Abstract: This paper constructs a DSGE model for an economy with commodity exports. We estimate the model using Russian data, making a special focus on quantitative effects of commodity price dynamics. There is a widespread belief that economic activity in Russia crucially depends on oil prices, but quantitative estimates are scarce. We estimate an oil price effect on the Russian economy in a general equilibrium framework. Our setup is similar to those of Kollmann (2001) and Dam and Linaa (2005), but we extend their models by explicitly accounting for oil revenues. In addition to standard supply, demand, cost–push, and monetary policy shocks, we include the shock of commodity export revenues. The main objective of the paper is to identify the contribution of structural shocks to business cycle fluctuations in the Russian economy. We found that despite a strong impact on GDP from commodity export shocks, business cycles in Russia are mostly domestically based.

Abstract: Nucleosomes are elementary building blocks of chromatin in eukaryotes. They tightly wrap ∼147 DNA base pairs around an octamer of histone proteins. How nucleosome structural dynamics affect genome functioning is not completely clear. Here we report all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of nucleosome core particles at a timescale of 15 microseconds. At this timescale, functional modes of nucleosome dynamics such as spontaneous nucleosomal DNA breathing, unwrapping, twisting, and sliding were observed. We identified atomistic mechanisms of these processes by analyzing the accompanying structural rearrangements of the histone octamer and histone-DNA contacts. Octamer dynamics and plasticity were found to enable DNA unwrapping and sliding. Through multi-scale modeling, we showed that nucleosomal DNA dynamics contribute to significant conformational variability of the chromatin fiber at the supranucleosomal level. Our study further supports mechanistic coupling between fine details of histone dynamics and chromatin functioning, provides a framework for understanding the effects of various chromatin modifications.

Abstract: We study the derived categories of coherent sheaves on Gushel–Mukai varieties. In the derived category of such a variety, we isolate a special semiorthogonal component, which is a K3 or Enriques category according to whether the dimension of the variety is even or odd. We analyze the basic properties of this category using Hochschild homology, Hochschild cohomology, and the Grothendieck group. We study the K3 category of a Gushel–Mukai fourfold in more detail. Namely, we show this category is equivalent to the derived category of a K3 surface for a certain codimension 1 family of rational Gushel–Mukai fourfolds, and to the K3 category of a birational cubic fourfold for a certain codimension 3 family. The first of these results verifies a special case of a duality conjecture which we formulate. We discuss our results in the context of the rationality problem for Gushel–Mukai varieties, which was one of the main motivations for this work.
