TL;DR: Low-dimensional subspaces of parameter space, such as the first principal components of the stochastic gradient descent (SGD) trajectory, are constructed, which contain diverse sets of high performing models and show that Bayesian model averaging over the induced posterior produces accurate predictions and well calibrated predictive uncertainty for both regression and image classification.
Abstract: Bayesian inference was once a gold standard for learning with neural networks, providing accurate full predictive distributions and well calibrated uncertainty. However, scaling Bayesian inference techniques to deep neural networks is challenging due to the high dimensionality of the parameter space. In this paper, we construct low-dimensional subspaces of parameter space, such as the first principal components of the stochastic gradient descent (SGD) trajectory, which contain diverse sets of high performing models. In these subspaces, we are able to apply elliptical slice sampling and variational inference, which struggle in the full parameter space. We show that Bayesian model averaging over the induced posterior in these subspaces produces accurate predictions and well calibrated predictive uncertainty for both regression and image classification.

TL;DR: This paper showed that population diversity, as determined predominantly during the exodus of humans from Africa tens of thousands of years ago, has contributed significantly to the risk and intensity of internal confl icts, accounting for the confounding effects of geographical, institutional, and cultural characteristics, as well as for the level of economic development.
Abstract: This research advances the hypothesis and establishes empirically that interpersonal population diversity has contributed significantly to the emergence, prevalence, recurrence, and severity of intrasocietal confl icts. Exploiting an exogenous source of variations in population diversity across nations and ethnic groups, it demonstrates that population diversity, as determined predominantly during the exodus of humans from Africa tens of thousands of years ago, has contributed significantly to the risk and intensity of historical and contemporary internal confl icts, accounting for the confounding effects of geographical, institutional, and cultural characteristics, as well as for the level of economic development. These findings arguably reflect the adverse effect of population diversity on interpersonal trust, its contribution to divergence in preferences for public goods and redistributive policies, and its impact on the degree of fractionalization and polarization across ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Borel-Moore Hochschild homology of the second kind (known also as the compactly supported hochschild cohomology) for curved DG-categories is defined and studied.
Abstract: We define and study the Hochschild (co)homology of the second kind (known also as the Borel-Moore Hochschild homology and the compactly supported Hochschild cohomology) for curved DG-categories. An isomorphism between the Hochschild (co)homology of the second kind of a CDG-category B and the same of the DG-category C of right CDG-modules over B, projective and finitely generated as graded B-modules, is constructed. Sufficient conditions for an isomorphism of the two kinds of Hochschild (co)homology of a DG-category are formulated in terms of the two kinds of derived categories of DG-modules over it. In particular, a kind of "resolution of the diagonal" condition for the diagonal CDG-bimodule B over a CDG-category B guarantees an isomorphism of the two kinds of Hochschild (co)homology of the corresponding DG-category C. Several classes of examples are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the effects of fiscal consolidation in decentralized public finance on a large dataset of Italian municipalities and show that municipalities increase arrears on committed investment expenditure as a response to intergovernmental transfer cuts.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a strategy to switch from conventional environmentally polluting products to green product innovations (GPIs) by switching to green products from traditional environmentally polluted products.
Abstract: Firms are under constant pressure from various governmental and nongovernmental agencies to switch from conventional environmentally polluting products to green product innovations (GPIs). However, ...
