Abstract: Registration of images in the presence of intra-image signal fluctuations is a challenging task. The definition of an appropriate objective function measuring the similarity between the images is crucial for accurate registration. This paper introduces an objective function that embeds local phase features derived from the monogenic signal in the modality independent neighborhood descriptor (MIND). The image similarity relies on the autocorrelation of local structure (ALOST) which has two important properties: 1) low sensitivity to space-variant intensity distortions (e.g., differences in contrast enhancement in MRI); 2) high distinctiveness for ‘salient’ image features such as edges. The ALOST method is quantitatively compared to the MIND approach based on three different datasets: thoracic CT images, synthetic and real abdominal MR images. The proposed method outperformed the NMI and MIND similarity measures on these three datasets. The registration of dynamic contrast enhanced and post-contrast MR images of patients with Crohn's disease led to relative contrast enhancement measures with the highest correlation $({\rm r}=0.56)$ to the Crohn's disease endoscopic index of severity.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel slow-wave half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) combined with spoof surface plasmon polariton (SPP) structure. In this design, subwavelength corrugated grooves are etched on the up metal layer of HMSIW to support an SPP mode. The dispersion and transmission characteristics of the proposed hybrid HMSIW-SPP structure are analyzed and compared with the classic HMSIW. To experimentally validate this design, a prototype is fabricated and measured. A slow-wave effect is clearly observed in the proposed hybrid transmission line, and its wavelength is reduced by over 50% without sacrificing its transmission performance. This structure features a simple architecture and excellent slow-wave effect.

Abstract: Warm dense matter (WDM) -- an exotic state of highly compressed matter -- has attracted high interest in recent years in astrophysics and for dense laboratory systems. At the same time, this state is extremely difficult to treat theoretically. This is due to the simultaneous appearance of quantum degeneracy, Coulomb correlations and thermal effects, as well as the overlap of plasma and condensed phases. Recent breakthroughs are due to the successful application of density functional theory (DFT) methods which, however, often lack the necessary accuracy and predictive capability for WDM applications. The situation has changed with the availability of the first \textit{ab initio} data for the exchange-correlation free energy of the warm dense uniform electron gas (UEG) that were obtained by quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, for recent reviews, see Dornheim \textit{et al.}, Phys. Plasmas \textbf{24}, 056303 (2017) and Phys. Rep. \textbf{744}, 1-86 (2018). In the present article we review recent further progress in QMC simulations of the warm dense UEG: namely, \textit{ab initio} results for the static local field correction $G(q)$ and for the dynamic structure factor $S(q,\omega)$. These data are of key relevance for the comparison with x-ray scattering experiments at free electron laser facilities and for the improvement of theoretical models. In the second part of this paper we discuss simulations of WDM out of equilibrium. The theoretical approaches include Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics, quantum kinetic theory, time-dependent DFT and hydrodynamics. Here we analyze strengths and limitations of these methods and argue that progress in WDM simulations will require a suitable combination of all methods. A particular role might be played by quantum hydrodynamics, and we concentrate on problems, recent progress, and possible improvements of this method.

Abstract: The Daya Bay experiment was the first to report simultaneous measurements of reactor antineutrinos at multiple baselines leading to the discovery of ν¯e oscillations over km-baselines. Subsequent data has provided the world׳s most precise measurement of sin^2 2θ_(13) and the effective mass splitting Δm^2_(ee). The experiment is located in Daya Bay, China where the cluster of six nuclear reactors is among the world׳s most prolific sources of electron antineutrinos. Multiple antineutrino detectors are deployed in three underground water pools at different distances from the reactor cores to search for deviations in the antineutrino rate and energy spectrum due to neutrino mixing. Instrumented with photomultiplier tubes, the water pools serve as shielding against natural radioactivity from the surrounding rock and provide efficient muon tagging. Arrays of resistive plate chambers over the top of each pool provide additional muon detection. The antineutrino detectors were specifically designed for measurements of the antineutrino flux with minimal systematic uncertainty. Relative detector efficiencies between the near and far detectors are known to better than 0.2%. With the unblinding of the final two detectors’ baselines and target masses, a complete description and comparison of the eight antineutrino detectors can now be presented. This paper describes the Daya Bay detector systems, consisting of eight antineutrino detectors in three instrumented water pools in three underground halls, and their operation through the first year of eight detector data-taking.
