TL;DR: Analysis indicates that C SA based PID controller provides better response compare to GA, PSO and FA based PI/PID controller and CSA based PI controller.
Abstract: Large integration of renewable energy in hybrid power system in isolated mode of operation make frequency control a challenging task. This paper investigates the performance of Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA) and Firefly Algorithm (FA) based frequency control strategy of such a hybrid power system, which is a unique work. The generating units of the system are plug in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), wind turbine generators, a diesel engine generator (DEG) and battery energy storage system (BESS). The proportional plus integral (PI)/proportional integral derivative (PID) controllers are employed with PHEV, DEG and BESS to adjust the total active power generation in accordance to the load demand. Addition of PHEV reduces the reliance on the DEG or BESS as a result of variability and uncertainty of wind power. Different disturbance conditions such as step perturbations, random variations of load as well as wind output power, have been considered in the case studies under Matlab simulation to assess the performance of CSA and FA based control strategy. Analysis indicates that CSA based PID controller provides better response compare to GA, PSO and FA based PI/PID controller and CSA based PI controller. Sensitivity analysis has been carried out to check the robustness of FA and CSA optimized PI/PID controller gains.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the state-of-the-art communication technologies that can meet the communication requirements of the smart grid CPS (SG-CPS) applications.
Abstract: The recent developments in embedded system design and communication technologies popularized the adaption of the cyber-physical system (CPS) for practical applications. A CPS is an amalgamation of a physical system, a cyber system, and their communication network. The cyber system performs extensive computational operations on the data received from the physical devices, interprets the data, and initiates effective control actions in real-time. One such CPS is the smart grid CPS (SG-CPS) consisting of physical devices with diverse communication requirements, and intermediate communication networks. Thus, reliable communication networks are paramount for the effective operation of the SG-CPS. This paper is an elaborate survey on the communication networks from the perspective of the SG-CPS. This paper presents the state-of-art communication technologies that can meet the communication requirements of the various SG-CPS applications. The communications standards and communication protocols are also comprehensively discussed. A systematic mapping among communication technologies, standards, and protocols for various SG-CPS applications has been presented based on an extensive literature survey in this paper. Furthermore, several challenges, such as security, safety, reliability and resilience, etc., have been addressed from SG-CPS’s perspective. This work also identifies the research gaps in the various domains of the SG-CPS that can be of immense benefit to the research community.

TL;DR: The combined method of feature extraction (Spatial and Frequency) shows superior performance than individual feature extraction schemes and gives good recognition results even without pre-processing of the image.
Abstract: Quality of image plays a vital role in increasing face recognition rate. A good quality image gives better recognition rate than noisy images. It is more difficult to extract features from such noisy images which in-turn reduces face recognition rate. To overcome problems occurred due to low quality image, pre-processing is done before extracting features from the image. In this paper we will analyze the effect of pre-processing prior to feature extraction process with respect to the face recognition rate. This also gives a qualitative description of various pre-processing techniques and feature extraction schemes that were used for our analysis. The results were analyzed with the help of bar graphs. The combined method of feature extraction (Spatial and Frequency) shows superior performance than individual feature extraction schemes. Also, this combined method gives good recognition results even without pre-processing of the image.
