Abstract: A novel compact electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure in a spiral shape is presented and investigated. This structure significantly enlarges the capacitance between neighboring elements. The simulations and experimental results have proved that the size of the spiral structure is only 30.9% of the conventional EBG structure. Two applications have been shown, including patch antenna with the spiral EBG structure and a double-element microstrip antenna array with low mutual coupling. The measured results show that a gain improvement over 3 dB and a significant reduction of cross polarization in H-plane are obtained. A 6 dB reduction of mutual coupling is achieved in a double-element EBG microstrip antenna array.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider an uplink satellite multiterrestrial relay network, which employs a single-antenna user to communicate with a satellite via multiple decode-and-forward (DF) terrestrial relays. Due to the spectrum sharing policy, terrestrial relays are interfered by cochannel interference (CCI). For inevitable radio frequency (RF) front-end imperfections, the interconnected nodes of the whole network are always impaired by inherent hardware impairments (HIs). Specifically, in order to improve the overall system performance, a partial relay selection scheme is used to enhance the system performance by improving the spatial diversity. On this foundation, we have derived the closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) and throughput of the considered system, where both the satellite and terrestrial channels are under independent nonidentical distributions. To get better insights at high signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs), the asymptotic behaviors for the system performance are also derived. From the asymptotic results, the impacts of CCI and the HIs on the system performance are quantitatively analyzed. Especially, the OP and throughput will have bounds when the system is under HIs. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation results corroborate the theoretical analysis and illustrate the joint effects of CCI and HIs on the considered system.

Abstract: The surface wrinkling of biological tissues is ubiquitous in nature. Accumulating evidence suggests that the mechanical force plays a significant role in shaping the biological morphologies. Controlled wrinkling has been demonstrated to be able to spontaneously form rich multiscale patterns, on either planar or curved surfaces. The surface wrinkling on planar substrates has been investigated thoroughly during the past decades. However, most wrinkling morphologies in nature are based on the curved biological surfaces and the research of controllable patterning on curved substrates still remains weak. The study of wrinkling on curved substrates is critical for understanding the biological growth, developing three-dimensional (3D) or four-dimensional (4D) fabrication techniques, and creating novel topographic patterns. In this review, fundamental wrinkling mechanics and recent advances in both fabrications and applications of the wrinkling patterns on curved substrates are summarized. The mechanics behind the wrinkles is compared between the planar and the curved cases. Beyond the film thickness, modulus ratio, and mismatch strain, the substrate curvature is one more significant parameter controlling the surface wrinkling. Curved substrates can be both solid and hollow with various 3D geometries across multiple length scales. Up to date, the wrinkling morphologies on solid/hollow core–shell spheres and cylinders have been simulated and selectively produced. Emerging applications of the curved topographic patterns have been found in smart wetting surfaces, cell culture interfaces, healthcare materials, and actuators, which may accelerate the development of artificial organs, stimuli-responsive devices, and micro/nano fabrications with higher dimensions.
