TL;DR: Investigating the effectiveness of autologous culture‐expanded bone marrow mesenchymal cell transplantation for repairing articular cartilage defects found it may be an effective approach to promote the repair of articularcartilage defects.
Abstract: To investigate the effectiveness of autologous culture-expanded bone marrow mesenchymal cell transplantation for repairing articular cartilage defects, we transplanted autologous culture-expanded bone marrow mesenchymal cells into nine full-thickness articular cartilage defects of the patello-femoral joints (including two kissing lesions) in the knees of three patients, a 31 year-old female, a 44 year-old male and a 45 year-old male. Three weeks before transplantation, bone marrow blood was aspirated from the iliac crest. Adherent cells were cultured with media containing autologous serum. Single-passaged cells were collected, embedded in a collagen solution (5 x 10(6) cells/ml), placed on a collagen sheet, gelated, transplanted into the defect and covered with autologous periosteum or synovium. Six months after transplantation, the patients' clinical symptoms had improved and the improvements have been maintained over the follow-up periods (17-27 months). Histology of the first patient 12 months after the transplantation revealed that the defect had been repaired with the fibrocartilaginous tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging of the second patient 1 year after transplantation revealed complete coverage of the defect, but we were unable to determine whether or not the material that covered the defects was hyaline cartilage. Autologous bone marrow mesenchymal cells transplantation may be an effective approach to promote the repair of articular cartilage defects.

TL;DR: The high efficiency of water-assisted CVD enabled the synthesis of nearly catalyst-free DWNT forests with a carbon purity of 99.95%, which could be templated into organized structures from lithographically patterned catalyst islands.
Abstract: We have succeeded in synthesizing vertically aligned doubled-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) forests with heights of up to 2.2 mm by water-assisted chemical vapour deposition (CVD). We achieved 85% selectivity of DWNTs through a semi-empirical analysis of the relationships between the tube type and mean diameter and between the mean diameter and the film thickness of sputtered Fe, which was used here as a catalyst. Accordingly, catalysts were engineered for optimum DWNT selectivity by precisely controlling the Fe film thickness. The high efficiency of water-assisted CVD enabled the synthesis of nearly catalyst-free DWNT forests with a carbon purity of 99.95%, which could be templated into organized structures from lithographically patterned catalyst islands.

TL;DR: Phylogenetic analyses of partial sequences of gyrB and recA are consistent with previous analyses limited to 16S rRNA gene sequences and yield improved confidence of the evolutionary relationships of these symbionts.
Abstract: Ecological studies on three bacterial lineages symbiotic in aphids have shown that they impose a variety of effects on their hosts, including resistance to parasitoids and tolerance to heat stress. Phylogenetic analyses of partial sequences of gyrB and recA are consistent with previous analyses limited to 16S rRNA gene sequences and yield improved confidence of the evolutionary relationships of these symbionts. All three symbionts are in the Enterobacteriaceae. One of the symbionts, here given the provisional designation “Candidatus Serratia symbiotica,” is a Serratia species that has acquired a symbiotic lifestyle. The other two symbionts, here designated “Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa” and “Candidatus Regiella insecticola,” are sister groups to one another and together show a relationship to species of Photorhabdus.

TL;DR: Genome and transcriptome sequencing reveals that the extreme genomic degeneracy of Tremblaya PCIT likely resulted from acquiring Moranella as an endosymbiont, and indicates that the functioning of this three-way symbiosis is dependent on genes from at least six lineages of organisms.
