TL;DR: The authors examines an organizational crisis (a shooting and standoff in a business school) and presents a model for how resilience becomes activated in such situations, and three social mechanisms describe resilience activation.
Abstract: When external events disrupt the normal flow of organizational and relational routines and practices, an organization’s latent capacity to rebound activates to enable positive adaptation and bounce back. This article examines an unexpected organizational crisis (a shooting and standoff in a business school) and presents a model for how resilience becomes activated in such situations. Three social mechanisms describe resilience activation. Liminal suspension describes how crisis temporarily undoes and alters formal relational structures and opens a temporal space for organization members to form and renew relationships. Compassionate witnessing describes how organization members’ interpersonal connections and opportunities for engagement respond to individuals’ needs. And relational redundancy describes how organization members’ social capital and connections across organizational and functional boundaries activate relational networks that enable resilience. Narrative accounts from the incident support the...

TL;DR: This article examined the relationship between political ideology and perceptions of the threat of COVID-19 and found that due to Republican leadership's initial downplaying of the potential threat, the resulting public distrust of the proposed legislation increased.
Abstract: The present research examined the relationship between political ideology and perceptions of the threat of COVID-19. Due to Republican leadership’s initial downplaying of COVID-19 and the resulting...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the effect of tropical cyclone structure on the vortex motion in a nondivergent, barotropic numerical model with no basic current, and the dynamics of this beta-drift was studied via a decomposition into symmetric and asymmetric circulations.
Abstract: Some effect of tropical cyclone structure on the vortex motion are examined in a nondivergent, barotropic numerical model with no basic current. As suggested earlier by DeMaria, the initial maximum wind speed has little effect on the track. Vortex translation associated with the beta effect depends sensitively on the strength of the flow between 300 and 1000 km from the center. If the flow in this annulus is made more cyclonic, the track will turn cyclonically and move more toward the west in the Northern Hemisphere. The dynamics of this beta-drift is studied via a decomposition into symmetric and asymmetric circulations. The symmetric flow experiences a slight weakening of the maximum wind speed and an anticyclonic circulation is induced beyond 600 km. The asymmetric circulation is dominated by an azimuthal wavenumber one circulation with an anticyclonic gyre east of the center, a cyclonic gyre to the west and a nearly uniform, broad-scale ventilation flow between the gyres. The vortex translati...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used mediation analysis and structural equation modeling to test the relationship between trust and communication and found that quality of information predicted trust of coworkers and supervisors, while adequacy of information was associated with trust of top management.
Abstract: Communication plays an important role in the development of trust within an organization. While a number of researchers have studied the relationship of trust and communication, little is known about the specific linkages among quality of information, quantity of information, openness, trust, and outcomes such as employee involvement. This study tests these relationships using communication audit data from 218 employees in the oil industry. Using mediation analysis and structural equation modeling, we found that quality of information predicted trust of one's coworkers and supervisors while adequacy of information predicted one's trust of top management. Trust of coworkers, supervisors, and top management influenced perceptions of organizational openness, which in turn influenced employees' ratings of their own level of involvement in the organization's goals. This study suggests that the relationship between communication and trust is complex, and that simple strategies focusing on either quality or quan...

TL;DR: In this paper, observations are available to show that, early in the hurricane season, there are varying initial conditions in the Gulf of Mexico which could lead to significantly different total heat exchanges.
Abstract: It has been demonstrated that a large input of energy from the ocean is necessary to establish and maintain hurricane force winds over the sea. However, there has been no suitable data which could serve as a basis for calculating this input. Now, observations are available to show that, early in the hurricane season, there are varying initial conditions in the Gulf of Mexico which could lead to significantly different total heat exchanges. The sea can provide some seven days of energy flow into a hurricane at some times and at some locations, but less than one day in others depending upon the amount of heat initially available in the Gulf waters. In the four summers represented by the data, a quantity defined as hurricane heat potential was found to vary from a low of 700 cal cm−2 column north of Yucatan to a high of 31,600 in the central east Gulf. Synoptic data on hurricane heat potential, if made regularly available to forecasters, might serve as a basis for improved forecasts of changes in In...
