Abstract: We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the field of the Type IIb supernova (SN) 2011dh in M51 performed at ≈1161 rest-frame days after explosion using the Wide Field Camera 3 and near-UV filters F225W and F336W. A star-like object is detected in both bands and the photometry indicates it has negative (F225W – F336W) color. The observed object is compatible with the companion of the now-vanished yellow supergiant progenitor predicted in interacting binary models. We consider it unlikely that the SN is undergoing strong interaction and thus estimate that it makes a small contribution to the observed flux. The possibilities of having detected an unresolved light echo or an unrelated object are briefly discussed and judged unlikely. Adopting a possible range of extinction by dust, we constrain parameters of the proposed binary system. In particular, the efficiency of mass accretion onto the binary companion must be below 50%, if no significant extinction is produced by newly formed dust. Further multiband observations are required in order to confirm the identification of the object as the companion star. If confirmed, the companion star would already be dominant in the UV-optical regime, so it would readily provide a unique opportunity to perform a detailed study of its properties.

Abstract: An adiabatic, nonradial pulsation study of GW Vir stars is presented. The pulsation calculations were based on PG 1159 evolutionary sequences with different stellar masses artificially derived from a full evolutionary sequence of 0.5895 Mthat has been computed by taking the evolutionary history of the progenitor star into account. The artificial sequences were constructed by appropriately scaling the stellar mass of the 0.5895-Msequence well before the models reached the low-luminosity, high-gravity stage of the GW Vir domain. We computed g-mode pulsation periods appropriate to GW Vir variable stars. The implications for the mode-trapping properties of our PG 1159 models are discussed at length. We found that the mode-trapping features characterizing our PG 1159 models are mostly fixed by the stepped shape of the core chemical profile left by prior convective overshooting. This is particularly true at least for the range of periods observed in GW Vir stars. In addition, we make asteroseismic inferences about the internal structure of the GW Vir stars PG 1159-035, PG 2131+066, PG 1707+427, and PG 0122+200.

Abstract: We present full evolutionary calculations appropriate to post-AGB PG1159 stars for a wide range of stellar masses. We take into account the complete evolutionary stages of PG1159 progenitors starting from the Zero Age Main Sequence. We consider the two kinds of Born Again Scenarios, the very late thermal pulse (VLTP) and the late thermal pulse (LTP), that give rise to hydrogen-deficient compositions. The location of our PG1159 tracks in the effective temperature - gravity diagram and their comparison with previous calculations as well as the resulting surface compositions are discussed at some length. Our results reinforce the idea that the different abundances of $^{14}$N observed at the surface of those PG1159 stars with undetected hydrogen is an indication that the progenitors of these stars would have evolved through a VLTP episode, where most of the hydrogen content of the remnant is burnt, or LTP, where hydrogen is not burnt but instead diluted to very low surface abundances. We derive new values for spectroscopical masses based on these new models. We discuss the correlation between the presence of planetary nebulae and the $^{14}$N abundance as another indicator that $^{14}$N-rich objects should come from a VLTP episode while $^{14}$N-deficient ones should be the result of a LTP. Finally, we discuss an evolutionary scenario that could explain the existence of PG1159 stars with unusually high helium abundances and a possible evolutionary connection between these stars and the low mass O(He) stars.

Abstract: Remains of the marine crocodyliform Dakosaurus andiniensis from western South America reveal a lineage that drastically deviated from the skull morphology that characterizes marine crocodyliforms. The snout and lower jaw are extremely robust, short, and high and only bear a few large teeth with serrated edges (resembling those of some terrestrial carnivorous archosaurs). This unusual morphology contrasts with the long and gracile snout and lower jaws bearing numerous teeth, which are present in the closest relatives of D. andiniensis (and interpreted as indicating feeding on small fish or mollusks). Thus, the morphological diversity of pelagic marine crocodyliforms was wider than had been thought.
