Abstract: The aims of this work were to develop gelatin films using glycerol as plasticizer (0–100% based on protein mass) and to establish relationships between glycerol content and structural, barrier, thermal and mechanical film properties. These correlations were established since WVP exhibited a minimum for films containing 20 g glycerol/100 g gelatin, while flexibility increased from 2.2% to 180.9% and T g shifted from 137.5 to 21.3 °C, for films without glycerol and plasticized films with 80 g glycerol/100 g gelatin, respectively. Furthermore, a satisfactory fit between T g experimental data and predicted values by Couchman and Karasz's equation was found, with glycerol ranging from 0 to 60 g/100 g gelatin. T g values correlated inversely with film moisture content, and both mechanical and thermal properties showed a strong dependence since elastic modulus and T g followed a similar trend. Films exhibited similar X-ray patterns regardless of the glycerol concentration, showing a displacement in the position of the peak located at around 2 θ = 8°, which shifted towards lower 2 θ values with glycerol content. The abovementioned correlations between film physical properties and glycerol content, would allow to select the optimum conditions to develop, process and manage gelatin films according to specific requirements. Industrial relevance The methodology used in this work is of considerable importance for the film development and could be used in industrial applications. The management of film formulations and the function that each component plays could allow to obtain tailormade films. A series of relationships between film properties based on gelatin was found, as well as between these properties and glycerol content of the films. An inflexion point in the behavior and microstructure of these materials was established due to glycerol concentration. The addition of higher quantities of glycerol than that corresponds to the abovementioned point, would not be recommendable since the properties are not modified and moreover, it is not profitable. These results would allow better management of film formulations and an appropriate selection of plasticizer concentration in accordance with the specific requirements of potential users.

Abstract: We present a photometric investigation of the globular cluster population of NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, in Washington C and Kron R filters within a field of 36' × 36', corresponding to about 200 × 200 kpc at the Fornax distance. This is the largest area around this galaxy ever studied with CCD photometry. The cluster system of NGC 1399 is found to extend farther than 100 kpc away from the galaxy. The color distribution exhibits a pronounced bimodality. Within a radial distance of about 55 kpc, the red clusters are more strongly concentrated toward the center than the blue clusters. At larger radii, the surface density profiles of the clusters are indistinguishable and match well the distribution of the galaxy light. Over the entire radial distance range, the surface brightness profile of NGC 1399 can be very well fitted by a power law with an exponent of -1.85 and a core radius of 33. No steepening of the luminosity profile can be detected at large radii. We suggest that the power-law profile of NGC 1399 results from the galaxy being embedded in a large dark matter halo, which prevents the stellar density profile from steepening outward. The cluster system contains 6450 ± 700 clusters and the specific frequency is found to be 5.1 ± 1.2 in the V band. While NGC 1399 shows a pronounced color gradient the nearby comparison galaxy NGC 1404 does not show such a gradient. Using simple assumptions about the underlying population that formed during the same star formation event as the globular clusters, we present a model in which we use radially changing local specific frequencies for the red and blue subpopulations to fit the observations. We find that within 7' the required specific frequency of the blue clusters alone is a factor of approximately 3 larger than that of the red ones. Outside this radius, however, both populations have the same high local specific frequency of around 8 and 13 (blue and red clusters, respectively).

Abstract: Species of the anamorph genus Phoma are commonly isolated from a wide range of ecological niches. They are notoriously difficult to identify due to the paucity of morphological features and the plasticity of these when cultivated on agar media. Species linked to Phoma section Peyronellaea are typified by the production of dictyochlamydospores and thus have additional characters to use in taxon delineation. However, the taxonomy of this section is still not fully understood. Furthermore the production of such chlamydospores also is known in some other sections of Phoma. DNA sequences were generated from three loci, namely ITS, actin, and 3-tubulin, to clarify the phylogeny of Phoma taxa that produce dictyochlamydospores. Results were unable to support section Peyronellaea as a taxonomic entity. Dictyochlamydospore formation appears to be a feature that developed, or was lost, many times during the evolution of Phoma. Furthermore, based on the multigene analyses, five new Phoma species could be delineated while a further five required taxonomic revision to be consistent with the genetic variation observed.
