TL;DR: Ten chronic alcoholic patients ingesting at least 120 ml ethanol a day for 12 mo or more were examined, on ethanol withdrawal, for evidence of magnesium deficiency, and nine patients were found to have diminished skeletal-muscle magnesium values, their mean being significantly lower than that of normal controls.
Abstract: Ten chronic alcoholic patients ingesting at least 120 ml ethanol a day for 12 mo or more were examined, on ethanol withdrawal, for evidence of magnesium deficiency. Nine patients were found to have diminished skeletal-muscle magnesium values, their mean being significantly lower (p < 0.001) than that of normal controls. Retention of infused magnesium was well correlated with increment of magnesium values on repletion. All nine patients exhibited clinical features which might be attributed to magnesium deficiency, and which subsided during the course of magnesium therapy. None of the patients, however, had abnormal bone magnesium values, only two had low serum (total and ultrafiltrable), and one had a low erythrocyte, magnesium level.

TL;DR: In this paper, a Malayan family living in Singapore were found to have a fast hemoglobin component in addition to normal hemoglobin A. Structure studies now indicate that the variant, hemoglobin J Singapore, has changes at two adjoining positions in the α chain, aspartyl replaces asparaginyl at position α 78 (αEF7) and glycyl replaces alanyl at α-79 (α EF8).

TL;DR: The findings indicate that the implants act as space fillers and seem to yield some mechanical support to the labial and palatal plates of bone.
Abstract: A study was conducted to determine if root implants might delay, halt, or alter normal changes in the pattern of bone resorption following the extraction of teeth. The four projects involved two biologic and two nonbiologic types of implants. The morphologic changes recorded showed delayed or altered resorption patterns. The implants tested (except plaster of Paris) proved to be tolerated by the tissues. The findings indicate that the implants act as space fillers and seem to yield some mechanical support to the labial and palatal plates of bone. Future projects should include implants that would also contribute to the reconstruction of the tooth socket, the implants eventually being resorbed and the space filled by new bone.

TL;DR: The immune adherence haemagglutination test (IAHA) was demonstrated to be more sensitive than electro‐osmodiffusion (EOD) for the detection of Australia antigen (Au) in Singapore blood donors.
Abstract: Summary The immune adherence haemagglutination test (IAHA) was demonstrated to be more sensitive than electro-osmodiffusion (EOD) for the detection of Australia antigen (Au) in Singapore blood donors. IAHA titres of less than 1024 are rarely detected by EOD. Au frequency in each of the four ethnic groups showed a significant difference between the high frequency of Au found in Chinese (8.2%) in comparison to Au in Malays (4.7%), Indians (2.9%) and others (1.3%). The differential ethnic susceptibility to Au carriage is discussed.

TL;DR: Study of 2,901 clinically normal newborn infants showed the incidence of nevi of the nape and glabella and eyelids to be 266 per 1,000, whereas that of nuchal nevus alone was 234 per 1%, and these nevae were not in creased significantly among 75 "abnormal" newborn infants studied.
Abstract: Study of 2,901 clinically normal newborn infants showed the incidence of nevi of the nape and glabella and eyelids to be 266 per 1,000, whereas that of nuchal nevus alone was 234 per 1,000. Four familial patients were found, an incidence of 1.3 per 1,000. These nevae were not in creased significantly among 75 "abnormal" newborn infants studied.

TL;DR: The fine structure of Toxoplasma gondii during penetration of macrophages is described and a parasitophorous vacuole developed around later stages of the parasite.
Abstract: The fine structure of Toxoplasma gondii during penetration of macrophages is described. The anterior half of the extracellular parasite contains micronemes and elongate rhoptries with bulbous, alveolar posterior ends, a conoid, a nucleus, and mitochondria. The toxoplasma organism interrupted the host cell membrane with its anterior tip. During early penetration the anterior third of the parasite was constricted and surrounded by granular cell material. As the organism penetrated further a host membrane formed around it. A parasitophorous vacuole developed around later stages of the parasite.

TL;DR: The findings show that in Singapore (a tropical city), Ascaris hookworm and Strongyloides infection are endemic and these infections are not significantly more common in cases of asthma than in other tropical cities.
Abstract: Summary: Stools from 108 cases of bronchial asthma and 300 controls were examined for presence of Ascaris, hook-worm and Strongyloides infections. Ascaris and hookworm infections were slightly more common in the asthmatic group while Strongyloides infection was slightly more common in the control group; these differences were not significant (p > 0.05). Our findings show that in Singapore (a tropical city) Ascaris hookworm and Strongyloides infection are endemic and these infections are not significantly more common in cases of asthma. It is concluded that there is no correlation in the tropics between the presence of helminthic infections and bronchial asthma.

TL;DR: Unlike previous reports, two of 26 patients with focal nephritis showed deterioration of renal function on follow up, whilst C′3 levels were diminished in three patients.
Abstract: Eighty-two patients with recurrent haematuria were investigated and divided into five groups according to clinical and histological findings. In patients with no documented history of acute nephritis, approximately equal numbers had normal renal histology, focal nephritis, and diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis. Patients with diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis showed a female preponderance, had a higher incidence of frank haematuria, raised sedimentation rate, and raised antistreptolysin O titre. Unlike previous reports, two of 26 patients with focal nephritis showed deterioration of renal function on follow up, whilst C′3 levels were diminished in three patients. Hypertension was observed in 10 per cent of patients with optically normal renal histology or focal nephritis. The significance of these results are assessed in relation to those reported in the literature.

TL;DR: The Nauta-Gygax method (1954) revealed degenerative changes in the digital sensory end-organs as well as in the distal portion of the sensory nerve fibres in the oral and digital tissues of slow loris.
Abstract: Sensory nerve terminations in the oral and digital tissues of slow loris (Nycticebus coucang coucang) were studied after topical or systemic administration of TOCP. Histochemical studies revealed a reduction of AChE and complete absence of ChE in sensory nerve terminations. In electron microscopy the light cells of taste buds showed vacuolization, degenerating mitochondria, distended endoplasmic reticulum, vesicle formation and “cytosegregosomes” while dark cells also has unusual shaped dense core granular vesicles (1,200–2,500 A diameter). The axons were “ballooned” with fragmenting mitochondria, some agranular vesicles and disorientated neurotubules lying in a dispersed, lightly granular axoplasm. Moreover, the Nauta-Gygax method (1954) revealed degenerative changes in the digital sensory end-organs as well as in the distal portion of the sensory nerve fibres. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Abstract: The fusarium population in paddy soils of West Malaysia showed considerable variation in size but was generally small. In many soils fusaria were not recovered. Only 3 species ofFusarium, F. oxysporum, F. roseum andF. solani were found. Of these.F. roseum was the most widely distributed species and occurred in highest numbers per g soil, whileF. oxysporum was the most restrictive in distribution and occurred in lowest numbers per g soil.

TL;DR: Electron microscopic study on the toxic effects of Triorthocresyl phosphate on digital Pacinian corpuscles of slow loris showed extensive separation of the myelin lamellae in the proximal segment of the nerve fibre.
Abstract: Electron microscopic study on the toxic effects of Triorthocresyl phosphate on digital Pacinian corpuscles of slow loris showed extensive separation of the myelin lamellae in the proximal segment of the nerve fibre. Schwann cell cytoplasm covering the nerve fibre also showed swollen mitochondria with loss of cristae. Neurofilamentous change was observed only in the intermediate segment while mitochondrial changes were noticed in both intermediate and terminal segments of the nerve fibre. Some desmosome-like thickenings were also seen between the opposing membranes of the lamellae of the inner core and the axolemma. The significance of these findings is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the theoretical significance of experimental values of the temperature and pressure coefficients of electrode processes is discussed, focusing on the equilibrium surface excess volumes and entropies and the real and ideal activation parameters associated with charge transfer reactions.
Abstract: Whilst the theoretical description of electrode processes is mainly concerned with thermodynamic functions such as energy, enthalpy, entropy and volume, very few experimental determinations of these important quantities have been made. This paper describes the theoretical significance of experimental values of the temperature and pressure coefficients of electrode processes. Particular importance is attached to (1) the equilibrium surface excess volumes and entropies and (2) the real and ideal activation parameters associated with charge-transfer reactions.
