TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between the dimensionless thickness of the calendered fluid and that of the incoming fluid, Δi* is shown to be a function of the ratio of the surface velocities of the cylinders and the power law index.
Abstract: The calendering of non-Newtonian fluids by two rotating cylinders to produce thin films of fluids finds wide application in polymer sheet-making and food-drying industries. Theoretical work has previouly been devoted to the symmetrical case where the cylinders are of equal diameters rotating at the same speed. The present work proposes a new one-film theory of calendering of power law fluids for unequal radii and surface velocities of the calendering cylinders. The relationship between the dimensionless thickness of the calendered fluid, Δe* and that of the incoming fluid, Δi* is shown to be a function of the ratio of the surface velocities of the cylinders and the power law index. The result further shows that Δe* tends to asymptote after the second decade of Δi*

TL;DR: In this article, a young Malay patient with a homozygous (δβ)°-thalas- semic condition had a large deletion with a 5' end between the Aha III and Apa I sites, some 200-400 bp 5' to the Aγ globin gene and a 3' end beyond sequences 17-18 kb 3' to β Globin gene.
Abstract: Hematological and clinical data are presented for a young Malay patient with a homozygous (δβ)°-thalas- semic condition. His red blood cells contained 1007% fetal hemoglobin with α and Gγ chains only. Detailed gene mapping defined a large deletion with a 5' end between the Aha III and Apa I sites, some 200–400 bp 5' to the Aγ globin gene and a 3' end beyond sequences 17–18 kb 3' to the β globin gene. This Gγ(Aγδβ)°-type of thalassemia is different from all the other six types described before. Comparison of the hematological data of this patient with those of homozygotes for either the Sicilian or Spanish types of GγAγ(δβ)°-thalassemia showed no differences; all homozygotes have a moderate anemia which is accentuated by the relatively high oxygen affinity of the Hb F containing erythrocytes.

TL;DR: Fewer adultMicrophallus pygmaeus are recovered from the small intestine of adrenalectomized male mice than from sham-operated counterparts, and changes in parasite numbers are attributed to the immunosuppressive action of corticosterone.
Abstract: Fewer adultMicrophallus pygmaeus are recovered from the small intestine of adrenalectomized male mice than from sham-operated counterparts. Preinfection intraperitoneal injection of 2 IU or 4 IU ACTH adaily for 7 days increases the initial primary worm burden in male mice. Preinfection intramuscular injection of 325 μg corticosterone daily for 7 days increases the initial worm burden and alters the subsequent rate of decline and duration of the primary infection. However, egg production is unaffected. The changes in parasite numbers are attributed to the immunosuppressive action of corticosterone.

TL;DR: In vitro antibiotic susceptibility patterns of 46 strains of S. aureus isolated in nasal carriers as well as of 43 strains in community-acquiredskin infections were characterised, finding high levels of resistance to penicillin, cephalexin and tetracycline.
Abstract: SUMMARY 55% of a sample of patients in a rural community, and 76% of a sample of patients and staff in the local district hospital werefound to be nasal carriers for Staphylococcus aureus. The in vitro antibiotic susceptibility patterns of 46 strains of S. aureus isolated in nasal carriers as well as of 43 strains in community-acquiredskin infections were characterised. High levels of resistance were expressed to penicillin (73%), cephalexin (64%) and tetracycline (46%). Resistance to erythromycin (18%) was moderate. A few strains showed resistance to methicillin (5 isolates), vancomycin (4), [usidic acid (3), cotrimoxazole (1), and none to gentamicin. Penicillin can no longer be recommended for treating community-acquired S. aureus infections.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a Feynmannian path integral for the free diffusion equation in an arbitrary Euclidean space using the method partly contained in the formulation of the Fresnelian integral.
Abstract: The well-known Fourier integral solution of the free diffusion equation in an arbitrary Euclidean space is reduced to Feynmannian integrals using the method partly contained in the formulation of the Fresnelian integral. By replacing the standard Hilbert space underlying the present mathematical formulation of the Feynman path integral by a new Hilbert space, the space of classical paths on the tangent bundle to the Euclidean space (and more general to an arbitrary Riemannian manifold) equipped with a natural inner product, we show that our Feynmannian integral is in better agreement with the qualitative features of the original Feynman path integral than the previous formulations of the integral.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply Nelson's stochastic quantization procedure to vector-meson fields and obtain a Gaussian vector field which coincides with the space components of the corresponding Euclidean vector field.
Abstract: The application of Nelson's stochastic quantization procedure to vector-meson field gives rise to a Gaussian vector field which coincides with the space components of the corresponding Euclidean vector field. However, some of the main features of Euclidean-Markov structures are absent in the stochastic vector-meson field.

TL;DR: The depressant effects of β‐adrenoceptor agonists and phosphodiesterase inhibitors on contractions of slow‐contracting mammalian skeletal muscles are associated with increased muscular cyclic AMP levels.
Abstract: The depressant effects of beta-adrenoceptor agonists and phosphodiesterase inhibitors on contractions of slow-contracting mammalian skeletal muscles are associated with increased muscular cyclic AMP levels A strong correlation was found to exist between the percentage depression of contraction and the percentage increase in cyclic AMP level, irrespective of the drug used and regardless of the mechanism of cyclic AMP production The results strongly support the mediatory role of cyclic AMP in the depressant effects of beta-adrenoceptor agonists and phosphodiesterase inhibitors on slow-contracting mammalian skeletal muscle contractions

TL;DR: In this paper, a cumulative study over a period of several years, examines the problems of heavy metal pollution in various environmental sinks, taking into consideration several underlying perspectives, including geographical location, increasing importance as an economic and industrial center, and the ever increasing automobile population.
Abstract: Noted as one of the fastest growing capital cities among the developing countries, Kuala Lumpur faces a tremendous threat of being greatly exposed to problems of heavy metal pollution in its air, water, soil, sediment and the limited vegetation. Three factors enhance the increasing deposition of heavy metals in Kuala Lumpur: its geographical location; its rising importance as an economic and industrial center; and the ever increasing automobile population. This paper, based on a cumulative study over a period of several years, examines the problems of heavy metal pollution in various environmental sinks, taking into consideration several underlying perspectives. The 2 aspects of the metal pollution emphasized are: (a) ground analysis relating to the air pollution in the city proper; and (b) metal speciation studies. The metals analyzed were from samples of soil, water, sediment, and biological materials taken at several chosen sites in the city, using atomic absorption spectrophotometer and neutron activation analysis. The metals are considered from their chemical behaviour view-point, and crosslines are made with other environmental parameters measured including biophysical indices.

TL;DR: In this article, the suitability of the Reflective judgment interview technique in measuring the intellectual development of students was evaluated by using a semi-structured interview format consisting of four dilemmas involving controversial issues.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to test the suitability of the Reflective Judgment technique in measuring the intellectual development of students. Reflective Judgment Interview is a semi structured interview format consisting of four dilemmas involving controversial issues. This study was conducted on 56 students of the National University of Malaysia consisting of 26 students from the lower level of education and 30 students from the higher level of education. Analyses of data show that higher level students significantly obtained higher mean scores (4.78) as compared to lower level students (4.15). This result supports the assumption on the Reflective Judgment model, jointly developed by Kitchener and King. In spite of the fact that there was an overlapping in the distribution of mean scores, the students from the higher level of education obtained scores that were more clustered in the relativism and probabalism stage. This study also shows that academic major, sex, and place of birth do not have any significant influence on the student’s intellectual development.

TL;DR: The effects of 4‐methyl‐2‐thiouracil (MTU, 0.1% in drinking water) on the composition and cross‐sectional area of muscle fibres of the rat soleus muscle were studied.
Abstract: SUMMARY 1. The effects of 4-methyl-2-thiouracil (MTU, 0.1% in drinking water) on the composition and cross-sectional area of muscle fibres of the rat soleus muscle were studied. 2. The percentage of fast twitch-oxidative-glycolytic (FOG) fibres fell after 2 weeks of treatment with MTU to zero at 8 weeks. In contrast the percentage of FOG fibres in untreated animals fell to 19.2±2.1% during this period. 3. The mean cross-sectional area of FOG and slow twitch-oxidative (SO) fibres were respectively 39.9% and 23.8% smaller than those of their respective controls 6 weeks after treatment. At 8 weeks the percentage reduction of SO fibre area was 26.8% of the control value. 4. This study indicates that MTU treatment causes atrophy and redistribution of fibre type in the soleus muscle.
