TL;DR: Following horseradish peroxidase injection into the cervical and lumbosacral cords of adult albino rats, labeled neurons were seen in the first cervical segment, brain stem, and cerebellar and diencephalic nuclei, and a new pathway, the faciospinal projection, originating in the medial portion of the rostral part of the facial nucleus was traced.
Abstract: Following horseradish peroxidase injection into the cervical and lumbosacral cords of adult albino rats, labeled neurons were seen in the first cervical segment, brain stem, and cerebellar and diencephalic nuclei. A new pathway, the faciospinal projection, originating in the medial portion of the rostral part of the facial nucleus, was traced. Another new pathway, the olivospinal pathway, is probably also present. Our results for neurons projecting to the spinal cord (spinal-projecting neurons) from the nucleus ambiuus, dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, superior vestibular nucleus and nucleus f, nucleus Darshevch, nucleus Rolleri, nucleus prepositus hypoglossi, and nucleus of the posterior commissure have been reported before in other mammals but not in rats. Projections from the following regions are in general agreement with previous results in rats, but show significant topographical differences: the first cervical segment; nuclei gracilis, cuneatus, and cuneatus lateralis; the midline and lateral reticular nuclear complex; the trigeminal nuclear complex (spinal, principal, and mesencephalic); nucleus of the tractus solitarius; the medial, lateral, and descending vestibular nuclei, nuclei coeruleus and subcoeruleus; superior colliculus; interstitial nucleus of Cajal, and the deep cerebellar nuclei. The distribution of labeled neurons in the nucleus parabrachialis, nucleus tegmentolaterodorsalis, nucleus Kolliker-Fuse, nucleus Edinger-Westphal, and the hypothalamic nuclear complex confirmed that of previous reports in rats. With the exception of a few nuclear groups which project primarily to either lumbosacral (e.g., the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus) or cervical segments (e.g., the facial motor nucleus and the superior colliculus) most of the other nuclear groups project to both the lumbar and cervical levels. There is no distinct somatotopy in the neuronal groups projecting to both cervical and lumbosacral levels. With only a few exceptions (e.g., the superior vestibular nucleus) most of the spinal-projecting neurons are bilaterally distributed, some with contralateral and others with ipsilateral predominance.

TL;DR: In this article, the degree of son preference in 7 Asian countries (Turkey Indonesia Philippines Thailand Korea Taiwan and Singapore) and the US was analyzed in terms of background factors of the parents sex roles followed by the parents and the parents perception of the value of sons and daughters.
Abstract: This study examined the degree of son preference in 7 Asian countries (Turkey Indonesia Philippines Thailand Korea Taiwan and Singapore) and the US. Gender preferences were analyzed in terms of background factors of the parents sex roles followed by the parents and the parents perception of the value of sons and daughters. Over 90% of men and women surveyed in these 8 countries expressed some degree of son preference. The strongest preference for sons was found in Korea and Taiwan followed by Turkey and Thailand. In most cases sons are favored more by husbands than by wives. The main reasons cited for wanting sons were continuity of the family name and financial/practical help. On the other hand daughters are wanted to offer household/childcare help or to provide companionship. The variable most strongly related to son preference was the sex composition of the children a couple already had. Son preference was higher among couples who had more sons than daughters and intermediate among those with an equal number of sons and daughters. In some countries respondents with higher education levels exhibited less gender preference; however in other countries this pattern was not found. These results suggest that the development of sex preferences for children are more a function of cultural traditions than of individual characteristics of parents. Attitudes about the relative importance of sons and daughters appeared to be relatively uniform within countries.

TL;DR: Counts of labeled cells in the lateral vestibular nucleus and nucleus of the posterior commissure showed that there is a steady rise in the number of labeled neurons as the animals increase in age.
Abstract: According to results from the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method of tracing neuronal connections, the spinal cords of neonatal and immature rats receive a large number of descending projections from the first cervical cord segment, various brain-stem nuclei, and deep cerebellar and diencephalic nuclei. All these projections are present at birth, though at this age some of them are not fully established. Thus, only a few cells in the trigeminospinal, solitariospinal, tectospinal, and cerebellospinal groups were labeled after HRP injection in the lumbosacral or cervical cord segments in neonatal animals. They were clearly labeled in older, immature animals. The labeled neurons in other descending pathways appeared to be equal in density in neonatal, immature, and adult rats. This visual impression was stregthened by the counts of neurons in the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, which showed no significant difference in the number of labeled neurons in the three age groups. However, counts of labeled cells in the lateral vestibular nucleus and nucleus of the posterior commissure showed that there is a steady rise in the number of labeled neurons as the animals increase in age.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the area with the highest rate of adoption of new technology in the Philippines using the stochastic production frontier, farm-specific technical efficiency is empirically estimated for individual sample observations.
Abstract: Agricultural policies in developing countries are mostly concerned with the means of increasing production levels, especially of food grains The green revolution or new technology has been recognised by decision makers as an important tool in this context Consequently, the primary objective of any agricultural policy is to achieve high rates of adoption of new technology by farmers The fact that the success of new technology depends on the efficient use of the technology receives less attention from the decision makers How crucial this issue of the efficient use of technology is to increasing production levels is examined in this article The empirical focus is the area with the highest rate of adoption of new technology in the Philippines Using the stochastic production frontier, farm‐specific technical efficiency is empirically estimated for individual sample observations The results show a wide variation in the level of technical efficiencies among the sample farmers; and an extension service has been identified as an important factor causing such variations

TL;DR: The nature of the associated ligament injury and that of the posterior cruciate determine the type of treatment; the posterior Cruciate ligament is not more important than other knee ligaments.
Abstract: We have studied 48 patients with posterior cruciate ligament injury and 14 knees from fresh frozen cadavers. A diagnosis of posterior cruciate ligament injury was made by the sag and posterior drawer signs and stress x-ray films, the latter being useful in the grossly swollen and multiple ligament-injured knee. For avulsion injury, surgical management gave the best results. Other isolated posterior cruciate ligament injuries did well conservatively. When posterior cruciate injury is part of a multiple ligament injury, the nature of the associated ligament injury and that of the posterior cruciate determine the type of treatment; the posterior cruciate ligament is not more important than other knee ligaments.

TL;DR: Patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis may be equated to patients with extensive partial-thickness burns and should be treated in a burn unit, and a single drug can cause two "reaction" patterns.
Abstract: Fifteen patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) were studied. In all of them the TEN was related to drug ingestion and believed to be drug-induced. The drugs implicated include pyrazolone derivatives, allopurinol, barbiturates, tetracycline, phenytoin, and penicillamine. Possible etiologic co-factors are infections, cancer, and the systemic lupus erythematosus diathesis. The extent of skin loss varied from 25% to almost 100% involvement of the total body surface. Seven of the fifteen patients had more than 75% epidermal loss. Three deaths were recorded (20%). From observations on these fifteen patients it was found that a single drug can cause two "reaction" patterns, namely, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (or erythema multiforme) and TEN, at the same time or at different times in one and the same patient. It is stressed that from the prognostic and therapeutic viewpoints patients with TEN may be equated to patients with extensive partial-thickness burns and should be treated in a burn unit. Abstract: SYNOPSIS In this paper, equations have been developed to estimate diffuse fraction of the hourly, daily and monthly global insolation on a horizontal surface. These correlations are expressed in terms of Kd, the ratio of diffuse-to-total radiation, and KT, the clearness index. The hourly correlation equations, show a fairly similar trend to that of Orgill and Hollands (1) and Spencer (5) and support, their views on latitude dependence. The correlation equation for daily diffuse fraction of the global insolation agrees well with LIU and Jordan (6) and the latitude dependence is not very clear in this case. An equation has also been developed for monthly diffuse fraction of the global radiation. These correlation equations have been developed with limited data and apply to Singapore meteorological conditions.

TL;DR: A comparison of the waiting and no waiting cases yields a surprising result: the throughput for the no waiting case is often better than for the waiting case, and never much worse.
Abstract: An earlier paper introduced a simple performance model for studying the behaviour of locking. That paper treats a highly simplified form of locking, called the no waiting case, in which transactions restart when they request locks that are already held by others. This analysis is now extended to the more realistic waiting case, in which transactions are allowed to wait for conflicting locks, and restart only if there is a deadlock. The analysis begins with a system that has uniform access and exclusive locks only. The model's predictions for this base system agree well with simulation results. Next, a system with nonuniform access and another with shareable locks are each shown to be reducible to the base system. A comparison of the waiting and no waiting cases yields a surprising result: the throughput for the no waiting case is often better than for the waiting case, and never much worse.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the efficiency of Hong Kong's stock market is presented, which is based upon two widely accepted statistical tests, namely, serial correlation analysis and runs tests.
Abstract: The primary function of a stock market is to allocate resources to the most profitable investment opportunities. If stock prices provide accurate signals for resource allocation, firms are able to make correct production–investment decisions, and investors are able to choose the most suitable stocks for investment. These choices are only possible if the market is efficient, that is, if stock prices ‘fully reflect’ all available information. Hong Kong is now an international financial centre. Although Hong Kong's stock market is ranked as one of the five largest in the world in terms of turnover, little research has been devoted to the behaviour of its stock prices. This is a study of the efficiency of Hong Kong's stock market. It is based upon two widely accepted statistical tests, namely, serial correlation analysis and runs tests. Data used cover the daily prices of 28 major Hong Kong stocks over a period of four years from 1977 to 1980. The evidence is mixed; it does not provide clear support for the e...

Abstract: The steady-state solution for two parallel under ground tunnels of circular cross-section subjected to incident plane harmonic SH-waves is obtained in closed form, by using the method of wave function expansion. The image technique is employed to account for the reflection of waves at the ground surface. Numerical studies are carried out to determine the influence of spacing between the tunnels on the shear stresses in concrete and steel linings.

TL;DR: Five schemes are examined on two source images with different statistics to compare the effectiveness of the schemes to achieve the best subjective quality with the fewest coefficients transmitted and requiring the least overhead information.
Abstract: Transform coding has the ability to rapidly display a picture of low resolution by inverse transformation of a few of the low sequency coefficients only. Picture resolution is then progressively built up as more coefficients are received and decoded. In this paper, different sequences of transmitting the coefficients are investigated to find one which achieves the best subjective quality with the fewest coefficients transmitted and requiring the least overhead information. Five schemes are examined on two source images with different statistics to compare the effectiveness of the schemes to achieve the above objectives on each of the images.
