along the Antarctic margin and suggest the tectono-magmatic segmentation of oceanic crust has been influenced by inherited crustal structure, the kinematics of Gondwanaland breakup and the proximity to the Kerguelen hotspot. A high-amplitude, E–W oriented magnetic lineation named the Mac Robertson Coast Anomaly (MCA), coinciding with a landwards step-down in basement observed in seismic reflection data, is tentatively interpreted as the boundary between continental/transitional zone and oceanic crust. The exposure of lower crustal rocks along the coast suggests that this margin formed in a metamorphic core complex extension mode with a high strength ratio between upper and lower crust, which typically occurs above anomalously hot mantle. Together with the existence of the MCA zone this observation suggests that a mantle temperature anomaly predated the early surface outpouring/steady state magmatic production of the Kerguelen LIP. An alternative model suggests that the northward ridge jump was limited to the Elan Bank region, whereas seafloor spreading continued in the West Enderby Basin and its Sri Lankan conjugate margin. In this case, the MCA magnetic anomaly could be interpreted as the southern arm of a ridge propagator that stopped around 120 Ma.

Abstract: The fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method was combined with the second order Moller–Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory. The accuracy of the method using the 6-31G* basis set was tested on (H2O)n, n=16,32,64; α-helices and β-strands of alanine n-mers, n=10,20,40; as well as on (H2O)n, n=16,32,64 using the 6-31++G** basis set. Relative to the regular MP2 results that could be afforded, the FMO2-MP2 error in the correlation energy did not exceed 0.003 a.u., the error in the correlation energy gradient did not exceed 0.000 05 a.u./bohr and the error in the correlation contribution to dipole moment did not exceed 0.03 debye. An approximation reducing computational load based on fragment separation was introduced and tested. The FMO2-MP2 method demonstrated nearly linear scaling and drastically reduced the memory requirements of the regular MP2, making possible calculations with several thousands basis functions using small Pentium clusters.
