Abstract: This review summarizes clinical studies in which glutathione was measured in tumor tissue from patients with brain, breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological, head and neck and lung cancer. Glutathione tends to be elevated in breast, ovarian, head and neck, and lung cancer and lower in brain and liver tumors compared to disease-free tissue. Cervical, colorectal, gastric, and esophageal cancers show both higher and lower levels of tumor glutathione. Some studies show an inverse relationship between patient survival and tumor glutathione. Based on this survey, we recommend approaches that may improve the clinical value of glutathione as a biomarker.

Abstract: The Ribonuclease P Sequence database is a compilation of RNase P sequences, sequence alignments, secondary structures, three-dimensional models, and accessory information. In its initial form, the database contains information on RNase P RNA in bacteria and archaea, and RNase P protein in bacteria. The sequences themselves are presented phylogenetically ordered and aligned. The database also contains secondary structures of bacterial and archaeal RNAs, including specially annotated 'reference' secondary structures of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis RNase P RNAs, a minimum phylogenetic consensus structure, and coordinates for models of three-dimensional structure.

Abstract: We present the development and characterization of a dedicated resonant soft x-ray scattering facility. Capable of operation over a wide energy range, the beamline and endstation are primarily used for scattering from soft matter systems around the carbon K-edge (∼285 eV). We describe the specialized design of the instrument and characteristics of the beamline. Operational characteristics of immediate interest to users such as polarization control, degree of higher harmonic spectral contamination, and detector noise are delineated. Of special interest is the development of a higher harmonic rejection system that improves the spectral purity of the x-ray beam. Special software and a user-friendly interface have been implemented to allow real-time data processing and preliminary data analysis simultaneous with data acquisition.

Abstract: This review paper summarizes recent advances in the quickly developing field of nanoscale ferroelectrics, analyses its current status and considers potential future developments. The paper presents a brief survey of the fabrication methods of ferroelectric nanostructures and investigation of the size effects by means of scanning probe microscopy. One of the focuses of the review will be the study of kinetics of nanoscale ferroelectric switching in inhomogeneous electrical and elastic fields. Another emphasis will be made on tailoring the electrical and mechanical properties of ferroelectrics with a viewpoint of fabrication of nanoscale domain structures.
