Abstract: We demonstrate intracavity plasmonic laser spectroscopy using a plasmonic laser created from a periodically perforated silver film with a liquid gain medium. An active zone of the laser is formed by a highly elongated spot of pumping. This results in a significantly more efficient diffusive mixing of dye molecules, which suppresses the effect of their bleaching, and in the ability to reduce the volume of the gain medium to as little as 400 nl. We use this design for a stable plasmonic laser in multiple measurements and demonstrate that it is highly effective as a spaser spectroscopy sensor for intracavity detection of an absorptive dye at 0.07 ppm. This work provides an opportunity to develop applications of intracavity plasmonic laser spectroscopy in biological label detection and other fields.

Abstract: The ratio of branching fractions of the decays $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → pK−e+e− and $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → pK−μ+μ−, $$ {R}_{pK}^{-1} $$ , is measured for the first time using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1 recorded with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. In the dilepton mass-squared range 0.1 < q2 < 6.0 GeV2/c4 and the pK− mass range m(pK−) < 2600 MeV/c2, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be $$ {R}_{pK}^{-1}={1.17}_{-0.16}^{+0.18}\pm 0.07 $$ , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first test of lepton universality with b baryons and the first observation of the decay $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → pK−e+e−.

Abstract: This paper is a tutorial on Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) and its applications. FCA is an applied branch of Lattice Theory, a mathematical discipline which enables formalisation of concepts as basic units of human thinking and analysing data in the object-attribute form. Originated in early 80s, during the last three decades, it became a popular human-centred tool for knowledge representation and data analysis with numerous applications. Since the tutorial was specially prepared for RuSSIR 2014, the covered FCA topics include Information Retrieval with a focus on visualisation aspects, Machine Learning, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, Text Mining and several others.

Abstract: The refined theory of basic human values (Schwartz et al., 2012) divides the circular continuum of values into 19 motivationally distinct values. Research with a new questionnaire discriminated these values in 10 countries and demonstrated the benefits of the finer distinctions. We ask, whether researchers can gain by applying the refined theory to the large repository of available data gathered with the 40-Item Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ40)? How many, if any, of the more refined values can be distinguished in PVQ40 data, and does this provide improved understanding of the topics studied? We addressed these questions with data from 13 countries on four continents (total N = 7,352). Theory-based multidimensional scaling and confirmatory factor analyses in each country revealed several more narrowly defined values in the PVQ data. Examples from 14 countries demonstrated that these refinements can increase predictive and explanatory power.
