Abstract: Different atmospheric correction (AC) procedures for Sentinel-2 satellites are evaluated for their effectiveness in retrieving consistent satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) over two islands in the Caribbean (Buck and Culebra). The log-ratio method for SDB, which allows use of minimal calibration information from lidar surveys (25 points in this study), is applied to several Sentinel-2A/B scenes at 10 m spatial resolution. The overall performance during a one-year study period depends on the image quality and AC. Three AC processors were evaluated: ACOLITE Exponential model (EXP), ACOLITE Dark Spectrum Fitting model (DSF), and C2RCC model. ACOLITE EXP and ACOLITE DSF produce greater consistency and repeatability with accurate results in a scene-by-scene analysis (mean errors ∼1.1 m) for depths up to 23 m (limit of lidar surveys). In contrast, C2RCC produces lower accuracy and noisier results with generally higher (>50%) errors (mean errors ∼2.2 m), but it is able to retrieve depth for scenes in Buck Island that have moderately severe sunglint. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a multi-temporal compositing model for SDB mapping, using ACOLITE for the input scenes, could achieve overall median errors <1 m for depths ranging 0-23 m. The simple and effective compositing model can considerably enhance coastal SDB estimates with high reliability and no missing data, outperforming the traditional single image approaches and thus eliminating the need to evaluate individual scenes. Abstract: Monte Carlo simulation techniques have been applied to underwater light propagation to calculate the magnitudes of propagation-induced depth measurement bias errors as well as spatial beam spreading and signal attenuation for airborne laser hydrography. The bias errors are caused by the spatial and subsequent temporal dispersion of the laser beam by particulate scattering as it twice traverses the water column. Beam spreading results dictate spatial resolution at the bottom and the receiver field-of-view requirement. Sample temporal response functions are presented. The peak power attenuation relationships developed can be used to predict maxim um penetration depths, Predicted depth measurem ent biases are reported as functions of scanner nadir angle, physical and optical depths, scattering phase function, single-scattering albedo, and receiver field of view for several diverse signal processing and pulse location algorithms. Bias variations as a function of unknown in the field) water optical parameters are seen to be minimized for limited ranges of nadir angles whose values depend on the processing protocol. Bias correctors for use on field data are reported as functions of nadir angle and depth.

Abstract: Amphipods of Diporeia spp. have declined considerably during the last decade in the Great Lakes. We examined the possibility that disease may be affecting these populations. A histo- logical survey assessed the parasites in species of Diporeia within Lakes Huron and Michigan, USA, and the host response to some of them and to unknown factors. Amphipods were found to have an intranuclear inclusion body, and were hosts to a rickettsia-like organism, fungi, a haplosporidian, a microsporidian, epibiotic ciliates, a gregarine, a cestode, acanthocephalans and nodule formations. Epibiotic ciliates were most common (37% prevalence of infection), but a microsporidian (3.8%), a rickettsia-like organism (1.6%), fungi, including a yeast-like organism (1.3%), worms (1.3%), and a haplosporidian (0.7%) are likely associated with mortalities or detrimental effects on the host. The role these agents may have played in the decline of Diporeia spp. in the Great Lakes over the last decade is not clear. Interrelationships with the dynamics of various physical and biological factors such as high sedimentation, diminished food supplies, and virulent parasites could synergistically cause the decline in Diporeia spp. populations in Lakes Michigan and Huron.
