TL;DR: The membership dynamics of a group of Tana River red colobus provide the first evidence of high rates of membership turnover by both sexes in primates, and it is speculated that the function of female transference in this case may be related to mate choice and the avoidance of infanticide.
Abstract: Red colobus are one of a small number of primate species in which females have been reported to transfer between breeding groups more commonly than males1–3. Several authors have hypothesised that in such species transference may serve to reduce the risk to females of producing offspring of lower fitness through inbreeding1–6. The hypothesis offers no explanation of why females rather than males are responsible for outbreeding in these species, but remains plausible so long as male membership of breeding groups is relatively stable; for once members of one sex have evolved dispersal mechanisms reducing the risk of inbreeding, pressures on the other sex to do likewise will be lowered5. Hence, if both sexes commonly migrate, the hypothesis is weakened. I describe here the membership dynamics of a group of Tana River red colobus, Colobus badius rufomitratus, which provide the first evidence of high rates of membership turnover by both sexes in primates, and speculate that the function of female transference in this case may be related to mate choice and the avoidance of infanticide.

TL;DR: This study was aimed at examining the contents of zinc, lead, cadmium, and mercury in fishes caught around the coastal waters of West Malaysia to find indicators of possible industrial pollution in the areas under study.
Abstract: This study was aimed at examining the contents of zinc, lead, cadmium, and mercury in fishes caught around the coastal waters of West Malaysia. The areas chosen differ in hinterland industrial development, consisting mainly of ports, shipping, oil refineries, and miscellaneous small manufacturing industries in the west and south and basically non-industrialized areas in the north and east of peninsular Malaysia. It was assumed that if there were any serious pollution resulting from industrial developments, the coastal water fishes and marine lives would also be affected. Since heavy metals like cadmium, lead, and mercury are cumulative in the fish's flesh, the levels of these metals would be good indicators of possible industrial pollution in the areas under study.

TL;DR: Children who developed hypertension had significantly higher PV lower PRA than children with acute glomerulonephritis who were normotensive and the control subjects and a positive correlation was found between MAP and PV and negative correlation betweenMAP and PRA.
Abstract: Summary: The relationship between plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma volume (PV) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in children with acute glomerulonephritis was assessed in two groups of patients between the ages of three to six years. One group with normal blood pressure (13 children) and a group with significantly elevated blood pressure (20 children) were compared with a control group of ten normal children. In patients who developed hypertension (MAP: 113 ± 3 mmHg), the mean PRA was 0±45 ± 0±1 ng/ml/hr, and the mean PV measured in ten of these children was 1526 ± 47±9 ml/M2. In the group of normotensive patients with acute glomerulonephritis (MAP = 79 ± 1±8 mmHg), the mean PRA was 1±6 ± 0±32 ng/ml/hr, the mean PV in four of these patients was 1285±37±6 ml/M2. The children in the control group (MAP = 77± 1±6 mmHg) had a mean PRA of 7±93 ± 0±2 ng/ml/hr and six of these children had a mean PV of 1115 ± 103 ml/M2. The results showed children who developed hypertension had significantly higher PV lower PRA than children with acute glomerulonephritis who were normotensive and the control subjects. A positive correlation was found between MAP and PV and negative correlation between MAP and PRA. There was no significant difference in MAP, PV and PRA between children with acute glomerulonephritis with normal blood pressure and children in the control group.

TL;DR: In this paper, a test is made of Deutsch's hypothesis that primordial intergroup conflict is caused by social mobilization when social assimilation lags, using a 32-nation sample from Black Africa, and two-stage regression analysis is used to test the hypothesis.
Abstract: Using a 32-nation sample from Black Africa, a test is made of Deutsch's hypothesis that primordial intergroup conflict is caused by social mobilization when social assimilation lags. A two-stage regression analysis is used to test the hypothesis. Both in terms of bivariate and multivariate regression analysis, it was discovered that indicators of low social assimilation are insignificant to explain primordial inter-group conflict; instead, it was found that the banning of political parties is statistically significant to the correlation. Simply therefore, conflict in SubSahara Africa is really political and bears little relationship to questions of ethnicity and primordialism. However, given the preliminary nature of the data and problems of data accuracy, the results must be regarded as only tentative.

TL;DR: The only available data from the Airport have been used to examine the effects of air pollution and urbanization on visibility in the Kuala Lumpur-Petaling Jaya area as discussed by the authors, and there appeared a slight trend of deteriorating visibility during the 1966-75 decade particularly in the visibility range of >32.0 km (>20 miles).
Abstract: The only available data from the Airport have been used to examine the effects of air pollution and urbanization on visibility in the Kuala Lumpur-Petaling Jaya area. Although evidence were still inconclusive, there appeared to be a slight trend of deteriorating visibility during the 1966-75 decade particularly in the visibility range of >32.0 km (>20 miles). The growth of urbanization and industrial development within and around Kuala Lumpur-Petaling Jaya coupled with the absence of any form of smoke control measures have probably been the major contributory factors.
