TL;DR: Channel equalization in filter bank based multicarrier (FBMC) modulation is addressed and a novel structure, consisting of a linear-phase FIR amplitude equalizer and an allpass filter as phase equalizer is found to provide enhanced robustness to timing estimation errors.
Abstract: Channel equalization in filter bank based multicarrier (FBMC) modulation is addressed. We utilize an efficient oversampled filter bank concept with 2x-oversampled subcarrier signals that can be equalized independently of each other. Due to Nyquist pulse shaping, consecutive symbol waveforms overlap in time, which calls for special means for equalization. Two alternative linear low-complexity subcarrier equalizer structures are developed together with straightforward channel estimation-based methods to calculate the equalizer coefficients using pointwise equalization within each subband (in a frequency-sampled manner). A novel structure, consisting of a linear-phase FIR amplitude equalizer and an allpass filter as phase equalizer, is found to provide enhanced robustness to timing estimation errors. This allows the receiver to be operated without time synchronization before the filter bank. The coded error-rate performance of FBMC with the studied equalization scheme is compared to a cyclic prefix OFDM reference in wireless mobile channel conditions, taking into account issues like spectral regrowth with practical nonlinear transmitters and sensitivity to frequency offsets. It is further emphasized that FBMC provides flexible means for high-quality frequency selective filtering in the receiver to suppress strong interfering spectral components within or close to the used frequency band.

21 Jun 2004TL;DR: In this paper, a system, apparatus and method for supporting multiple reader-tag configurations and reader-tags distances using a single multi-mode tag is presented, which includes operational tag circuitry (308, 332) configured to provide information in response to being activated by a reader device(s).
Abstract: A system, apparatus and method for supporting multiple reader-tag configurations and reader-tag distances using a single multi-mode tag. A multi-mode radio frequency (RF) transponder (300) is provided, which includes operational tag circuitry (308, 332) configured to provide information in response to being activated by a reader device(s) (118). Multiple antenna circuits (306, 330) are coupled to the operational tag circuitry (308, 332), where each of the antenna circuits (306, 330) is configured to operate at a different reader-tag distance. At least one disabling circuit (310, 344) is coupled to the operational tag circuitry (308, 332) and to at least one of the antenna circuits (306, 330), where the disabling circuit (310, 344) is configured to disable operation of at least one of the antenna circuits (306, 330) to which it is coupled.

TL;DR: The main objective of METIS is to lay the foundation for this future global mobile and wireless communications system, and to generate a global consensus here.
Abstract: In 2020, mobile and wireless traffic volume is expected to increase thousand-fold over 2010 figures. Moreover, an increase in the number of wirelessly-connected devices to counts in the tens of billions will have a profound impact on society. Massive machine communication, forming the basis for the Internet of Things, will make our everyday life more efficient, comfortable and safer, through a wide range of applications including traffic safety and medical services. The variety of applications and data traffic types will be significantly larger than today, and will result in more diverse requirements on services, devices and networks. METIS is set up by leading global players to prepare the migration towards tomorrow's multi-purpose global communication infrastructure, serving humans and things. The main objective of METIS is to lay the foundation for this future global mobile and wireless communications system, and to generate a global consensus here. In particular, METIS will provide new solutions which fit the needs beyond 2020.
