Abstract: Purpose –This study used a relatively large, carefully designed sample to provide a more detailed examination of the way conflict styles vary by organization level and gender. Design/methodology/approach – We drew a stratified, random sample from a national data base on the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, selecting 200 fully-employed men and 200 fully-employed women at each of 6 organizational levels—from entry-level positions to top executives. This design allowed us to test for linear and curvilinear relationships between style and organization level, as well as to compare gender differences in styles across organization levels. Findings – Results showed moderate effect sizes for both organization level and gender, with negligible interaction effects. Abstract: The circulation and dynamics of the Modified Atlantic Water have been studied using data from an intensive field experiment carried out between 22 September and 7 October 1992. Data included 134 CTD casts, ADCP, and satellite imagery. A well-defined wavelike front was observed with two significant anticyclonic gyres in the western and eastern Alboran Sea. Smaller-scale cyclonic eddies were also observed. The front separates the more saline, older modified Atlantic water (S>38) in the northern region from the fresher, more recent modified Atlantic water (S<36.8) in the south. The associated baroclinic jet had a mean transport of 1 Sv and maximum geostrophic velocities of 1.0 ms−1. The three-dimensional structure and spatial scales of both gyres were similar, that is, 90 km long and 220 m deep. In the eastern Alboran, northeast of Oran, the origin of the Algerian Current was also detected with an eastward transport of 1.8 Sv. Abstract: There has been roughly 15 years of research into approaches for aligning research in Human Computer Interaction with computer Security, more colloquially known as ``usable security.'' Although usability and security were once thought to be inherently antagonistic, today there is wide consensus that systems that are not usable will inevitably suffer security failures when they are deployed into the real world. Only by simultaneously addressing both usability and security concerns will we be able to build systems that are truly secure. This book presents the historical context of the work to date on usable security and privacy, creates a taxonomy for organizing that work, outlines current research objectives, presents lessons learned, and makes suggestions for future research. Abstract: Sympathetic nucleation is defined as the nucleation of a precipitate crystal at an interphase boundary of a crystal of the same phase when these crystals differ in composition from their matrix phase throughout the transformation process. Following a brief history of the discovery and interpretation of this phenomenon, the means of identifying the presence of sympathetic nucleation are described. The morphological configurations most frequently produced by sympathetic nucleation are illustrated. Heterogeneous nucleation theory is then applied to explain sympathetic nucleation. Particular emphasis is placed upon the driving force for sympathetic nucleation, since many of the effects of phase diagram geometry and supersaturation upon sympathetic nucleation can be simply explained upon this basis.
