Abstract: In this paper, we perform physical motion recognition using mobile phones with built-in accelerometer sensors. Sensor data processing and smoothing techniques are discussed first to reduce the special noise present in phone-collected accelerometer data. We explore orientation-independent features extracted from vertical and horizonal components in acceleration as well as magnitudes of acceleration for six common physical activities, such as sitting, standing, walking, running, driving and bicycling. We find decision tree achieves the best performance among four commonly used static classifiers, while vertical and horizonal features have better recognition accuracy than magnitude features. Furthermore, a well-pruned decision tree with simple time domain features and less over-fitting on the training data can provide a usable model for inferencing a physical activity diary, refined by a similarity match from K-means clustering results and smoothed by an HMM-based Viterbi algorithm.

Abstract: Routing services on the web and on hand-held devices have become ubiquitous in the past couple of years. Websites like Bing or Google Maps allow users to find routes between arbitrary locations comfortably in no time. Likewise onboard navigation units belong to the off-the-shelf equipment of virtually any new car.The amount of volunteered spatial data of the OpenStreetMap project has increased rapidly in the past five years. In many areas, the data quality already matches that of commercial map data, if not outright surpass it.We demonstrate both a server and a hand-held device based implementation working with OpenStreetMap data. Both applications provide real-time and exact shortest path computation on continental sized networks with millions of street segments.We also demonstrate sophisticated real-time features like draggable routes and round-trip planning.

The system consists of an apparatus that includes a processor that is configured to capture an image of one or more objects and analyze data of the image to identify an object(s) of the image. The processor is further configured to receive information that is associated with at least one object of the images and display the information that is associated with the image. In this regard, the apparatus is able to simplify access to location based services and improve a user's experience. The processor of the apparatus is configured to combine results of robust visual searches with online information resources to enhance location based services.

Abstract: We review algorithms developed for nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) and nonnegative tensor factorization (NTF) from a unified view based on the block coordinate descent (BCD) framework. NMF and NTF are low-rank approximation methods for matrices and tensors in which the low-rank factors are constrained to have only nonnegative elements. The nonnegativity constraints have been shown to enable natural interpretations and allow better solutions in numerous applications including text analysis, computer vision, and bioinformatics. However, the computation of NMF and NTF remains challenging and expensive due the constraints. Numerous algorithmic approaches have been proposed to efficiently compute NMF and NTF. The BCD framework in constrained non-linear optimization readily explains the theoretical convergence properties of several efficient NMF and NTF algorithms, which are consistent with experimental observations reported in literature. In addition, we discuss algorithms that do not fit in the BCD framework contrasting them from those based on the BCD framework. With insights acquired from the unified perspective, we also propose efficient algorithms for updating NMF when there is a small change in the reduced dimension or in the data. The effectiveness of the proposed updating algorithms are validated experimentally with synthetic and real-world data sets.
