TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the properties of GaN that make it an attractive alternative to established silicon and emerging SiC power devices and present challenges and innovative solutions to creating enhancement-mode power switches.
Abstract: Recent success with the fabrication of high-performance GaN-on-Si high-voltage HFETs has made this technology a contender for power electronic applications. This paper discusses the properties of GaN that make it an attractive alternative to established silicon and emerging SiC power devices. Progress in development of vertical power devices from bulk GaN is reviewed followed by analysis of the prospects for GaN-on-Si HFET structures. Challenges and innovative solutions to creating enhancement-mode power switches are reviewed.

TL;DR: It is found that refactoring tools are seldom used: 11 percent by Eclipse developers and 9 percent by Mylyn developers, and cast doubt on several previously stated assumptions about how programmers refactor, while validating others.
Abstract: Refactoring is widely practiced by developers, and considerable research and development effort has been invested in refactoring tools. However, little has been reported about the adoption of refactoring tools, and many assumptions about refactoring practice have little empirical support. In this paper, we examine refactoring tool usage and evaluate some of the assumptions made by other researchers. To measure tool usage, we randomly sampled code changes from four Eclipse and eight Mylyn developers and ascertained, for each refactoring, if it was performed manually or with tool support. We found that refactoring tools are seldom used: 11 percent by Eclipse developers and 9 percent by Mylyn developers. To understand refactoring practice at large, we drew from a variety of data sets spanning more than 39,000 developers, 240,000 tool-assisted refactorings, 2,500 developer hours, and 12,000 version control commits. Using these data, we cast doubt on several previously stated assumptions about how programmers refactor, while validating others. Finally, we interviewed the Eclipse and Mylyn developers to help us understand why they did not use refactoring tools and to gather ideas for future research.

TL;DR: The results suggest that the ecological function of the vernalization requirement conferred by FRI differs across latitudes, and indicate that by combining ecological and molecular genetic data, it is possible to understand the forces acting on life history transitions at the level of specific loci.
Abstract: A latitudinal cline in flowering time in accessions of Arabidopsis thaliana has been widely predicted because the environmental cues that promote flowering vary systematically with latitude, but evidence for such clines has been lacking. Here, we report evidence of a significant latitudinal cline in flowering time among 70 Northern European and Mediterranean ecotypes when grown under ecologically realistic conditions in a common garden environment. The detected cline, however, is found only in ecotypes with alleles of the flowering time gene FRIGIDA (FRI) that lack major deletions that would disrupt protein function, whereas there is no relationship between flowering time and latitude of origin among accessions with FRI alleles containing such deletions. Analysis of climatological data suggests that late flowering in accessions with putatively functional FRI was associated with reduced January precipitation at the site of origin, consistent with previous reports of a positive genetic correlation between water use efficiency and flowering time in Arabidopsis, and the pleiotropic effects of FRI of increasing water use efficiency. In accessions collected from Southern latitudes, we detected that putatively functional FRI alleles were associated with accelerated flowering relative to accessions with nonfunctional FRI under the winter conditions of our experiment. These results suggest that the ecological function of the vernalization requirement conferred by FRI differs across latitudes. More generally, our results indicate that by combining ecological and molecular genetic data, it is possible to understand the forces acting on life history transitions at the level of specific loci.

TL;DR: Comparison of the calculated results with known databases on spruce MWL structure shows that the suggested approach is rather informative and comparable with the information obtained from the combination of various wet chemistry methods.
Abstract: A detailed approach for the quantification of different lignin structures in milled wood lignin (MWL) has been suggested using a combination of NMR techniques. 1H−13C heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence and quantitative 13C NMR of nonacetylated and acetylated spruce MWL have been found to have a synergetic effect, resulting in significant progress in the characterization of lignin moieties by NMR. About 80% of side chain moieties, such as different β-O-4, dibenzodioxocin, phenylcoumaran, pinoresinol, and others, have been identified on the structural level. The presence of appreciable amounts of α-O-alkyl and γ-O-alkyl ethers has been suggested. Although the quantification of various condensed moieties was less precise than for side chain structures, reliable information can be obtained. Comparison of the calculated results with known databases on spruce MWL structure shows that the suggested approach is rather informative and comparable with the information obtained from the combination of various w...
