TL;DR: The influence of aggregate shape on fracture energy, tensile strength and elasticity modulus in concrete is considered in this paper, where eight simple cement-based composites were designed, manufactured and tested, with two purposes: to provide experimental data that can throw some light on this involved problem and help in the design of future cementbased composite, and supply information that can be used as a benchmark for checking numerical models of concrete failure, as this simple composite is amenable to being modelled quite easily.

Abstract: We studied the ability of the probiotic organism Enterococcus faecium SF68 to antagonize Giardia intestinalis infection in mice. Oral feeding of E. faecium strain SF68 starting 7 d before inoculation with Giardia trophozoites significantly increased the production of specific anti-Giardia intestinal IgA and blood IgG. This humoral response was mirrored at the cellular level by an increased percentage of CD4(+) T cells in the Peyer's patches and in the spleens of SF68-fed mice. The improvement of specific immune responses in probiotic-fed mice was associated with a diminution in the number of active trophozoites in the small intestine as well as decreased shedding of fecal Giardia antigens (GSA65 protein). The ability of SF68 to stimulate the immune system at both mucosal and systemic levels highlights mechanisms by which this probiotic might antagonize pathogens in vivo. Taken together, the data demonstrate the strong potential of strain SF68 to prevent protozoa from causing intestinal infections.

Abstract: The Parana River, the sixth largest in the world, is the receptor of pollution loads from tributaries traversing urban and industrialized areas plus agricultural expanses, particularly so in the river’s middle and lower reaches along the Argentine sector. In the present study, we analyzed and discussed the main water quality parameters, sediment compositions, and content of the herbicide glyphosate plus its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in water and sediments. Samples were obtained from distal positions in the principal tributaries of the Parana and the main watercourse during surveys conducted in 2011 and 2012 to monitor the basin. Only 15 % of the water samples contained detectable concentrations of glyphosate at an average concentration of 0.60 μg/L, while no detectable levels of AMPA were observed. The herbicide and metabolite were primarily present in sediments of the middle and lower stretch’s tributaries, there occurring at a respective average of 37 and 17 % in samples. The mean detectable concentrations measured were 742 and 521 μg/kg at mean, maximum, and minimum glyphosate/AMPA ratios of 2.76, 7.80, and 0.06, respectively. The detection of both compounds was correlated with the presence of sulfides and copper in the sediment matrix.

Abstract: Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) comprise three major geographic genetic pools, one in Mexico, Central America, and Colombia, another in the southern Andes, and a third in Ecuador and northern Peru. Species Rhizobium etli is the predominant rhizobia found symbiotically associated with beans in the Americas. We have found polymorphism in the common nodulation gene nodC among R. etli strains from a wide range of geographical origins, which disclosed three nodC types. The different nodC alleles in American strains show varying predominance in their regional distributions in correlation with the centers of bean genetic diversification (BD centers). By cross-inoculating wild common beans from the three BD centers with soils from Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Northwestern Argentina, the R. etli populations from nodules originated from Mexican soil again showed allele predominance that was opposite to those originated from Bolivian and Argentinean soil, whereas populations from Ecuadorian soil were intermediate. These results also indicated that the preferential nodulation of beans by geographically related R. etli lineages was independent of the nodulating environment. Coinoculation of wild common beans from each of the three BD centers with an equicellular mixture of R. etli strains representative of the Mesoamerican and southern Andean lineages revealed a host-dependent distinct competitiveness: beans from the Mesoamerican genetic pool were almost exclusively nodulated by strains from their host region, whereas nodules of beans from the southern Andes were largely occupied by the geographically cognate R. etli lineages. These results suggest coevolution in the centers of host genetic diversification.

Abstract: Regulation of the rapid compensatory growth seen in the remaining adrenal gland of rats following unilateral adrenalectomy is poorly understood. The role of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is obscure as immunoneutralization of circulating ACTH does not affect the observed compensatory growth or hyperplasia. This finding, together with the fact that mechanical manipulation of one adrenal without extirpation is followed by growth only in the contralateral gland, has led to the concept of neural regulation of compensatory adrenal growth via a loop from one adrenal through the hypothalamus and back to the contralateral gland which is independent of ACTH secretion. We recently showed that peptides from the N terminal of ACTH precursor proopiocortin (POC), not containing the gamma-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (gamma-MSH) sequence, can stimulate adrenal mitogenesis and proposed that normal long-term adrenal growth and proliferation involves post-secretional proteolytic cleavage of pro-gamma-MSH [or N-POC(1-74)] to generate the mitogenic factor N-POC(1-48/49) and a C-terminal fragment N-POC(50-74), or rat gamma 3-MSH. We have now investigated this hypothesis further in rats by selectively quenching different regions of circulating POC peptides with specific antisera and observing the effect on the increases in weight, RNA and DNA normally seen in the remaining gland following unilateral adrenalectomy. Our results, reported here, suggest that neurally mediated proteolytic cleavage of the circulating inactive mitogenic precursor pro-gamma-MSH at the adrenal gland is the major mechanism of control of compensatory growth.
