TL;DR: A detailed overview of the regulatory status of TVWS in the United States and Europe is provided, the coexistence problem in TVWS is analyzed, and existing coexisting mechanisms to improve coexistence are summarized.
Abstract: TV white space refers to TV channels that are not used by any licensed services at a particular location and at a particular time. To exploit this unused TVWS spectrum for improved spectrum efficiency, regulatory agencies have begun developing regulations to permit its use this TVWS by unlicensed wireless devices as long as they do not interfere with any licensed services. In the future many heterogeneous, and independently operated, wireless networks may utilize the TVWS. Coexistence between these networks is essential in order to provide a high level of QoS to end users. Consequently, the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN standards committee has approved the P802.19.1 standardization project to specify radio-technology-independent methods for coexistence among dissimilar or independently operated wireless devices and networks. In this article we provide a detailed overview of the regulatory status of TVWS in the United States and Europe, analyze the coexistence problem in TVWS, and summarize existing coexisting mechanisms to improve coexistence in TVWS. The main focus of the article is the IEEE P802.19.1 standardization project, including its requirements and system design, and the major technical challenges ahead.

31 May 2004TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a system for relating a security association to a contact in a namespace familiar to the user, and using this association to make access control decisions, where a first device is received at a second device, and the second device locates a contact entry corresponding to the identifier in a contact directory.
Abstract: A system, apparatus and method for relating a security association to a contact in a namespace familiar to the user, and using this association to make access control decisions. An identifier of a first device is received at a second device. Using the identifier, the second device locates a contact entry corresponding to the identifier in a contact directory. A contact name associated with the identified contact entry is presented to the user of the second device to facilitate user authorization of the wireless proximity connection. An authorization identifier, e.g., a Bluetooth link key, is associated with the contact entry if authorized by the user of the second device. A wireless proximity connection, e.g., a Bluetooth connection, is established between the first and second devices in response to associating the authorization identifier with the entry. When subsequent wireless proximity connection are attempted between the first and second devices, the connection may be automatically established.

26 Mar 2002TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method and apparatus for phase hopping and space-time coding signals for transmission on multiple antennas, where phase hopping on the symbols within the N×N′ space time block code was used to allow transmission of the space time blocks code on a number of diversity antennas greater than N′.
Abstract: The present invention presents a method and apparatus for phase hopping and space-time coding signals for transmission on multiple antennas. The method and apparatus provides expansion of a N×N′ space time block code to a M×M′ space time block code, where M>N, by using phase hopping on the symbols within the N×N′ space time block code to allow transmission of the space time block code on a number of diversity antennas greater than N′. A result of M antenna diversity may be achieved for M transmit antennas.

20 Mar 2001TL;DR: In this article, a micromechanical switch and a resonator are realized in a single combined structure, which allows the manufacture of very compact filter and resonator structures needed for multi-system mobile communication means.
Abstract: The invention relates to resonator structures of radio communication apparatus. According to the invention, a micromechanical switch and a resonator are realized in a single combined structure. Combination of switch and resonator structures allows the manufacture of very compact filter and resonator structures needed for multi-system mobile communication means.

18 Mar 2005TL;DR: The requirements imposed by mobile audio services are discussed and a technology overview of AMR-WB+ as a codec matching these requirements while providing outstanding audio quality is given.
Abstract: Highly efficient low-rate audio coding methods are required for new compelling and commercially interesting applications of streaming, messaging and broadcasting services using audio media in 3rd generation mobile communication systems. After an audio codec selection phase, 3GPP has standardized the extended AMR-WB (AMR-WB+) codec that provides a unique performance at very low bit rates from below 10 kbps up to 24 kbps. This paper discusses the requirements imposed by mobile audio services and gives a technology overview of AMR-WB+ as a codec matching these requirements while providing outstanding audio quality.
