TL;DR: By employing the interference constraint criterion at the FS, an analytical expression for the capacity of the cognitive-uplink FSS is derived, which is useful in understanding the limits in performance and the potential application of the considered coexistence scenario.
Abstract: This paper investigates the performance limits of cognitive-uplink fixed satellite service (FSS) and terrestrial fixed service (FS) operating in the range 27.5–29.5 GHz for Ka-band. In light of standard recommendations from the International Telecommunications Union and a rain-fading channel model, we analyze the interference level at the FS receiver by considering statistical properties of the channel, propagation losses, and antenna patterns. By employing the interference constraint criterion at the FS, an analytical expression for the capacity of the cognitive-uplink FSS is derived, which is useful in understanding the limits in performance and the potential application of the considered coexistence scenario. Simulations are carried out to verify the theoretical derivations and highlight the impact of key parameters on the performance limits.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported diverse soliton operations in a thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser by taking advantage of a tapered fiber-based topological insulator (TI) Bi2Te3 saturable absorber (SA).
Abstract: We reported diverse soliton operations in a thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser by taking advantage of a tapered fiber-based topological insulator (TI) Bi2Te3 saturable absorber (SA). The SA had a nonsaturable loss of ∼53.5% and a modulation depth of 9.8%. Stable fundamentally mode-locked solitons at 1909.5 nm with distinct Kelly sidebands on the output spectrum, a pulse repetition rate of 21.5 MHz, and a measured pulse width of 1.26 ps were observed in the work. By increasing the pump power, both bunched solitons with soliton number up to 15 and harmonically mode-locked solitons with harmonic order up to 10 were obtained. To our knowledge, this is the first report of both bunched solitons and harmonically mode-locked solitons in a fiber laser at 2 μm region incorporated with TIs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a lumped-mass method is introduced to study the propagation of elastic waves in two-dimensional periodic systems, which makes it possible for easy calculations of band structures of phononic crystals with interfaces of large contrast of elastic constants as well as units of any shapes.
Abstract: A lumped-mass method is introduced to study the propagation of elastic waves in two-dimensional periodic systems. First, it is used to calculate the band structure of an array of Pb columns in an epoxy background. Second, the method is applied to the same array of Pb columns in a soft rubber background. The results are compared with those calculated with the well-known plane-wave expansion formalism, where the advantages of the lumped-mass method are pointed out and analyzed. These advantages make it possible for easy calculations of band structures of phononic crystals with interfaces of large contrast of elastic constants as well as units of any shapes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a gate-based simulation approach for open-system dynamics with trapped ions is presented, which can be adapted to scalable and two-dimensional ion-trap architectures, which are currently under development.
Abstract: In a recent experiment, Barreiro et al. demonstrated the fundamental building blocks of an open-system quantum simulator with trapped ions (Nature 470, 486 (2011)). Using up to ve ions, single- and multi-qubit entangling gate operations were combined with optical pumping in stroboscopic sequences. This enabled the implementation of both coherent many-body dynamics as well as dissipative processes by controlling the coupling of the system to an articial, suitably tailored environment. This engineering was illustrated by the dissipative preparation of entangled two- and four-qubit states, the simulation of coherent four-body spin interactions and the quantum non-demolition measurement of a multi-qubit stabilizer operator. In the present paper, we present the theoretical framework of this gate-based (\digital") simulation approach for open-system dynamics with trapped ions. In addition, we discuss how within this simulation approach minimal instances of spin models of interest in the context of topological quantum computing and condensed matter physics can be realized in state-of-the-art linear ion-trap quantum computing architectures. We outline concrete simulation schemes for Kitaev's toric code Hamiltonian and a recently suggested color code model. The presented simulation protocols can be adapted to scalable and two-dimensional ion-trap architectures, which are currently under development.
