Abstract: We broaden the developmental focus of the theory of universals in basic human values (Schwartz, 1992) by presenting supportive evidence on children’s values from six countries: Germany, Italy, Poland, Bulgaria, the USA, and New Zealand. 3,088 7-11-year-old children completed the Picture-Based Value Survey for Children (PBVS-C, Doring et al., 2010). Grade 5 children also completed the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ, Schwartz, 2003). Findings reveal that the broad value structures, sex-differences in value priorities, and pan-cultural value hierarchies typical of adults have already taken form at this early age. We discuss the conceptual implications of these findings for the new field of children’s basic values by embedding them in the recent developmental literature.

Abstract: We introduce the notion of an instanton bundle on a Fano threefold of index 2. For such bundles we give an analogue of a monadic description and discuss the curve of jumping lines. The cases of threefolds of degree 5 and 4 are considered in a greater detail.

Abstract: The efficiency of the labor market critically depends on the design of its institutions, including employment protection legislation. However, since formal laws can be observed to varying degrees, the actual enforcement regime shapes incentives and constraints. Most of the studies exploring the effects of employment protection on labor market performance implicitly assume that compliance is near to complete. However, if enforcement varies widely across regions/cities or segments of firms, then this variation may cause variation in performance. This paper, looking at Russia, explores whether cross-regional and inter-temporal variation in enforcement of employment protection laws is significant and is translated into regional labor market outcomes. The paper utilizes a unique data set based on State Labor Inspectorate data and Supreme Court statistics.

Abstract: We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ+μ− and B → Ke+e−, and their ratio (RK), using a data sample of 711 fb−1 that contains 772 × 106 $$ B\overline{B} $$ events. The data were collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The ratio RK is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q2): q2 ∈ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (> 14.18) GeV2/c4, along with the whole q2 region. The RK value for q2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2/c4 is $$ {1.03}_{-0.24}^{+0.28} $$ ± 0.01. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for RK are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure CP-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same q2 bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the q2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2/c4 bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, $$ d\mathrm{\mathcal{B}} $$ /dq2, are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged B decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral B decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating B → Kμ±e∓ decays and set 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of 10−8 for B+ → K+μ±e∓, and B0 → K0μ±e∓ modes.

Abstract: The asymptotic theory is developed for polynomial sequences that are generated by the three-term higher-order recurrence $$Q_{n+1}=zQ_{n}-a_{n-p+1}Q_{n-p},\quad p\in\mathbb{N},n\geq p,$$ where z is a complex variable and the coefficients a k are positive and satisfy the perturbation condition ∑ =1 ∞ |a n −a|<∞. Our results generalize known results for p=1, that is, for orthogonal polynomial sequences on the real line that belong to the Blumenthal–Nevai class. As is known, for p≥2, the role of the interval is replaced by a starlike set S of p+1 rays emanating from the origin on which the Q n satisfy a multiple orthogonality condition involving p measures. Here we obtain strong asymptotics for the Q n in the complex plane outside the common support of these measures as well as on the (finite) open rays of their support. In so doing, we obtain an extension of Weyl’s famous theorem dealing with compact perturbations of bounded self-adjoint operators. Furthermore, we derive generalizations of the classical Szegő functions, and we show that there is an underlying Nikishin system hierarchy for the orthogonality measures that is related to the Weyl functions. Our results also have application to Hermite–Pade approximants as well as to vector continued fractions.
