Abstract: Weyl points are discrete locations in the three-dimensional momentum space where two bands cross linearly with each other. They serve as the monopoles of Berry curvature in the momentum space, and their existence requires breaking of either time-reversal or inversion symmetry1–16. Although various non-centrosymmetric Weyl systems have been reported15, demonstration of Weyl degeneracies due to breaking of the time-reversal symmetry remains scarce and is limited to electronic systems17,18. Here, we report the experimental observation of photonic Weyl degeneracies in a magnetized semiconductor—InSb, which behaves as a magnetized plasma19 for electromagnetic waves at the terahertz band. By varying the magnetic field strength, Weyl points and the corresponding photonic Fermi arcs have been demonstrated. Our observation establishes magnetized semiconductors as a reconfigurable20 terahertz Weyl system, which may prompt research on novel magnetic topological phenomena such as chiral Majorana-type edge states and zero modes in classic systems21,22. Photonic Weyl points—topologically chiral singularity points in three-dimensional momentum space—have been realized in a homogeneous non-reciprocal material without a crystal lattice structure.

Abstract: We report a facile modification of graphene oxide (GO) by gelatin to mimic charged proteins present in the extracellular matrix during bone formation. The bioinspired surface of GO–gelatin (GO–Gel) composite was used for biomimetic mineralization of hydroxyapatite (HA). A detailed structural and morphological characterization of the mineralized composite was performed. Additionally, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on the GO–Gel surfaces to observe various cellular activities and HA mineralization. Higher cellular activities such as cell adhesion, cell proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) were observed on the GO–Gel surface compared with the GO or glass surface. The increase of ALP confirms that the proposed GO–Gel promotes the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Moreover, the evidence of mineralization evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and alizarin red staining (ARS) corroborate the idea that a native osteoid matrix is ultimately deposited. All these data suggest that the GO–Gel hybrids will have great potential as osteogenesis promoting scaffolds for successful application in bone surgery.

Abstract: In many-objective optimization problems (MaOPs), forming sound tradeoffs between convergence and diversity for the environmental selection of evolutionary algorithms is a laborious task. In particular, strengthening the selection pressure of population toward the Pareto-optimal front becomes more challenging, since the proportion of nondominated solutions in the population scales up sharply with the increase of the number of objectives. To address these issues, this paper first defines the nondominated solutions exhibiting evident tendencies toward the Pareto-optimal front as prominent solutions, using the hyperplane formed by their neighboring solutions, to further distinguish among nondominated solutions. Then, a novel environmental selection strategy is proposed with two criteria in mind: 1) if the number of nondominated solutions is larger than the population size, all the prominent solutions are first identified to strengthen the selection pressure. Subsequently, a part of the other nondominated solutions are selected to balance convergence and diversity and 2) otherwise, all the nondominated solutions are selected; then a part of the dominated solutions are selected according to the predefined reference vectors. Moreover, based on the definition of prominent solutions and the new selection strategy, we propose a hyperplane assisted evolutionary algorithm, referred here as hpaEA , for solving MaOPs. To demonstrate the performance of hpaEA , extensive experiments are conducted to compare it with five state-of-the-art many-objective evolutionary algorithms on 36 many-objective benchmark instances. The experimental results show the superiority of hpaEA which significantly outperforms the compared algorithms on 20 out of 36 benchmark instances.
