TL;DR: In view of the important implications of the subject, it is surprising that there have been so few studies of psychiatric illness within the medical profession, except specifically in regard to drug addiction.
Abstract: This paper reports the findings of a study of 192 medically qualified patients seen during the ten-year period 1 January 1954 to 1 January 1964. Of these, 78 were seen as out-patients and 114 were admitted for in-patient treatment. They were reviewed in terms of personal information, psychiatric history, outcome, and the patient's attitudes to his illness and its relation to his profession. The main findings of this study were: 1. Psychiatrists were over-represented in the out-patient group. 2. There was a significantly lower incidence of psychoneurosis in the total sample than in the total non-medical control sample. 3. There was a significantly higher incidence of drug addiction. 32.8 per cent. of the patients in this sample were addicted to alcohol or other drugs. The late onset of addiction was a notable feature in many of those addicted to drugs. 4. There was no significant difference between the incidence of schizophrenia, affective psychoses, or the other diagnostic categories in our sample and in the non-medical control group. 5. 78 per cent. of these patients broke down within twenty years of qualification, and approximately 40 per cent. within the first ten years. Reasons for these findings are discussed. Also discussed are the stress factors, the high incidence of suicide in the profession, the difficulties of treatment, and the question of competence to practise. Recommendations are made regarding improved selection and training of doctors, and the treatment and management of the psychiatrically ill doctor.

TL;DR: The adjustable parameters in a MacAdam-modified version of Friele’s 1965 proposal for calculating color differences have been optimized, according to a criterion of MacAdam, to fit PGN experimental data.
Abstract: The adjustable parameters in a MacAdam-modified version of Friele’s 1965 proposal for calculating color differences have been optimized, according to a criterion of MacAdam, to fit PGN experimental data. The mean-square error of fitting is 0.030. The distribution of the resulting color-metric coefficients more closely approximates those of the PGN data than do previous versions of Friele’s proposals. The optimized primaries have chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.74054, y = 0.25946 for the red; x = −1.11696, y = 2.11696 for the green; and x = 0.13939, y = −0.03454 for the blue primary.

TL;DR: The return of Pco 2 to normal values in the postoperative period was found to be rapid and, for practical purposes, complete in 30 minutes.
Abstract: In thirteen patients capillary blood samples were obtained for measurement of pH and Pco2 immediately after the induction dose of thiopentone, after 45 minutes of 2 per cent halothane breathed spontaneously (with nitrous oxide and oxygen), and 30 minutes postoperatively. A very variable rise in Pco 2 was observed which did not correlate well with changes in pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory frequency, respiratory minute volume, or with the age of the patient. A single measurement of respiratory minute volume with a Wright respirometer was of no value in indicating which patients had the greatest carbon dioxide retention. The return of Pco 2 to normal values in the postoperative period was found to be rapid and, for practical purposes, complete in 30 minutes.

TL;DR: In one of three clinical teams serving mixed urban and rural areas this emphasis was shifted to personal psychiatry by encouraging patients to talk about their life situation and by encouraging hospital psychiatrists, general practitioners, and allied services to share in the evaluation of individual cases.

TL;DR: Nomograms which enable the concentration of halothane or trichloroethylene delivered from a Halox vaporizer to be read directly are presented and the mathematical derivation of the nomogram is shown in the appendix.
Abstract: SUMMARY Nomograms which enable the concentration of halothane or trichloroethylene delivered from a Halox vaporizer to be read directly are presented. The mathematical derivation of the nomogram is shown in the appendix. Similar nomograms can be constructed for any volatile agent whose vapour pressure does not vary greatly over the range of liquid temperature in clinical practice and which is not used in vapour concentrations above about 7 per cent. There are slight inaccuracies in the case of halothane when the concentration is above 5 per cent and at the same time the temperature of the liquid is unusually low or high. These are discussed and are unlikely to be clinically significant. These nomograms might prove useful in practice since the need for mental calculation is avoided.
