Abstract: In this paper we explore the mobility of a mobile sink in a wireless sensor network (WSN) to prolong the network lifetime. Since the mechanical movement of mobile sink is driven by petrol and/or electricity, the total travel distance of the mobile sink should be bounded. To minimize the data loss during the transition of the mobile sink from its current location to its next location, its moving distance must be restricted. Also, considering the overhead on a routing tree construction at each sojourn location of the mobile sink, it is required that the mobile sink sojourns for at least a certain amount of time at each of its sojourn locations. The distance constrained mobile sink problem in a WSN is to find an optimal sojourn tour for the mobile sink such that the sum of sojourn times in the tour is maximized, subject to the above mentioned constraints. In this paper we first formulate the problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). Due to its NP-hardness, we then devise a novel heuristic for it. We finally conduct extensive experiments by simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of network lifetime. The experimental results demonstrate that the solution delivered by the proposed heuristic is nearly optimal which is comparable with the one by solving the MILP formulation but with much shorter running time.

Abstract: On June 17, 2013, MilkyWay-2 (Tianhe-2) supercomputer was crowned as the fastest supercomputer in the world on the 41th TOP500 list. This paper provides an overview of the MilkyWay-2 project and describes the design of hardware and software systems. The key architecture features of MilkyWay-2 are highlighted, including neo-heterogeneous compute nodes integrating commodity-off-the-shelf processors and accelerators that share similar instruction set architecture, powerful networks that employ proprietary interconnection chips to support the massively parallel message-passing communications, proprietary 16-core processor designed for scientific computing, efficient software stacks that provide high performance file system, emerging programming model for heterogeneous systems, and intelligent system administration. We perform extensive evaluation with wide-ranging applications from LINPACK and Graph500 benchmarks to massively parallel software deployed in the system.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a simple, efficient, yet robust multiresolution approach to texture classification—binary rotation invariant and noise tolerant (BRINT). The proposed approach is very fast to build, very compact while remaining robust to illumination variations, rotation changes, and noise. We develop a novel and simple strategy to compute a local binary descriptor based on the conventional local binary pattern (LBP) approach, preserving the advantageous characteristics of uniform LBP. Points are sampled in a circular neighborhood, but keeping the number of bins in a single-scale LBP histogram constant and small, such that arbitrarily large circular neighborhoods can be sampled and compactly encoded over a number of scales. There is no necessity to learn a texton dictionary, as in methods based on clustering, and no tuning of parameters is required to deal with different data sets. Extensive experimental results on representative texture databases show that the proposed BRINT not only demonstrates superior performance to a number of recent state-of-the-art LBP variants under normal conditions, but also performs significantly and consistently better in presence of noise due to its high distinctiveness and robustness. This noise robustness characteristic of the proposed BRINT is evaluated quantitatively with different artificially generated types and levels of noise (including Gaussian, salt and pepper, and speckle noise) in natural texture images.

Abstract: NOMA has been recognized as a highly promising FRA technology to satisfy the requirements of the fifth generation era on high spectral efficiency and massive connectivity. Since the EE has become a growing concern in FRA from both the industrial and societal perspectives, this article discusses the sustainability issues of NOMA. We first thoroughly examine the theoretical power regions of NOMA to show the minimum transmission power with fixed data rate requirement, demonstrating the EE performance advantage of NOMA over orthogonal multiple access. Then we explore the role of energy-aware resource allocation and grant-free transmission in further enhancing the EE performance of NOMA. Based on this exploration, a hybrid NOMA strategy that reaps the joint benefits of resource allocation and grantfree transmission is investigated to simultaneously accomplish high throughput, large connectivity, and low energy cost. Finally, we identify some important and interesting future directions for NOMA designers to follow in the next decade.
